Infamous Second Son: What Delsin was supposed to look like pre-beanie

I honestly think they gave him a beanie because its less resource intensive and they wouldn't have to worry about the physics/TressFX for it. Look at how much attention Tomb Raider got for Lara's hair. The same reason many games go for the helmeted look on enemies ala Killzone. Faces and hair are hard to get exactly right and are quite obvious when they are off.

Game looks amazing, so I'm glad they used the resources where they felt it mattered more.

The version we got is great. Delsin is a fun character, I like him.

This concept art, even removing the stereotypical elements, doesn't quite visually fit with the tone that SS ultimately has visually. He looks more like a comic book or fighting game character in those concepts.

The hair didn't mater. It was changing the entire facial structure.

They look similar enough to me, especially when you consider the art change from inFamous 1 and 2.

what isn't douchie to you people?

Seemingly anything different or unique is considered "douchie". Its seems like most people just want a generic design.

IMO, a character should look visually distinct so I prefer this concept Delsin over beanie Delsin.

Gotta say that that's one of the most stereotypical/borderline racist character concepts I've seen in a while.

Seems like it'd go hand-in-hand with the Akomish lodge at the start actually being a casino, though. Maybe that was on the table at one point.

Started the game yesterday and now finally know what they meant by tribe, lol.

Like the final Delsin design and he is a great character so far.

I always have a chuckle when people complain about Del's name, "tribal" tats and beanie. I guess Seattle's image isn't very strong in the public consciousness; Native American communities, disaffected youth and shitty weather are not unheard of here.

I think Del's final design is fairly well thought out and appropriate, and I won't even deny that it's a little douchy.

Personally, I think the current Delsin design is one of the most annoying looking characters I've ever seen. I want to slap him. The things he has going for him in the game is his humor/voice/powers. Design-wise, he looks the epitome of terrible, between his cross-eyed face, pitiful physique and skinny jeans. Would it kill him to do some damn pushups?

I would have been happier with the original design. At least he doesn't look like a deadbeat suffering from anorexia.

Are SP even capable of good character design at this point? I think i've disliked the look of every major character since they started adding all the idiot sidekicks to sly cooper.

I still hate the design for this character, because I absolutely can't stand tattoos. They should make that crap optional, I find it very annoying that it is becoming more commonplace.

The whole tattoo thing totally ruined Cole in inFamous 2 and Jason in FarCry 3 for me (aesthetically). I find it ironic that many game designers are trying to incorporate different types of characters in their game so more people can be included, but they don't mind alienating those of us who have a dislike of certain things on their protagonist. I can't wait for all video game protagonists to have piercings through their face.
:( Im a tattooist and i felt alienated for years when characters didn't have tattoo's.

I still like the pretty Cole. I hope he comes back as a new character.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Quite happy that Delsin isn't a walking racial stereotype. Good on you, SP.

We always have hope for ISS 2. SP can skirt by with the excuse that it would've taken longer to fully render the character. It wasn't possible given their time contrainsts having to meet a near launch window.

I like this design better than the current character. Get rid of the t-shirt wrapped around his waste and this is totally workable.

You are objectively wrong. If is fine if you think that the changed design that was originally going to be in second game looked better, since that is an opinion, but it wasn't ever just about adding hair to him. Even in your two low res screen shots the only thing similar about the two is being white guys.

To be honest I didn't even like Cole's original design but he is the character that I got use to playing as and it is really shitty to just straight up change an established characters design in the middle of a series. It is funny that the article you linked is a reason why I hated them trying to change his look. Making him younger and more handsome to appeal to a different audience. People that enjoyed and got to know him in the first game? Fuck them, these other people think hes too old looking.

The same now goes for Deslin. I didn't really care much for what he looks like wouldn't want them changing him around now after the game is already out and his story has already started.

Actually I like both of the designs. But beanie Delsin looks cooler :p
One of the reasons for the change is probably the fact thatproperly rendering and animating long hair is one of the worst nightmares for game developers, and most simply avoid it altogether.

Really? Even for a PS4 game? I remember Platinum saying they avoided long hair for Bayonetta in Bayo 1 because it was hard for them to do so, but that was last gen and they are no technical maniacs. But for a next gen game and Sucker Punch, is it still hard to render and animate a long hair? Kinda surprising.

That crotch sweater and long hair would have been a pain to animate especially for the flying animations. But I like the Nighthawk/grunge/metal look. The game should've allowed for some customization - if you don't want hair then shave it off and wear a beanie.

I love Delsin, glad they went with the look he has now as opposed to this lol. Remember when they temporarily gave Cole that horrific redesign for infamous 2? Thank god they changed that too lol that was awful.

Does everyone look at character design as if it's people they like to hang around with in real life? Get over it people. I want games to be more out there with characters, stop caring about if it works in a real life perspective or not. OG Dante is awesome design, Kratos is awesome design, Delsin is awesome design. Stop scaring developers away from weird and wonderful ideas because we'll just be stuck with generic good looking guys or bald space marines.

It looks better with the beanie. I don't like that design at all.

Tbh, it was quite funny (or stupid) hearing those developers saying how good and smooth Lara's hair looked with TressFX (which I read as Tress effecs and totally sounds like a shampoo) when it's suppose to be covered by mug and other stuff. I think this wasn't the better game to showcase this kind of tech, to be honest. But whatever.

Good grief no. I rather like Delsin's look. Lean and lanky and fairly believable. I always figured he had long hair but hidden in the beanie which fits his character. I'd probably have liked his face to have slightly stronger ethnic features (Reggie too) but I liked that while noted and a factor in who Delsin is his ethnicity wasn't forced in the game.
