Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

Don't forget to check out Ledsen's Oblivion modding thread too!

New and Improved (updated 18/01/2012)

Welcome to the new and improved mods thread for the 3D Fallout games. The original OPs focused a lot on how to actually install mods, but I'm going to keep that down to a bare minimum this time around since there's already a lot of tutorials online about how to get started.

N.B.: Most screenshots are taken from the original mod pages and were supplied by users of the mods, or the creator themselves. If you're either of those people and want the image(s) removed or attributed please send me a PM.

The Checklist

Before you start modding, run through this checklist:

  1. Have I backed up my game install?
  2. Have I installed Fallout Mod Manager?
  3. Have I installed Fallout/New Vegas Script Extender?
  4. Have I installed 7zip and WinRAR?
  5. Have I registered for an account on The Nexus Forums?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, it's time to start modding.

Project Beauty

Project Beauty replaces every single NPC face in the game with one which has avoided the ugly-stick.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6341

Fellout

Fellout brings green grass and blue skies back to the wasteland.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2672

NMC’s Texture Pack

Inspired by Qarl’s amazing work on Oblivion, this mod replaces every single texture in the vanilla wasteland with a photographic image-map 200 - 400% larger than the original.

Gameplay

DC Interiors Project

The DC Interiors Project adds a huge number of indoor locations to the game, some of which span multiple instanced areas and have mini-objectives.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5573

Mart’s Mutant Mod

This is the quintessential overhaul mod. The aim is to make the game a lot harder right from the start, and it delivers.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3211

Fallout: Wanderer’s Edition

Basically the greatest mod ever made for anything, Wanderer's Edition turns Fallout 3 into S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of the Capitol.

http://sites.google.com/site/fo3wanderersedition/

RH Ironsights

Ironsights in Fallout 3. And they actually work! Combine this with Wanderer's Edition for the real survival FPSRPG experience.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6938

RTS: Realtime Settler

A complete change of pace from most gameplay mods for Fallout 3 which aim to improve the action with better combat mechanics, the RTS mod brings Sim-City to the Capitol Wastes.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7070

Interface

Darnified UI

High-resolution fixes for the UI in Fallout 3. Also changes the default UI font to something I hate, so I don't use this.

http://modsreloaded.com/darnified-ui-f3

MTUI

Nothing but fixes for higher-resolution, I much prefer this to Darnified.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=43

aHud
Allows you to move almost any HUD element around to a new location, as well as remove the brackets around them.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15886

Crosshair (?)
I'm not going to recommend a particular crosshair as they're all pretty much interchangeable. If you want somewhere to start, I use a mod with the imaginative name 3 new Cool crosshairs:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7603

Miscellaneous

Maximised Window
This little mod will wait a few seconds after the game launches and then forcibly maximise the window.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=45

Games for Windows Live Disabler
Kill it with fire.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1086

Troubleshooting
Mods can mess with one another pretty seriously, and it can often be hard to work out which combination of mods is causing you to crash to desktop every few minutes. Thankfully a lot of the major conflicts have been identified and fixes for them have been rolled into Fallout Interoperability Project (FOIP) packages.

NMC's Texture Pack for New Vegas

Not complete yet, but a great start. Replaces all the textures in the game with photographic image maps which are 200 - 400% of their original size.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=43135

Nevada Skies

Clear skies and weather effects for the Mojave Wasteland.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35998

Wasteland Flora Overhaul

Adds new and improved plants to the Mojave. If you choose the "fertile" option it makes everything a lot more green and pretty.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39856

Enhanced Shaders

Basically an ENB implementation for New Vegas. The effect is quite subtle as it's only a beta at this stage, however it's definitely an improvement on the vanilla HSV levels.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34868

Gameplay

New Vegas Bounties: Episode 1 and 2

Still the king of New Vegas quest modifications. If you've never played this, what the hell is wrong with you?

