Edge #256: Why PS4 is your next console (Shots fired, post-DRM 180)

I don't understand the negative reaction to this.

People moan when the specialist media delivers shameless, baseless hype and PR pieces, criticising the likes of Kotaku and Polygon for not punishing the mistakes or asking questions of policy decisions of the major platform holders and studio's.

Now a mainstream and widely respected print magazine does exactly that and it's suddenly a problem or they're fanboys?

Rock and a hard place. They cannot win.

The entire game industry is constantky between a rock and a hard place.

"Our extended Hype section takes in the biggest and most significant new games to emerge from this year’s E3, including Metal Gear Solid 5, The Division, Titanfall, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, Dark Souls II, Final Fantasy XV and many more."

Why is there no PS4 exclusive in that list then ?

People often criticise gaming journalism because it doesn't take a tough enough stance on the big issues, now Edge is being criticised because they are.

One can post an editorial condemning Microsoft's mistakes with the X1 without plastering a PS4 advertisement on the front page of your magazine.

Whoa, that is a very strong statement for a group like Edge to take.

That said, if you lay out all that we know about the PS4 and Xbox One, it's really hard to say the latter is the console gamers should get. The PS4 is $100, grants access to a library of games that is 97% similar to the X1, and it has better hardware. The conclusion you get when you boil this down to its core.

Ho, wow...This is a nuke on Microsoft camp.

Edge represents a nuke?

Great launch lineup means nothing to 95% of gamers who will not manage to buy console at launch anyway. Consistency of great game releases is way more important.

Since when were 95% of gamers opting in for a PS4? Source? Some of us are getting both platforms? Some exclusive.

THIS ^^ is from E3 2005 where SONY clearly did NOT have a good showing. It just shows how biased EDGE have been towards SONY. The article reads, 'SONY shows MS how to launch a console at E3'

- $599 console
- terrible dev support
- nightmare to program for
- 'we want ppl to work 2 jobs to afford it'
- RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACER

Great post, shame it'll get lost in the hyperbole.

We detail how Sony crushed Microsoft at E3 2013 and why PS4 is your next console in the new issue of Edge magazine.

Do we now the details of how Sony crushed MS? Because, apart from the DRM thing, that now isn't worth much since the 180 turn MS took, and the price (which counts a lot, to be honest), I have to say that Microsoft had a better showing when it comes to games, in my opinion (also considering FFXV and KH3 are not PS4 exclusive).

Anyway, feels weird to have EDGE stating this on the cover. Kinda makes me want to disregard their opinion completely. And this is coming from someone who never had a Xbox product and is not even interested in buying a Xbox180.

Edge's new issue definitely reflects what the vast majority of people felt after E3, Microsoft screwed up majorly and all but handed Sony this generations console win. Even with a complete 180 reversal in change of policy with how they will do things MS basically dumped a lot of good will and trust they had built up all these years while Sony amazingly hit every high point without failure which was mind blowing considering how they tended to screw up so much before this as well.

If E3 was about games... X1 would have won easily, but apparently people went emo for stuff that has been all around us for years now. Sony just ass kissed all the hardcore geeks and people just bought it. Edge should know better.... what a joke of a cover TBH.

Another reason why tablets and phones will run the consoles into the ground this generation. It feels like the big bubble of the 80s.

This is what concerns you? That MS's sizable mistakes aren't being dealt with in a quiet and secretive manner lest Sony get some kind of advantage..., in a TWO HORSE RACE?!

Great post, shame it'll get lost in the hyperbole.

Shame it's been called out like half a dozen times to in fact be not a great post at all.

Just so it doesn't get lost in the hyperbole. :)

...that was a year later.

You are really bending history here. Sony had bad showing on E3 2006 when they announced price. In 2005 they showcased console architecture and awesome tech demos [and CGI]. :)

Please look back on your history. E3 '05 was before all this, when PS3 was a vision (literally) of next-gen wonder with a tonne of high profile franchise representation compared to the reality of Microsoft's box, warts-and-all. It was hugely smoke-and-mirrors, but at the time that wasn't so evident and it was a box full of promise, basically.

Everything you say is from E3 2006.

During E3 2005 we saw amazing bullshots, trailers, vastly better specs, etc. We didn't get price, Ridge Racer, etc until E3 2006.

A lot of people thought PlayStation 3 was the way forward in 2005.

You should have spent more time constructing your argument here, because that is a issue from 2005, coming after E3 2005, notice the boomerang controller? Notice "2005" in the top right corner?

They did not disclose the price, riiiiiiidgeeee raceeeeer or anything at that event.

You are being dishonest by taking a EDGE magazine issue and sending it forward in time after E3 2006 to support your argument that EDGE is biased. Look at the dates, look at what actually happened

If you want an idea of what the article probably contains:

http://www.edge-online.com/features/e3-2013-microsoft-press-conference-review/
http://www.edge-online.com/features/e3-2013-sony-press-conference-review/

Like a lot of outlets, and to be honest, anecdotally, most of what I read here on Gaf, Edge thought Sony had a better showing.

Whoa, that is a very strong statement for a group like Edge to take.

