Marvelous announces Uppers for PS Vita

Marvelous knows how to make a solid beat-em-up. Looking forward to more details. The fanservice sounds super cheeseball and goofy, which I'm sure is what they're going for.

Man, and I was all excited for this...

Fan service is out of control.

Its pretty much expected at this point when it comes to stuff Marvelous related. Its what brought down Luminous Arc Infinity also all that useless touch mechanic they added, which is an actual requirement for the game itself as they designed it as a fairly important mechanic...

Looks good, hopefully SpikeChunsoft follows up with a new Kenka Bancho if not a port of Kenka Bancho 6, it bomb the 3DS because it wasn't the right audience for it.

Perhaps the audience wasn't there - or perhaps the audience for this type of game has dissipated.

That's all we know, even in those tiny shots it already looks good imo.

Hey, this looks cool...

Hachima Kikou has got the furage.

From the creator of Senran Kagura (Takagi), Uppers is coming out in Spring 2016.

Battles are fought in front of girls, and doing well by defeating the enemies will result in their encouragement, powering the character up. By doing really well, the character can bury his face in their chest or grab it.

Dang it, Takagi!

People who like this stuff are so pathetic. And it's pathetic that Marvelous/Takagi feel they can't make a game without shoving boobs in the player's face to keep his attention.

Or maybe stop trying to push your personal view onto another culture and let them do their job.

"Pushing your personal views onto another culture" is a proud tradition here. You can't have a thread about a game where - shock and horror - women wear bathing suits or are shown being attractive at all without the usual suspects going apoplectic because the developers had the gall to not bow to Western puritanism by dressing the women as nuns or shoving men's cocks into the camera to gain points with #gaymers. The hilarity of it is that these people are catered to by the vast majority of media - nearly every Western game and a sizeable portion of the Japanese industry constantly churn out games with prominent, well-written, non-sexualised female characters and include mountains of fanservice focused on male characters (as of Street Fighter V, Resident Evil post-4 and recent Dragon Age games, this by far eclipses the attention paid to the girls) - but they still complain when a game has the tiniest portion of light-hearted fanservice focused on females for a change, despite being a product aimed towards a niche audience, and representing the tiniest fraction of Japan's game development, let alone the world.

Well, many Japanese people themselves are disgusted with otaku "culture", so there's that. *shrug*
Not that I'm saying everything about otaku culture is bad, but still. This game in particular seems pretty bad in this regard.

yeah fuck criticizing games for treating women as sex objects.

You're making blanket attacks on a culture you don't understand from an external position, and demanding it fit your own desires and beliefs. Why can't you just let this one unique and pure expression of Japanese design sensibility exist, without poisoning and diluting it to the point where it becomes indistinguishable from the hundreds of other dour, sexless Vita brawlers on the market? If something this tame triggers you, there are a myriad of other options to turn to for your fix of scowling anime guys punching each other.

You can also just say "but i want my game in which i can grab boobies." A game coming from a different country doesn't make it immune to criticism here.

EDIT: Wait, this is a joke post, isn't it?

I'd be more contempt to understand your perspective if you said "just let me have my titty game" instead of going through detailed posts of nonsense.

That being said, Uppers sounds super interesting. The art style alone sells me on it.

I know when I think of Japanese games I'm always like, man, there's just so many games these days focusing on male fanservice aimed at the female audience. It seems like every game these days just has ass shot after crotch shot, men posing proactively for the camera, highlighting their chiseled bodies and bulging packages. Where are my scantily clad anime tiddies? There's not enough scantily clad anime tiddies out there anymore.

Male and female fanservice of jiggly bits isn't so comparable. The boob stuff is closer to a guy having a thick collarbone and a broad chest, and guys lose their shirts in these games all the time. Junk isn't nearly that attractive, and I certainly wouldn't want to grab or motorboat it.

what if he mean: "bury your character's face in the opponent's chest" ?

I want to see how the "pervy" elements of this game play out -- if they're treated as actual fanservice, or played as satire.

The reason I say this is because this game appears to be a play on Japanese "furyou" or "delinquent" subculture, of which -- like it or not -- chauvinism and debauchery are often a part. The idea of fighting to impress a girl and then burying your face in her chest as a "reward" seems like such an over-the-top concept that I almost feel it HAS to be played for laughs, as a parody of furyou culture and ideals. I almost see it as a more extreme version of "Mekuri Master" -- a flash game by the creator of La-Mulana in which you're a badass street punk and your goal is... to flip as many skirts as possible for "inspiration."

It's a fine line, and definitely doesn't translate well into Western culture, but if it's played right and is a small enough part of the game, I'll give it a pass. Basically, play it for satire and make it an optional minigame or something -- like Gigolo Mode in Killer Is Dead -- and I don't see it as an issue.

I think the best thing to do right now is wait and see how the game turns out. Give it a chance to "prove itself" as more media is revealed.

I know now not to expect anything decent (as in, proper decency, not quality) from Takaki, except for IA/VT, which we're not getting.

I'm sure plenty of people here are disgusted by our murder simulators as well.
But still, the complaints are completely missing the context of basically everything like usual because sex is bad and shameful while ignoring that the fanservice is just as prominent in regards to the opposite sex. It's just that nobody makes angry articles about dudes getting whipped until they climax so that world doesn't exists and only women are "objectified".

