Minecraft Creator Snatches Beverly Hills Megamansion From Beyoncé and Jay-Z For $70MM

At Notch, specifically? He was pretty generous with his employees. They probably won't have to worry about rent or how they'll afford clothes should they need some. So with him specifically, probably close to a 0.

You'll see in my initial post that I took more issue with attributing his success 100% to him and him alone.

Uhh, yeah. In 2012, Notch gave his dividends from Mojang ($3,000,000) to his employees. That was $120,000 each. If he did that today, even with their 43 current employees, they'd each receive about $70,000. So yeah, I think that rent and clothes are the least of their worries.

Notch is disgusting for buying that ridiculously expensive house. He should've used it on more important things like funding developers with creative new IPs, charity, development of Last Guardian, etc.

Jay-Z has 99 problems already, I'm sure Notch ain't one of them.

But he might have really liked this house.

Good for him. I cant imagine the costs to heat/cool/maintain/property tax the building. Those are the costs that will get you. I totally understand why he made such a purchase - if you have such a huge sum of money in your bank accounts you either pay the tax man or get tax credits from these purchases.

Good for him, loving his work. Some of you lot are miserable fuckers.

Property is an asset anyway, he hasn't just thrown that money down the drain.

And why should he have spent it on funding indie developers?? Where was his billionaire backer when he needed one? He made it on his own and it's up to him what he does with his money - stop judging him!!

He didn't run out of money, you know?

House is gorgeous. Minecraft is the best thing to happen to games in decades. Nothing but admiration for the dude.

It must feel amazing to outright buy a house like that and barely have it put a dent in your bank balance. I think I'd end up spending much more on the cars I'd fill the 'showroom' with. It must feel fucking nuts coming home to that place for the first few weeks / months. Just rolling up that drive and seeing it unfold in front of you. Dream stuff.

Dude I've got a picture of you right now hitting refresh on this page just fuming over how much money notch wasted on his house when he could be distributing amongst the poor.

I wonder what is the cost of living in Beverly Hills?
(especially in that mansion; monthly costs for basic amenities, maintenance, security, housekeep/maids, etc?)

Having a big pile of money isn't going to help, unless one also has a steady stream of income.

May be Notch just got it to just own a really expensive place temporarily, won't be surprised if he chooses to sell the mansion after some time.

Obscene amount of money for what's basically a porn set house. this guy has little taste, although I assume its more of an investment than an actual home to live in.

Maybe Jay-Z didn't hold a door open for him, and this is payback...

If you have a billion then getting an income stream shouldn't be too difficult. Running costs could be $10 million a year, but so what it is a drop in the ocean. He can afford it, hopefully for him having all this money doesn't become too much like running a large company and it's something he can enjoy doing whatever he wants with.

Wouldn't the interest he gets from 1.5 billion itself be classed as a steady income?

I'm pretty sure I'd donate a lot of it to causes that could help mankind. I don't need a megamansion to be happy, a nice house is perfectly fine.

But to each their own.

what if universes don't really work out in reality. People can claim they'd be humble and all that, and whenever they get money not share it.

Notch earned his money... spend on it whatever you please. Congrats!

Most people buy these places, then sell a few years later. It never seems to last. Places like this are just too big. Maybe he can start a little studio in there or something, haha.

I would assume he has a pretty good idea what he is going to do with the place. He seems to be slightly intelligent. :D

So crazy to think this all came from a guy who made a Java game.

I still stand by what I thought of Minecraft when I played it a couple of years ago. It's one of the best games anyone's done. It's the game I would have loved as a kid who liked playing with Lego or whatever.

I don't understand how anyone can hate on him? The man is successful and purchased a luxury property. What's wrong with that? People can do whatever they want with the money earned.

And I have to agree with it just because that's the way it is?

Why don't you create your own business or IP, instead of complaining? Notch treated his employees very well - better than majority of businesses do. He's the creator of the whole IP, so he deserves the most money from the cash out.

i guess 70Mil is a drop in the bucket for Mr. Notch

bonus: I have a friend who lives in one of the houses near this (and its a regular house not a mansion)- odd placement for a mansion:confirmed

Fair play to him for becoming such a financial success, but honestly, even if I was as rich as him I just would not spend that much money on a house. I'm a single bloke, why would I need 8 bedrooms and 15 fucking toilets?

I think he'll regret buying it eventually.

People envy him and it's why so many people are acting salty in this thread.

God forbid a dude who 5-6 years ago had nothing and now can buy a 70 milliion dollar house like it's nothing. How dare this greedy son of a bitch enjoy life with the money he earned and how dare he not give away his entire fortune to the less fortunate?! And to the people who stand on their soap boxes how many times have you volunteered around your city? Donated money? Is this just stuff you would do IF you were rich? It's easier to say then do.

And when did it suddenly fall on people who have money to solve people without moneys problem? Why it is that if someone comes into a fortune they are expected to just give their money away? Why does someone who came from nothing suddenly have to give people money because he made something of his life? If i suddenly won 500 million from the lottery i am not going to go give half of it to charity, i am going to buy a nice big house, invest and make sure that 20-30 years from now my nieces kids kid has money.

If you make a lot of money, you should buy a lot of awesome shit. Good for Notch. It's baller season. Don't be jealous.

He actually made something. He's not some Wall Street superstar who shuffles money around and somehow comes out a millionaire for doing absolutely nothing but scamming, cheating and manipulating.

I sure as hell would've bought it if I had a share of Mojang's $2.5b buyout to my name. I'd probably make space for genuine Tyrannosaurus/Triceratops skeletons in the front room too.

Seriously, though, how can people be so judgmental? Notch donates thousands to Humble Bundles and other charitable causes all the time, he's perfectly fine doing whatever he wants with his own, well-earned cash.

It's easy to to judge people like this, but wouldn't buying yourself a nice 10M home and doing something good with the other 50-60M make you feel so much better when your sitting around your house?

With that said, I've always felt people can do what they want with their money, and like mentioned it's not like he profited off of other peoples suffering.
