Horizon Zero Dawn |OT| The Land After Time

Killed my first Thunderjaw last night. What a fight! I love the combat in this game. Also finally moved onto the Sunlands after what must be 15 hours in the Sacred Lands.

Blackthorn

"hello?" "this is vagina"
My love for slowly walking around the world and fighting everything I come across means I'll probably hit 80 hours in this by the time I plat it.

Well written? I find most of the dialogue very basic and video gamey, especially with Aloy constantly talking to herself.

Damn, where is a F O X S K I N ??? Looking for ages

Just completed it and obtained the platinum trophy. I almost never go for those so I think it's a testament to how amazing this game really is.

I loved every minute of it. Take a bow Guerrilla Games!

The main story's plot and dialogue is actually very well written. They made it quite mainstream which is probably what you're referring to. It may not be as complex or become as dark as games like Witcher 3 and VNs, but in terms of having a coherent plot, good characters with motivations and lots of memorable NPCs, it's one of the best.

Open world games always had trouble with what they want in their stories with what you actually do and it usually ends up a convoluted mess. Thankfully, Horizon doesn't suffer from any of that. It was great to jump between sidequests and the main quests and it never lost its thread and kept me intrigued.

Also, YOU WILL NEVER FIND FOX SKINS.
I got one after killing 35 foxes

Nothing was more upsetting than getting a blue icon after killing a fox/boar/turkey and getting an animal talisman. GRRRRRRR

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Having played several of the story missions things are pretty dark and grim in some parts
The entire story behind the Faro plague and then the horrible lie behind the meat grinder of Enduring Victory was pretty damn dark even if it was done to save the world.

Yeah backstory wise is pretty dark and grim .
Both in current time and way in the past .

The General's desire to leave behind a confession to the future of humanity over his cause in both the mechanization of the military and the Enduring Victory lie as well as the war that ensued put it all in perspective. Saying his Death Toll was beyond the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan was the heavy part. He basically had the human race fight to the last man or near to it to stay the machines. Brutal

Lmao, the struggle is real! I'm still running around trying to get the last ingredients to max out the pouches. I wish there were areas where one type of animal congregated or if you could kill the livestock of settlements. That talisman sucks, it doesn't even have a real function besides being sold. Why is that so valuable compared to getting something that allows you to enhance your equipment.

*One thing the sequel needs to add is the ability to set the number of things you want to buy rather than having you buy each one individually. That was a silly thing to not catch.

Im nearly done the game but can we all agree that
Ted Faro
was a massive moron.
Like everything was his fault. I can't believe he began the plague then killed apollo after elisabeth died.

Also, brilliant game so far. Loving it. Maybe one of my favourite of all time. The lore and stories have been fantastic.

As much as I'm loving the game I hope if there's a sequel they cut back a lot of human encounters. There's way too much human encounters for my taste, considering the good combat mechanics are better shown while fighting robodinos.

See I feel the opposite way, I'm way more interested in continuing with tribal plots and politics in a sequel. Those were the most enjoyable aspects of the game to me, although I think the main campaign was superb. That being said RoboDino combat was far better than the human combat, maybe they can expand on both types of combat in a sequel.

Very true. Guess when I meant dark, I meant more disturbing psychological horror or sexual kinda things.

They don't have to cut back that much just it better .
From KZ we know they could have done better .
I think this being there first open world game is what cause the bad AI for humans .
They should expand the melee combat and AI vs humans in the second one .

I'd actually love to explore the West after reading that one datapoint about all the explorers sent out there returning half mad and nearly dead or not at all.
Stuff like fields of grass sharp as blades and the machines far stranger and terrible than those known

It's not about the story, I actually find the tribal story interesting too.

Is about the combat, human encounters are just your standard encounters found in million diferent games, while robodinos encounters are more fresh and takes the most about the combat system, stealth, override, rolling, different weapons and status...

I guess so, but I dunno how they can make it better enough to be comparable with robot encounters. Maybe with better melee system, as you say, I guess.

I said it earlier but I think they should just integrate human's into machine combat more and I don't just mean fighting one another. Advance the story several years and make the overriding and control of machines is a common thing among the tribes
Maybe not the Nora because you know
and you would be fighting human's riding on Striders launching volley's of arrows at you or perhaps you'd see a Tall Neck loaded up with weapons like a walking weapons platform manned by several human enemies. Things of that nature. They should also improve their individual AI and make them more interesting and fun to take on but I think tying them in better with the main hook of the game would go a long way to making them something to look forward to.

I just did the mission where you find out the meaning behind the games subtitle.
I don't think I've seen anything where humanity nukes itself in order to get through the apocalypse. Usually it's them trying avoid the nukes and machines, e.g. Terminator. I'm sitting there, watching it, and thinking, "God damn! Did they nuke themselves? Is that what the last resort was?"
Can't wait to jump back in find out what actually happened.

Edit: just to be clear, in case someone accidentally corrects me and spoils it,
I'm assuming that's what was implied in Elizabeth and Faro's discussion logs at the top of the Faro tower

I took it as the burning of the world meant the aftermath of the Faro machines running amok and burning up the biomass of half the world was destroying the environment. Though it could be nukes as well since I don't think they're ever clear if humanity burned half the world or it was the machines eating half the world.