See above.

No, it's inaccurate. The cover was from E3 2005, his content was from E3 2006.

E3 2005 = look, bullshots, more powerful than 360.
E3 2006 = $599, RIIIDDGGEEE RACER.

This right here....,

Great post, shame it'll get lost in the hyperbole.

Is everything that is wrong with this thread. Don't let little things like FACTS get in the way of your point.

After all we have a console war to win on behalf of a multi national corporation that doesn't give a fuck about us.

Urgh.

Actually terrible post with most facts wrong but don't let that stop you.

I would encourage everyone to please ratchet it down a notch.

Actually terrible post with most facts wrong but don't let that stop you.

I also accepted the correction when it was made, just a few posts later. I thought the 2006 conference was the one in 2005.

The only fact wrong was the year. Everything else was correct regarding the conference I was referring to.

Why are you lying? This whole DRM crap hasn't been around on consoles ever. And you call it "ass kissing" when Sony said that they will not have this? And when they announce a console which is more powerful than the Xbox One for $100 less? So announcing a good product now is ass kissing? You are so biased, it's incredible.

Another reason why tablets and phones will run the consoles into the ground this generation. It feels like the big bubble of the 80s.

Because the Xbox One will not be as successful? The only thing that will happen is more people will buy a PS4.

If you believe this, go for it.

It is clearly a conspiracy!

Not helped by gamers not knowing what they want from games journalism, as evidenced by this thread.

Some people in this thread are commenting and have literally zero idea what they want from the specialist press. Absolutely none.

I say it's disgusting because I wouldn't buy a magazine to be told want to do with my money. The cover is not informative, it's telling you that you will need to buy a PS4 because it is the only right decision.
I would have expected the likes of "x number of reasons why ps4 is awesome" and that's it, but it's literally telling me that ps4 is the only option.

What kind of information is that? I will make my mind after I read the facts, you as a journalist don't have a word on what I like and what I don't like and of course you don't have a fucking clue about what will happen the next 7 years. What if ps4 fails as vita did? Maybe they can see the future, but I can't see how is appropriate of them to tell me to get a ps4 exclusively if I have to choose a console.

It's not appropriate of any kind of informative media to tell you what to do, they are there to inform (or at least they should), not to sell you on things.

Edit: and of course I'm only commenting on what I see on the cover, like everyone else in this thread. The article could be an amazing read, but I hate what I see on the cover.

Is the headline sensationalist? Undoubtedly. Do a lot of people's reactions here conform to my first sentence? I think so.

People only want tough stances when it's not their favourite corporation and/or game in the firing lines.

The PS4 is a huge reason why the mistakes are so glaring.

Again: you can pen an editorial on the X1's troubles without running an add on the PS4. Here's an example of an appropriate headline that isn't an outright advertisement for the PS4:

Code:
[B]Is the PS4 your next console?[/B]

--Why the PS4 might be the console for you.

It accomplishes the same thing without blatantly spinning one way or the other. It frames the article as something that might provide you with information to make an informed decision, while the title as it is now tells you outright to buy the PS4, and that it is the only decision.

It's an ad, and an utterly shameless one at that.

It wasn't much different in 2006, to be honest. Back when the "PlayStation 3 versus the world" issue came out in February 2006, the PS3 dream has already started crumbling, albeit the final $599 blow didn't happen until that year's E3. That still didn't stop them from endorsing PS3 for Christmas that year:

A few months later they had another very optimistic PS3 cover story, although the situation for PS3 didn't really start improving until months later, when the $399 40 GB model was launched.

Not to say that Edge was biased back then, but they were not this hard on PS3.

The cover you post is neither positive nor negative, it shows that that issue has info on the PS3 nothing more. The cover you link is more a testament to how exciting that game was at the time. and SHOCK HORROR "bad" consoles can have good games! XBO has forza and halo, which are by all accounts good games.

if there is a cover post e3 2006 that declares "PS3 is the only console to own" you have a point. until then, You come across as pulling at straws

HOLY SHITTIES! I used to buy Edge in the US but they became really expensive and I stopped. But I will spend money on this issue!

I highly doubt that a golden age can happen again, with today's market situation.
Lack of competition is always bad. People who hope for that have learned nothing, from previous generations.

I'm arguing for software competition over hardware competition. Dominant consoles reduce the costs and risks of making experimental games because the target market is less fractured and the costs of porting are removed.

Who does that? The title is everything journalism shouldn't be. It would be a bit more acceptable if it was one guy who said that but to make it endorse by an entire magazine is disturbing if not disgusting.

Another sad landmark for game journalism. Ever seen a paper saying "vote for him/her" ? Or, "this is the good guy" ? They could at least try to make it seem well thought out. Something like "why we prefered Sony's showing" or "why we think the PS4 is better" would be more reasonable, and smart. It won't make up for the opinion that Edge is a shitty magazine and Sony sell outs...

This one's reals though:

It does say "the $99 console of the future" not "the best console out there" or something. It's not as bad.

Easily? I doubt that, plenty of games were multiplatform and it's not like Sony hasn't showed 5 exclusives yet.