Episode 1: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37310
Episode 2: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=41184

A World of Pain

AWOP adds 94 new locations to the Mojave. It completely breaks the main game from a balance perspective because it makes a lot of serious artillery easily obtainable very early on, so keep that in mind.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=38719

Project Nevada

The creators of Fallout: Wanderer's Edition are back with an equally ambitious mod for New Vegas. Project Nevada adds sprinting, cybernetic implants, various vision-modes provided by helmets such as thermal and infrared and much more.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40040

Weapon Mods Expanded
Expands the weapon mods system. Obviously.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39651

JSawyer
Josh Sawyer was the lead designer on New Vegas, and this mod is a collection of balance tweaks and such which he wasn't able to add to New Vegas. Examples include adding weight to stims, adjusting the karma gain associated with killing Fiends to make farming them for an alignment change substantially less viable and altering the modifier for base carry-weight to make the game more challenging.

http://www.falloutwiki.com/JSawyer

Interface

Mostly the same as Fallout 3, so here are the links:

Darnified for New Vegas http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1143482-wipzbeta-darnified-ui-nv/page__hl__darnified
MTUI for New Vegas http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34902
aHUD for New Vegas http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=40858

iHUD
This is a great mod for people who like to go HUD-less as it automatically fades out HUD elements unless they’re actually animating.

<3 Fallout 3! I wish Fallout New Vegas was as good. It just didn't hit that good spot like 3 did. I would love to seem some shots posted here that feature some awesome texture mods.

Can't we make this a thread for both Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

I don't really like mods that change the character models and textures since it messes with the game's original art design - unless it's a 10-year-old game or something. The only FO3 visual mod I installed was Fellout, and all that really did was remove the green filter and make the lighting more realistic. Great mod, but it makes night time in that game actually pitch black which caused me to always seek shelter before dark.

How is the New Vegas mod scene these days?

Slowly improving. Project Nevada is made by the Wanderer's Edition folks and that's fairly mature and stable. As far as graphics stuff though, improved shaders is really the best there is at the moment.

This is a shot of Megaton in a similar position as my one, but different time of day. You can see the difference in textures pretty easily:

How often does Fallot 3 GOTY edition go on sale for 9.99 on Steam?

Has it ever gotten that low?
I really want Fallout 3, but I want to pay 9.99. In order to get the most out of mods, I need all the DLC, leaving me needing the GOTY edition.

Combine it with Wanderer's Edition and you can buy some nightvision goggles. I'll agree that some of the faces in Project Beauty go a little too far, but it's clear that most of the FO3 modding community actually likes the Fallout universe enough that the stuff mostly just fits.

I actually paid full price for it just last year :\

The value proposition is nicer if you buy the Bethesda pack, but you still save a tonne of cash buying the GOTY compared with if you bought the individual DLC packs.

Check retail if you have to, I got the GOTY for 19.99$ and FNV has completely dropped to a 30$ price range vs 50$ on the steam store. At least in Toronto.

edit: also, just curious, there seems to be a FOSE mod that adds iron sights; is that any good compared to FNV's or is VATS still the superior option?

My favorite F3 mod was the weapons degradation mod. It allowed my weapons to degrade 99% slower than normal.

Can retail be registered on Steam, or would I still need to use the CD?

FO3 retail doesn't have Steamworks. You can launch it from steam (which is what I do) but you can't register it. I think you do need the DVD in the drive but
there are obviously ways around it which I won't mention
.

Very rarely. The GOTY edition was discounted during the holiday steam sale. At 50% off it went down to $25. If it goes on sale again, it will probably be as part of a Bethesda week, or just before Skyrm releases.

I haven't tried any iron sights mods myself, but this video of RH Ironsights looks pretty decent. Because I'm playing with the Wanderer's Edition I use bullet-time instead of VATS anyway but I might chuck that on now and see how it goes.

LOL just looked up said nude mods. amazing. can't believe people are still doing this. I could understand it back in nude raider times and so on. hehe. as pathetic as it was even back then, the devs on tomb raider were begging for people to jerk off to lara with all the suggestive rendered poses. and also porn downloaded a lot slower. heh. and not that many people even had access to the internet. but these days, come on :-DD

I've literally spent this weekend installing and modding up FO3 for the first time. This site seems like an awesome place to start when it comes to modding the game. I now have a folder with over 5GB of mods :/.

RH Ironsights is nice actually! I'm going to keep playing with it for now and see how I go.

I'm going to seem like a creep for knowing this but there is a mod which basically populates the Capitol Wasteland with lolis. For real.

Any new links for that piss filter removal on new vegas? The one in the essential mods link doesn't exist anymore on the nexus.

Also, out of all the mods I got in NV so far, my favorite is such a tiny mod...giving a perk every level instead of every 2. I love getting perks in these games, and Obsidian crushed me with that every 2 level thing.

Would love some more suggestions though.

