Don't think that was as much a criticism of 12. 12's world was brilliantly crafted in the options you had.
One of my favourites. But it had an illusion of freedom rather than actual freedom, you could go do a hunt rather than the story but wouldn't be able to get to a location due to a rainstorm or other issue. Calling it too linear would be a mistake on my part but it had a strange way of limiting freedom whilst trying to make you think you had it.