Holy shit just hit my first storm bird as I head to meridian. This thing is a beast , long range attacks , monsters you up close and has that drill attack which wipes you in one hit. After 10 mins of fighting I got it down to about 25 health then it just wiped me out .

Any tips ? I've got mostly blue weapons

Are there any trophies tied to difficulty? I did have it on Hard, but have also been letting my 7 year old daughter play and have been switching down to Easy for her. I thought I'd kept the save files separate but I let her have a go this morning and apparently I'd already been playing on Easy. I hope this hasn't cooked up any trophies I could have otherwise earned. I've not long done Cauldron Rho which was pretty hard, but did a bandit camp maybe an hour or two later and they may have been on Easy as it went surprisingly well and I managed to stealth it entirely.

Nope. You can plat it on easy.

I found the writing to be fairly average, occasionally even good. Side quests are your standard fare and the main plotline doesn't venture far from the "Chosen One" structure. Where the game separates itself is in its novel setting, the world and history are genuinely interesting and full of potential.

No i know they are mugs and the purple box is usually pretty visible but i just cant find this particular one.

yeah I had a hard time with that one as well. It is in a pile of junk near a building iirc, like right near a wall. Kinda blends in with the background

there were a lot of those though, so I might be mixing it up.

Hunting trials are frustrating sometimes. The stealth one with you trying to pick out watchers - quietly - in among shell walkers and stalkers wasn't much fun.

Do I have to get all blazing suns for the platinum?

Yes.

To all of it

I swear
if Tom fucking Faro some how survived and was the one who activated the signal for HADES

I might not buy the game lol

Yes, if you have the quiet sprint ability it makes the trail much more easier.

Just finished it and thought it was absolutely fantastic. I don't know that anything will be able to top it as my goty which says a lot considering how strong this year has been (and yes, that includes Zelda). I'm missing only the training dummy trophy for the platinum, which shouldn't be too difficult. Would be my first platinum ever, never was invested enough in trophies but here I got all but the one just by playing through it naturally.

Really looking forward to the sequel now though they should definitely take their time with it. Things I'd like to see improved:

1. Make the world a bit more dynamic i.e. more interactions between the machines. Considering how you can get them to fight each other it looks like the foundation is already there, they just need to expand upon it. I also would like to see more interplay between the different tribes which would feel natural seeing what the state of the world is by the end.

2. Improve the combat against humans. Since you can headshot so efficiently that part of the game was never particularly engaging, though I did enjoy lighting the blaze canisters on the back of certain enemies. I don't necessarily have a suggestion on how to pull it off but I think most people would agree that they have to do something about it.

3. Expand the sidequests. I really enjoyed what was there, especially the hunter's lodge and the queen's gambit quest series and I wish every sidequest was that involved. I think it's fine to differentiate between errands and sidequests but then you should focus on making those sidequests as involved as possible and there's definitely some room for improvement here. Similar to the Witcher 3 there's also an overreliance on the "follow these tracks with your detective vision" design but they don't reach the narrative highs that a lot of the Witcher quests do so it was even more noticeable in this case.

4. Expand the dialogue system. This one goes hand in hand with my previous point and it is something I saw other people mention quite a bit as well. Aloy is a great character and it would be nice if they'd give you the option to choose what to say more frequently. It also should matter more what you say and to whom.

5. Make the collectibles matter. Make no mistake, I had a good time collecting all the flowers, figures and vessels but that was mostly because the world is a joy to travel through. I just liked seeing where the search would lead me and that in and of itself was enough of a reward to keep me going but what actually get for collecting them is pretty much useless. Obviously it would also be nice if they could find a more interesting way to tie it into the lore. They kind of tried but there was never a good reason to get them all.

Those are the points that stand out to me off the top of my head. Definitely a great comeback for Guerilla Games after Shadowfall which I thought was awful, at least the singleplayer.

nearing the end, & the only thing i'm not getting, timeline-wise, is all the stone architecture: as in,
who built it, when, why is so much of it seemingly neglected or falling apart, & why is nothing new being built anywhere? has it all stopped & been let go because of the derangement? but the signs of neglect seem to precede that...

Can you kill Tallnecks?

Should I even kill them? They look like peaceful creature. I don't have the heart....unless there's a trophy for it or lots and lots of goodies to loot.

Great, now I feel bad just for wanting to kill it.

I don't think you can attack them no. If you stand to close to them they will walk over you though lol. And by walk over, I mean crush you to death.

Seeing thunderjaws hunting other grazers would be great, like that scene in the first Jurassic park were the T. rex comes out of nowhere to kill some fodder dinosaur

I will pre-order the CE no matter what, but I wouldn't mind killing Faro's ass. In fact, it would be like some justice porn

Finished the game/Im at the credits/Got the platinum.

What an incredible game. Maybe my favourite game of all time. The story, characters, lore, combat, incredible. Voice acting was top notch too.

Brilliant writing overall. The world is crafted so beautifully.

Also, concerning the ending:
WHAT THE HELL SYLENS