I liked the seducing women adult mod, didnt have any nudity (back when I tried it at least) but was def adult only, which is fine since Fallout had sex in it before and I dont think Fallout 3 has... any besides implied stuff?

every 2 levels was still too many, give me Fallout 2s every 3rd level (or 4th with gifted trait).

Pretty sure that the piss-removal is courtesy of Nevada Skies but I could be wrong. My NV modding experience is pretty limited... maybe I should spend some time playing around and use the 2nd post for New Vegas stuff?

If we're going to do New Vegas ones here as well then I'm going to nominate this bounty mod. This is part II, which apparently just came out a couple days ago and it's a sequel to part 1 which is the #1 rated mod on the whole site. Part 1 was pretty awesome, all voiced (and pretty well done all things considered), has a nice little story, and is pretty rewarding in terms of caps and other items.

As discussed previously, the Fallout Mod Manager has a custom package format used for distributing mods. The trouble is that some people refuse to use FOMM and prefer to handle their mod files manually, so mod makers almost always distribute their mods as loose files and leave the packaging up to the end-user. As such I thought it might be useful to write a tutorial for rolling your own FOMod packages.

Why would I want to do this?
Convenience. It’s a small initial investment of time which makes your modding life so much easier that you earn that time back in spades. Amusingly enough, although I said in the OP that I’ve never hosed my Fallout 3 install with mods, I did exactly that the very same day I made the thread. Because I have all of my mods packaged up as FOMods however, all I needed to do was restore from a Steam backup and activate a bunch of packages. Then I hosed my install again. And again, I was back up and playing within 10 minutes.

Let’s Do it
First, open FOMM and click the package-manager button on the main window.

fomm-001.png

Select “Create FOMod” from the list/button and press it.

fomm-002.png

Unzip a downloaded mod file into a folder. Press the “Add Folder” button, locate the folder and add it to FOMM.

fomm-003.png

Once this is done, you will see the folder in the list on the left.

fomm-004.png

Expand the folder and find the folder where you start to see ESM and ESP files. If you don’t find one, the mod may not use ESMs or ESPs so look for folders called textures, meshes, sounds, menus, music or shaders. The contents of this folder over to the right.

fomm-005.png

If you want to make your life even easier, also fill in the info panel. Personally I find that specifying the version at the very least makes it much easier to keep your mods up to date.

fomm-006.png

Lastly, go to the “Save Locations” panel and check “Create FOMod”, then press “OK”. More often than not a little confirmation box will come up saying that you haven’t filled in all of the info for the mod but it’s safe to let it go ahead anyway.

fomm-007.png

And that’s it! Now the mod is packaged and compressed in a folder which you chose when you were installing FOMM. If you ever need to uninstall FO3 or NV it won’t cost you your mods.

Many thanks for this thread. I've actually been looking for a list of the must-have mods for a few months now after beating New Vegas. I enjoyed FO3 when it came out but got bored rather quickly so I never really experienced the full game, but after playing New Vegas and loving the setting and story, it convinced me that the gameplay in the FO series is good enough for me to take FO3 seriously now.

I guess I was just kind of indifferent when FO3 came out and didn't give it a chance, but the setting of New Vegas convinced me to keep going on until I learned to love the gameplay and the story elements to the series. It's weird in a way since I loved the setting in FO3 too, but I think just recently visiting Las Vegas in real life had me hyped to play New Vegas to experience it since Vegas was still fresh in my mind. Then adding some mods in New Vegas helped me realize just how crucial some of these mods can be to the game.

So these past few months after beating New Vegas, I've been sitting here seeing what could convince me to go back to FO3 and then this thread pops up the day after I did some major research on mods and this answered all of my questions.

So thanks again for helping me out a lot. I now have other reasons to give FO3 a shot again besides playing all of the DLC I missed. If you have any other ones that might not be major overhauls or crucial by any means but you like them personally, please shares some names and I can look them up myself. I know you mentioned using the Nexus top files list which is what I've done in the past, but what's your personal favorite that's not in this thread already or maybe even ones that you love that aren't in the top files?

You may want to add FOOK2 to your list (with the precision that it doesn't work with FWE)

While I run my Fallout 3 copy with FWE now my first heavily modded playthrough was with FOOK2 and I had a lot of fun.

They both are major overhauls but they are different enough to appeal to different people.

