Here is the director shortlist for Bond 25.

Per deadline:
While there has been published speculation about Dunkirk‘s Christopher Nolan and Baby Driver‘s Edgar Wright possibly surfacing as each did the press tour on those hit films, I'm hearing that the three frontrunners to direct the next James Bond movie are Yann Demange, Denis Villenueve and David Mackenzie.

Demange directed '71, an electric 2014 thriller that starred Jack O'Connell as a British soldier left behind the lines in Northern Ireland after dark, who struggles to get safe. He is currently directing White Boy Rick, with Matthew McConaughey leading the ensemble.

Villenueve is coming off the Best Picture nominee Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, the Alcon sequel which will be released by Warner Bros October 6.

Mackenzie directed Best Picture nominee Hell or High Water, and he signed on to direct Outlaw King, the story of Scottish king Robert the Bruce, which most know from Braveheart. These are top of the food chain filmmakers, all.

As for Nolan and Wright, each has shown some exuberance about Bond duty, but the likelier scenario is they would take over the franchise down the line when it is inevitably rebooted and they can start from scratch.

EDIT: For those asking whether or not Purvis & Wade are back,
Bond 25 will be written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who penned Casino Royale,Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

Not sure how they hit a 2019 date if Denis is going to work on Dune next.

Especially after this quote:

The problem right now, and something I want to change, I worked very fast. I did Prisoners, and then after that, in the past six years I have done five movies — which is not a good idea! It’s too fast. And I learned a lot, I learned so much, for the time now I need just a little time to digest. After Blade Runner, as I’m working on Dune, I would love to just digest and then come back with more energy for Dune with fresh ideas. I need that right now! And so I need distance a little bit

McKenzie would be a phenomenal pick. Hell or High Water was stunning, and I can easily see how his style would make a Bond film click. Villeneuve would also be awesome. Not familiar with the third dude's work.

While I would've loved for Nolan to slip in, it was always a long shot. Dude doesn't need to do a franchise film at this point.

I will watch anything be Villenueve, but not sure how I feel about him doing Bond. Although, a "final" Bond with Craig could be pretty awesome by Denis.

Don't waste Villeneuve on a new Craig Bond movie please.

Think of it as a dark, moody spy thriller conclusion. Could be cool. Go all out for the last one. I don't think he would be a good fit for a new Bond "series"

Did they forget Christopher Nolan?
Reading is an important skill.

In short, they might want to direct a Bond film in the future but it doesn't seem likely they'll pick Bond as their next project.

I feel like Nolan would be best fit for a reboot. He kiiiinda signaled he felt the same way too. Edit: Already covered above haha.

And I'm not sure it will ultimately work out anyway. Nolan's used to total freedom over at Warner. Not sure Bond/Eon will be a good fit for him, considering.

I read it, I just still want it to happen for Bond 25 :p

Not gonna happen, I think. Nolan would probably only do it if he was allowed to have total control over the film, from screenplay to casting.

Granted, that wouldn't inherently be a bad thing, as I think his first pick for casting Bond would almost definitely be Tom Hardy, but still. It's still Craig's Bond, so I doubt Nolan would want to do it until he was offered an entirely clean slate to work with.

Villenueve could mean Deakins coming back to the franchise.

I would like another Bond film as spectacular looking as Skyfall.

Demange would do a great job, and I'd rather see Villeneuve and Mackenzie do something more interesting.

That's where I'm at. It's definitely nothing against Demange, since '71 is a nice little thriller and he totally deserves a bigger profile, but Villeneuve's schedule is packed as it is and I'm pretty sure that Mackenzie is already in pre-production on his Robert the Bruce film that he's been wanting to do for a while.

Not familiar with Demange's work, but I think Mackenzie would be a great choice and Villenueve would be an absolutely incredible choice, but one that I think would be unlikely.

Like I've said before though, Casino Royale and Craig feels exactly like the type of reboot and Bond Nolan would make/pick anyway.

Well hopefully Bond gets rebooted by Nolan soon, because we haven't had a Bond movie that meets the quality of Casino Royale since it's release.

Denis Villenueve and David Mackenzie are both incredible choices. I don't know much about Yann Demange, but that's a strong list of directors.

I think I'd prefer Mackenzie for Bond over Denis, tbh. If only for selfish reasons like wanting to see his Dune sooner than later.

huh? including blade runner 2049 he'll have released 3 straight movies in 3 years, and 2 movies in one year a little bit before that.
There's no way Dune makes 2018. The size of that project dwarfs his earlier films, and it hasn't even entered pre-production yet.

Like I said above though, I don't think Nolan is going to mesh well with Eon given the freedom he's accustomed to. Seems like a pairing that would result in Nolan walking followed by a production disaster.

Eh. I hope none of them waste their time on this franchise. Bond doesn't need actual filmmakers under Eon. The Broccolis should have just cloned Guy Hamilton long ago.