My sentiments exactly. I'm willing to wait and see the cohesive package to see how everything works together before I pass judgment. I've been in the mood for a new brawler and Yakuza 5 still shows no signs of being out in the immediate future. If the core gameplay is solid enough, I'll look forward to importing this one.

Marvelous has been shoehorning this kind of stuff into nearly every single one of its recent releases, and ironically that doesn't appear to be helping them sell all that well. I'm not sure why they keep digging their heels in on this.

Oh well.

I've been an anime / manga fan long enough not to mind a bit of fan service. It was nice to see Japanese-produced works occasionally ask / explore the silly youthful innocence many were thinking anyway. The subtle / shock factor of it, even in the most serious of moments, was a kind of comedy / comfort you saw very rarely in US animated works, and often times, it wasn't as blatant as what'd you'd see in an R rated movie or such.

But the whole world keeps pushing for more and more extremity, and universally, I find it often annoying. There's an art to keeping things more teasing than blunt, universally appealing / intriguing rather than flat out hardcore niche-serving. This goes for violence, sexuality, or even the expression of cute, innocent, loving, or happy elements. When you push anything too far, it loses a lot of it's appeal, and goes from a pleasant element of the experience, to an overbearing, obnoxious facet that seems forced and desperate.

Easily, the jury is still out on what exactly will occur here. But it'd be nice to not see overt sexuality as an early selling point on a Japanese Vita game for once, truthfully speaking.

Hiroaki's art is always pretty awesome. I'm glad to see him involved with something again, as his 2k2UM artwork still remains a favorite of mine. I'd love to see more and more games try to adapt his style into gameplay graphics.

What percentage of the population of the technological world is, right this very minute, getting off to internet porn? What percentage will get off during the next 24 hours?

They're going to do so by staring at strangers half dressed, fully naked, getting off solo, having sex, having group sex, getting dominated, being submissive, wearing outfits, dancing, being tied up, being whipped, and on and on and on and on.

These people will seek out 'models' and acts that best represent their fetishes and personal interests - male, female, trans, straight, gay, black hair, blonde, race/ethnicity, short hair, long hair, flat, busty, packaged... whatever set of parts turns them on most. They will objectify the living daylights out of these complete strangers. We don't know where said models position on it is -- whether they're doing it out of gaining a sense of power, or whether they have no other options. And you know what? It's okay. And even masturbation wasn't okay, it's still clearly unstoppable.

But motorboating pixels! That's where we should take a stand, right?

Over the top brawler with awesome art... I think I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately, when you have a Vita, sacrifices occasionally must be made when it comes to shoehorned in fanservice :p Without this stuff, it really would be a dead system.

New infos:
Update 7:15 a.m.: Uppers is produced by Kenichiro Takaki, the producer of the Senran Kagura series, and features a scenario by Yukinori Kitajima and character design by Hiroaki.

Introduced in the magazine is a character named Ranma Kamishiro, a young man whose days are somewhat boring. He has no experience in the martial arts, but hereditarily has threatening physical ability and beast-like strength.

Players will battle against enemies in phantasmagorical fighting action. Attacks will automatically change based on the enemy’s position and posture. You can mercilessly attack enemies while they’re flying and falling, and unleash combos through repeated button hits.

Girls will cheer the guys on during their fights to heat them up. If you defeat enemies in front of the girls, you’ll power up. There is even a chest grab-and-bury-your-face element. (There’s the Takaki influence.)

Uppers will launch in Japan in spring 2016.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

I guess i could deal with that kind of fanservice if not invasive.

Literally "girls are watching: the game".

Or maybe stop trying to push your personal view onto another culture and let them do their job.

Look at the thread, everyone was hyped for the game until we knew about fanservice, it's not just me.
Like it or not fanservice reduces both the appeal/audience and the chances of a localization.

This and Gundam Extreme Vs Force are making me consider getting a Vita for real.

Fuck yeah, a beat 'em up from Marvelous with good art for a change. I hope we get this, Crows and that Kenka Bancho game. If not, it's okay, I'll just import them anyway.

I've changed my mind actually. Like Tom says, I can handle a bit of tongue-in-cheek stuff like this (i.e. the Neptunia games make me laugh from the fanservice).

Yeah. Everyone.

Or it might be a vocal minority. Hm.

Not really

Very rarely a fanservice heavy game sell big numbers(i can only think of Senran Kagura games ATM), so the vocal minority is actually those who buy fanservice games :p and yeah despite the good number of localized nsfw games a sfw game has still more chances to be localized unless it's license based or very bad.

I'm not against fanservice/moe/whatever games(i enjoyed akiba's strip, monster monpiece, neptunia, atelier etc) or their localization, but i would like to see more "mainstream"(let's say so) japanese games on vita.

I just don't see how this game would sell significantly more or have higher chances of coming over if they took out the boobs.

We don't even know what's hapening in this game yet either

You are right about this, but that's all we have and that we discuss, when something more will be revealed we'll discuss about that too.

About sales again look at the thread, fanservice will attract some people but for sure will turn off others.

Exactly. It's a trade-off. You can't please everyone.
If this game is actually good and a bit of boob grabbing turns you off from it.. whatever. It's their loss.