FOOK2 is like FO3 on steroids, while FWE is the closest to what FO3 should have been from scratch.

you may also want to talk about those mods in the graphic department :

EVE - Energy visual Enhanced
http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8340

great mod whith energy weapon visual / sound/ death animations overhaul

Fallout Street Lights
http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8069

and you should really tag the FO3 mods only from the NV ones or tag them as both with a link to both versions :p

Thanks for the info, I don't use FOOK myself so I didn't want to discuss it because anything I said would just be repeating stuff I've read online. By all means make a bigger post endorsing it though, that's what the thread is for!

I haven't tried FSE but I've found EVE has a few weird problems with weapon overhauls, which is why I left it out. Pretty sure I just need to install the FOIP bridge for it and FWE and it'll be fine though, I've just been too lazy.

Done and done. The posts are kind of separate but I've blended some of the general info and added nifty little icons next to the links to indicate which game they're for.

I think I'll give FOOK2 a try with some time, but I did enjoy the immersion that FWE added.

That said, I don't want to sound like a baby but GOD most of the changes in FWE make the game too hardcore for me. I had to dial down the damage multipliers a bit to make it more than "quicksave, walk 10 feet, see 8 raiders show up on raider, promptly die". I turned off fast travel which was neat for maybe the first couple times I gave it a try but most of the time it feels tedious.

I would give FWE another spin, but FO3 seems to crash everytime I try to leave Rivet City now, plus it's exam period now so I just gave up. Should I just turn everything off and try to leave, then reload my addons?

Also, the FO3 iron sights mod is brilliant, but coming back from FNV, I had this weird feeling that iron sights in FO3 doesn't work out so well. I took the RH_IS mod, tuned it so I have basically only have 5% sway, changed FWE to bias weapon skill into accuracy and reduced spread, weapon condition too. So I have 100 skill, a near pristine weapon, almost no weapon sway in iron sights and a perfectly lined up shot without VATS still will, 75% of the time, just fly off elsewhere.

Then again, coming back from FNV, all the things they implemented from FO3 mods just feels extremely inelegant, like crafting, the quick grenade feature and other stuff. I probably shouldn't complain but it sometimes feels really clunky at times.

If you save was very old I now do remember the feature being broken and turned off when the game first came out. That really sucks to lose a game that far in.

Good job remembering to add the New Vegas bounty mods. They're so damn well done I sometimes end up thinking I'm playing official DLC. I really liked the more open ended approach part 2 took instead of just running back and forth for each bounty.

One of the mods which I tried and loved after making the thread is Weapon Mod Kits for Fallout 3. It adds a set of generic mods which can be applied to nearly any weapon, which are:

- Scope
- Auto-fire mechanism
- Extended Magazine

And there's at least one more I've forgotten. It's really awesome, I was cruising around the wastes with a laser-SMG after I added auto-fire and a scope to a laser-pistol.

The best thing might be to just give a recommended starter-pack list, a few of the mods below aren't linked in the previous lists. The purpose of these 2 lists is to filter out anything which is just a novelty and focus on a combination of game-changes which make it a blast to play.

logo-f3.png

Main
Project Beauty
NMC's Texture Pack
Fellout
MTUI
RH Ironsights
Martigan's Mutant Mod
Fallout: Wanderer's Edition
DC Interiors Project
Ultimate Perk Pack
Weapon Mod Kits

Compatibility
FOIP - MMM, F:WE and PB patch
FOIP - MMM and F:WE patch

Notable extras are Weapon Mod Kits and MTUI. I actually prefer MTUI to Darnified because it just removes the console-itis from the UI without putting a really naff font on everything like DUI does. Also, Ultimate Perk Pack is lots of fun. It makes the perk system feel a lot more like New Vegas, because it adds perks which are gained through story events and gameplay choices. And some of the new perks are awesome, like Evil Genius which is the equivalent of 3 levels of the Swift Learner perk as long as you maintain a karmic level of Very Evil.

If you install a weather mod like Nevada Skies which makes night a lot darker, you'll really need this. Well, at least until you find a nightvision cybernetic implant...

Good job remembering to add the New Vegas bounty mods. They're so damn well done I sometimes end up thinking I'm playing official DLC. I really liked the more open ended approach part 2 took instead of just running back and forth for each bounty.

Thanks for suggesting it, I've had a lot of fun with it :)

Did you try A World of Pain? It's a funny one. There is this huge maze of underground passages near Goodsprings which is overflowing with hordes of nasties. I went in there at level 8 (stupidly) and got destroyed, so I think it's supposed to be like the infinite end-game dungeon in Torchlight in that it's something to do after you've already finished everything else.
