I found myself at Target this morning. Bought the Blu Ray set along with an Infamous 2 PS3 bundle to replace my wheezy 40 gigger.

I am sure this post upsets more than one fanboy faction on GAF. Hah.

The woman walking my PS3 to the front told me that there were a bunch of "losers" standing outside Target when they opened. Two of these guys inspected "over 50 copies" of the set, looking for ones whose shrink wrap was "pristine" because they were "collectors". They then proceeded to buy two copies for obvious reasons.

I was laughing so hard I forgot to ask her if they were wearing Jedi gear.

I bought the complete saga this morning. I wasn't going to, but when I saw that the display case was a giant AT-AT, nostalgia hit me and I pretty much had to.

Jedi Mind Trick.
Works on the weak minded
(Don't really mean it, just wanted to get a Star Wars reference in here. ;P)

I made it through TPM AOTC and 30 min of ROTS last night. The PQ for ROTS is reference!!!
Also I have never experience better sound in my life. I will hopefully watch the rest of Sith tonight, and then hit up the OT.

I am so happy. I will watch these over and over.

Fuck. Now you're making me want to buy them all.

I love how the tone of this thread has shifted now that the Blu-Rays are available. :)

I ordered mine from Barnes and Noble when they had that sale a few weeks back. It shipped yesterday, but I can't track it. Not sure if it is arriving today or not. Anyone else order from B&N and get their set?

Speaking for myself, I never really participated in this thread until now. I would check in from time to time, laugh at the craziness, and check out. Anyone who wants to blow the roof off is going to buy these movies, changes or no. We've been waiting for these for too long to just them them pass by.

So have I, and I'm passing them by just fine.

no wonder we still don't have good copies of the original movies

Pretty much.

Changes or no changes how can you not buy them. To watch them as a complete saga is one of the most amazing experiences you can have. Now someone please tell me why I enjoyed TPM and AOTC so much last night????

Same here. I've commented here and there, but otherwise I've stayed out of the fray.

Because while they're not nearly as good as the OT, they're still not nearly as bad as a lot of people would lead you to believe. They have issues, but they are, at the end of the day, still Star Wars.

Haha, so true.

I'm staying strong. Despecialized versions only until we get the original versions. I might have bitten on this one if they'd actually fixed the errors from 2004 instead of wasting time making bigger doors and more rocks.

I'm sorry but the changes to the movies change what 5 minutes of actual film? get over your hatred and embrace the only star wars movies that came out on Blu ray today.

not buying them because you don't like the changes does nothing but stop you from watching them right now.

Only good thing to come out of this is that I and a lot of others were made aware of those versions, hopefully he re-does them using the Blu-Rays as a new base instead of the HDTV versions.

as much as I want these.. I think I will wait to Christmas.. being a College student tends to suck away whatever money you have. (especially when you have a tuition bill)

that wont stop me from renting them however to hold me over.

I considered buying the original trilogy but we've got the 2004 DVDs here and I've sat through the HDTV versions, I'd rather pick up the PotC boxset instead.

Wouldn't mind watching the despecialised cuts but worried they'd look shitty blown up on a larger screen.

This release is like a big chocolate sundae mixed with little bits of turd. If you buy it, you're bound to bite into one of those chunks and notice the taste isn't what it's supposed to be. Some people can rationalize it away. The chunks aren't that big, the rest of it tastes pretty good and everyone who doesn't like turd chunks are just haters. Other people have a threshold. If only a particular chunk was excised, they'd buy it and be willing to stomach the rest.

Personally, there's a lot of other things I could be enjoying instead. So I'll wait for a release that's more appetizing.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?

You're right. George Lucas has no clue that there is a demand for them and therefore just assumes everything is hunky dory with putting out the altered versions. Maybe someone should say something about it on the internet? He has to be told!

Copy/pasting LD versions that aren't even made for widescreen tvs? Can you imagine if someone had done that to any famous movie when putting it on dvd?

You mean like The Abyss, True Lies, and TITANIC?

It took years and bitching to get an anamorphic Titanic, and they've NEVER released an anamorphic Abyss or True Lies.

for what? enjoying Star Wars on Blu ray with arguably the best sound of any version? oh and the 40 hours of special features that come with it.

The special features are one of the big reasons I bought it.

This just isn't the "Journal of the Whills" collection I always hoped for though.

The prospect of Star Wars on Blu-Ray is too great. I love the franchise.
I love it too. But yeah, if the changes and so on didn't bother you from the beginning when they were announced then that's fine and you are not weak-willed. I'm talking about people who were pretty adamant earlier about no purchase, and are now fine about it; surely if it's too good to pass up now it was too good to pass up before, heh.

I assume copies will be plentiful. Will probably pick up the set this weekend, just no time for it right now. More excited about Clone Wars season 4 starting up than the blu rays of these at the moment... I dunno

no, you missed the point dude

obviously he knows
but when every copy he releases sells fucking millions because fans just buy it anyway, what incentive does he have to release the old cuts?
the only way to get them is vote with your dollars. don't buy the new versions unless he releases the old ones as well
obviously not enough people care, but whatever. i do, so i'm just not gonna buy them. i'm not losing any sleep over it

Large portion of the sales is mostly going to be for the non hardcore fans. Most people are going to pick it up because its Star Wars and they will have no clue about these changes that were made to the films.

It just shows you how much of a non-issue this is for the average fan. Yes, it gets tons of attention on the Internet amongst the impassioned fans, but quite honestly we're a rather small minority. I haven't heard a single person in real life comment on the changes, let alone say they won't buy it because of them.

The trouble is that Lucas hates the old cuts. He loathes them and wishes he could wipe them from the public's memory. I doubt he will ever spend a cent on an improved re-release of those versions, no matter the demand.

mattp said:
a fan is a fan. they dont have to be "hardcore"
like i said, most don't care

Even non fans are going to be buying it. Has nothing really to do with level of fandom, it's star wars... everyone is going to be buying this shit

i know he does. but he doesnt hate them more than he loves money.
if his new cuts didn't sell, i guarantee you a set with both versions would be rushed into production

That's probably true but as we all know that would never happen. Like you say, most fans don't give a shit or are too young to know any better.

yep
thus, i'll stick with the despecialized editions and enjoy them quite a bit. maybe lucas will have a heart attack one day and someone will give the old cuts the proper treatment, but until then i'm good not paying money for these movies ever again

No I understood exactly what you meant. You think if sales are poor because people protest by refusing to by the altered versions then he'll have more incentive to get the originals out. The problem is it just doesn't make a lick of difference.

You read almost any forum that caters to geek types and mention the prequels and you'll be told they are an atrocity committed against mankind as some of the worse displays of movie making in history. The truth is, the vast majority of people think they range from meh to pretty fricken sweet! My feelings for example are that some of the scenes in the prequels are cringe worthy but a lot of moments are pretty fricken sweet. I don't get tired of Yoda fighting Dooku, that scene rocks.

So what of they're losing some sales from people who won't buy these, they won't even notice.
