Can anyone give a quick summary of this thread and what's been happening?
"The PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of GDDR5 its 8GB memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current documentation PS4 shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed source in the studio. However, other sources suggest that an additional 1GB of "flexible memory" can be claimed of booking OS, based on availability."

Indeed. The OS should be embedded and running in its own pool of resources and not fighting for control of everything else on the system.
Pretty sure Sony is reserving the 2.5GB just to future proof itself. We have to remember that this console could potentially be around for 8 years, and who knows what could change in that time?
At least with Sony reserving that RAM from the very beginning, they won't have to sacrifice backwards compatibility with initial PS4 games if they decide to do something radical with the hardware/OS in the future. If they don't, they can always open up some of the RAM for developers to use.
And don't most current AAA PC games only use like, 3-4GB of RAM/VRAM total?
I miss they days when gaming OSes were just the thing that came up when the game failed to boot PS2/GCN/XBOX era style. All of these bloated features feel pointless to me. I rarely ever use a gaming system OS to do anything, and using a little less than half of the system memory for OS tidy work is a real put off on a console. I might as well buy a PC in that case, at least that OS has features I'll use.Indeed. Wow, this is huge for me. Really puts the two machines on par for gaming power. Now I may really have to decide wether or not kinect will be worth the bump in price.
I knew it! Lol
yea you would love that wouldn't you? You would probably have 5 orgasms if 10 seconds if that were true.
"OMG PS4 RAM REDUCTIIOOONN WIIIUUUU WIIIUUUUUU WIUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU IWATAA"
I'll gift a PS4 to 50 lucky gaffers.
Haha, well, first xbox fanboys were happy, then they were sad, now they are mildly happy again. Can anyone give a quick summary of this thread and what's been happening?

Other way around i guess ( sad, happy, mildly sad.)What about Sony fanboys?
When the OS changes that drastically, of course you can.
I guess it's inevitable they had to use some RAM for the OS.
what I don't get it why they need 3.5 GB, it's not like they're trying to be a fake ass media box like a certain product starting with a X
"according to current documentation PS4 shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed source in the studio"
Oh, that same DF that is consistently wrong about everything?
Haha. I'd kill myself before buying one too.
Anyhow, in all seriousness, this was an entertaining thread. Pretty much why I like GAF.

After seeing everyone bash the Xbox one for using 3GB for the OS. This made me chuckle

Just have to hope BOTH optimize their OSes over time to free up more space I guess. After seeing everyone bash the Xbox one for using 3GB for the OS. This made me chuckle
Calling bullshit. Unless the PS4 can multitask on par with the Xbone there's no need for them to waste 3.5 gigs of GDDR5 ram.
especially since the last word was 1GB for OS. No fathomable way the OS usage more then tripled overnight.
GPU is weaker in xb
RAM is slower in xb
And less RAM, slower RAM, is potentially available for games in xb.
It doesn't change the landscape here.
And GDDR5.Damn, aren't you forgot about GPU? lol

What are you talking about, exactly? Why do you think that the PS4 won't have access to cloud servers? But MS can offload processes to the cloud. PS4 will need the extra ram to run the ai and world lighting.
Yes, but if your PC only had 2GB RAM you'd have trouble. Think of the 3.5GB as a partition, not the amount that's always being used.3.5GB of GDDR5 RAM utilized for OS bullshit is fucking ridiculous. I have Windows 7 with Firefox (3 tabs open), Ventrilo, Steam, Origin, EVGA Percision X, and other shit like that, and i'm not even using 2GB right now.
