Here is the director shortlist for Bond 25.

If Villeneuve is on that shortlist I'm thinking Warners has distro rights.

Also if Villeneuve actually takes the job (which would be... huh) I can't imagine he doesn't bring in another writer to re-do whatever Purvis/Wade cook up.

Which is way more important than whether or not a great director takes the chair.

Casino Royale & GoldenEye aren't top-tier Bonds because of Martin Campbell. They're top tier because they're literally the best stories the series has had since 1977.

I feel like a lot of people are looking at this as some sort of stop gap until the inevitable reboot. Who would want to helm a project with that sort of indifference surrounding it (if not outright cynicism), and why not just skip the middleman and reboot right now?

So would the idea be Denis does this in between blade runner and dune? Cause if fucking bond takes him off of dune I'll throw a fit. Gimme hell or high water guy that movie was great and I'll still get my dune

Not sure how they hit a 2019 date if Denis is going to work on Dune next.

Especially after this quote:

Villeneuve has no time to work on this shit.

I don't expect Nolan to ever will either. I think he would require more control than the Broccolis would ever be willing to give.

Oh, I didn't even know '71 existed. The trailer looks really good.

It's pretty intense for its duration. It does an almost alarming job of what it feels like to be hunted down in an urban environment, and the era that it evokes only adds to the constant danger. It's a little long for the ground it covers, but it's definitely a very effective thriller all the same.

Dune. It means Dune.

If Warner nabbed the rights, then they'll probably push hard for Nolan in the next reboot. You think they'd be able to convince Eon to back the hell off and let him do his thing?

Birth.Movies.Death dropped a rumor in their recent Bond update that suggests EON is strongly considering selling itself to a studio once this one is done.

Warners might be (if this is playing out correctly) putting itself in a position to buy Bond outright.

Which is probably why all the Nolan speculation has been all hot & heavy the last week.

Denis Villenueve and David Mackenzie are both incredible choices. I don't know much about Yann Demange, but that's a strong list of directors.

I think I'd prefer Mackenzie for Bond over Denis, tbh. If only for selfish reasons like wanting to see his Dune sooner than later.

'71 was a good, tense little film.

Eh. I hope none of them waste their time on this franchise. Bond doesn't need actual filmmakers under Eon. The Broccolis should have just cloned Guy Hamilton long ago.

Guy Hamilton wasn't even the best (or second best for that matter) director to helm a Bond film back in the 60's though...

They did Peter Hunt dirty by only letting him direct one Bond film ever.

If Villeneuve is on that shortlist I'm thinking Warners has distro rights.

Agreed, and really, I'm not all that surprised. I figured it would be Warner Bros that would get the rights for distribution.

As for a director bringing in another writer to re-do whatever Purvis and Wade do, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened with both Casino Royale and Skyfall. P/W did the first draft, someone else came in to do the final draft. Could be misremembering that though, I'm not entirely sure.

EDIT: Also, doing a bit more research, I'm betting that it'll probably be Demange who gets the job. Either him or Mackenzie.

Well damn. Would be a huge get for Warner, for sure, and you know they'd be salivating at the idea of their golden boy heading up a billion dollar IP like Bond.

Any reason given for the potential sale?

Truth. The directors haven't been the problem, they need good scripts. I can't get excited about Nolan or Villeneuve if they don't have enough control to make the movie their own. I say get a warm body in the director's chair for Daniel's swan song and then if Bond really gets sold off, you bring in a visionary to kickstart a new era.

No reasons were given, but if I had to speculate, I wouldn't be surprised if they're just tired of wrangling this fucking thing. It's been more or less a non-stop horriffic mess between films no matter what on the production side of things for like, 20 straight years. I can see that being enough of a grind that both Broccoli & Wilson would at least consider the option of "fuck this. Cash it out. We don't need this anymore."

The company has almost always seemed like a badly organized clusterfuck even at its most successful in modern times. It gets exhausting just following it.

Imagine owning it.

I can't see Denis Villenueve having the time to do it.

But both Yann Demange and David Mackenzie are top choices interestingly they've both worked with Jack O'Connell who I think would make a damm solid Bond. He has the acting chops and the physicality.

Out of the two I'd lean towards Demange 71' is a stellar movie tight and taut. Something the Bond movies could really need a rush of.

Edgar Wright or Nolan would be amazing, when they reboot it. If Edgar Wright has indeed expressed interest you know he must have some amazing ideas.

Hopefully, the Broccolis sell it to one of the big studios, who will reboot it after Craigs one last final movie.

That's more or less what I expected. Interesting if it all turns out to be true. I'm curious to see what a fully Warner Bond franchise would look like going forward.

Guess it's time to start campaigning for George Miller Bond.

Call me when they do Night Of The Bond and Dalton dies and is replaced with Ben Kingsley who teams up with Brosnan and Craig and they make Day Of The Bond where they fight to stop Kingsley blowing up London to end the Spy War.

They really want to do another reboot?

After how well the last one went?

Fine, I guess. I mean if you're going to get DA GAWD Nolan to make a Bond movie, it would make sense to wipe the slate clean to let him have as much freedom as he wants. I don't think Wright would be a good pick for Bond, though, he's good at comedy and modern Bond has been trying to avoid comedy for a good reason.

Every actor change is effectively a reboot, even if the prior changes had some minor semblance of a shared continuity.

And didn't the last one uh... do very well? Unless you're not referring to Casino?

A reboot with Nolan/Villenueve directing back to back would be super hype but I very much doubt either are going to be working on Bond in the near future.

Please keep Nolan the fuck away from Bond. Last thing I want that man to do is get stuck on an already established IP. Keep making new IPs GOATlan. Villenueve is shitting gold atm, so he's the safest bet. I'd like him to do it through a reboot than now though tbh

Villenueve is without a doubt a better director than Nolan but you should know about using RT as a barometer for that.

Nolan wants to do a Bond movie, though. And if his home studio gets the distro rights -- and especially if that BMD rumor pans out, and Broccoli and Wilson are looking to sell the franchise to WB (or whomever) altogether -- than the likelihood of Nolan actually doing it goes way up.

If Nolan were on for Bond 26, he'd still have time to crank out another original movie. He's pretty consistent at delivering a new movie every 2-3 years as is.

Villenueve is really doubtful. But if Warner does get Bond outright and wants a reboot? I'd legitimately be shocked if it doesn't go to Nolan. It's literally the exact scenario Nolan would want, and WB would be ecstatic at the idea of one of their brands (Nolan might as well be one of their top three brands next to DC and Potter) directing another one of their biggest brands again.
