1) Kokoro Connect ; What starts out as a seemingly clichéd setup complete with central gimmick unfolds into a multifaceted drama that takes a deep and close look at all of its characters. The only thing stereotypical about the series is the fact that such moving and even tragic episodes befitting of the adult experience is so closely played out among high school friends. Not to mention the OST and ED songs for each arc are a perfect compliment to the mood and tone of the series.

2) PapaKiki ; Another anime with a deceivingly powerful premise. This time about the essences of friendship, life, love and familial bonds. Albeit the anime occasionally dials up the pandering to ensure BD sales meet target projections, it never spoils the experience, and those looking for a touching anime along the lines of Usagi Drop will find their share here moreso than fans of Kodomo no Jikan. Not to mention Hocchan's catchy electrosynthesized ED has more than occupied its fair share of time in my CD player/smartphone.

3) AnoNatsu ; A callback to the past days of anime that hits all the right nostalgic notes. This series blends the strength of modern animation with the staff that brought the Onegai series. A standard tale of summer romance told only in the way that the Onegai team could. Just capturing the style and coupling it with its old I've Style OP would have been enough for any old-school romance lover; having it connect to everything was pure icing on the cake. A glorious 3-layered cake.

4) Chu2Koi ; What began as another KyoAni otaku show turned into 2012's best show about growing up and moving on.

5) Campione! ; Shouen harem action at its pinnacle.

6) Accel World ; Reki Kawahara shounen plot with the better action, better plot , better OST, and 100% less Asuna.

7) Kids on the Slope ; The perfect fusion of jazz and animation and everyday drama.

8) Chihayafuru ; Much more than simply a show about karuta, and that's what makes it wonderful.

9) KoiChoco ; A anime that takes a strong look at the dark and dirty side of politics, marred only by its unnecessarily melodramatic ending.

10) K ; Stylish, experimental, colorful, strong soundtrack. The only thing truly missing is a plot.

Honorable Mentions: Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Hyouka

This doesn't make that much sense to me. Mathematically what difference does it make? People who vote more shows doesn't make their lists more or less important than people who vote one show. The aim is to find the anime of the year. So maybe everyone should just have ONE vote! :p

Now that would be a real list! No compromises.

I like you.

I really should start watching space brothers, but the backlog D:
Thanks. lol

And you know, Space Brothers is a show that probably works best in arcs anyway. If you just watch the arcs in 5ish episode chunks every couple of weeks (treat them as a mini series), you'd not only have a better experience, but it'd be more manageable than the daunting 40 episode count would otherwise have you believe.

Even though I don't considering it "top ten", if you enjoy space exploration on any level, it's worth the time. Or, just watch the live action movie if you can understand some Japanese.

Lol I didnt notice he posted that before.
I hate it as much as he does, except I did like silica and Lisbeth. Except the show saw fit to completely ignore them. So fuck that show.
Even on the level of waifuism, the show is terrible because of how it tries to manipulate an emotional response out of he viewer during the final arc. :p

Damn firehawk. Cold-blooded.
It had to be said!

Fuck Japan award[/U]: Sword Art Online. This is the worst show ever to have been produced by a culture. Take the solipsism of The Newsroom, the depravity of K-Town or any other reality show of that ilk, and the sad humanity exhibited exhibited in shows like Honey Boo Boo and you'd STILL get a show that is morally, ethically, and spiritually more justifiable than Sword Art Online. The bar has been set so low that I can even see merit in a show like OniAi. Fuck you SAO... just fuck you.

All I read is the sexual anger a human wishes they could unleash on SAO if it were a human. All this talk of morality is the rhetoric people who hunger for rage sex spew. Just put it as your number one, learn some stretching exercises and finish yourself off and everyone will be happy: A well-deserving show will win and you can break out of the rigid prison of the mind you're in.

Pretty much everyone in this thread has an anime character as their avatar. I had no idea Anime-gaf was so active!

1. Hunter X Hunter

The best scene in anime history.

It starts out a little slow, but picks up pretty well after that.

Now if only there was a GIF of 35s through 47s that video.

-edit-

Special thanks to Articalys for the amazing gif.

iZKiHnMmk0zKL.gif

2. Naruto SD

More entertaining than the main anime, and Guy rules.

Went back and edited my post since everyone was getting their knickers in a twist over it. For archive reasons and to help those late to the thread understand all the comments after my first post here's an archive of it.

1. Kill Me Baby

Up there as one of the finest comedy shows of all time. As a Brit you know I know what I'm talking about. Ronnie Corbett even said he wished he wrote the show.

2. AKB0048

A real inspiration during this time of economic difficulty. Like the Full Monty before it, it shows a group of downbeat citizens of a North English town (Lancaster to be precise) who have a dream to be the next big thing. Despite society being against such ideals they strive to achieve this and spread joy around the world. Brought hearts to my eyes.

3. Sword Art Online

A revolution in story telling. The concept it simple, what if you were trapped in a game where you could die. Stripped of all the harmless fun and now forced to battle for survival, the characters throughout the show struggle with harsh moral judgements and often have to question the ethics behind their decisions. Does one leave weaker players behind in order to escape faster or do you stay behind and accept this new life so your life in not danger from battle. Meanwhile you see snapshots of the real world and how people are coping with their loved ones being lost in a coma and the police force franticly hunting for the mastermind behind this devilish scheme.

4. Upotte!!

A real thought provoking show. It focuses of a group of friends at school and how their lives are changed when the local area becomes a war zone. The issue of child soldiers is a very serious one and I felt this show truly captured how horrific this life can be.

5. Lupin III: Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna

Everyone loves Lupin and it's great to see him still kicking around in 2012. May not appeal to those who are new to the series but for long term fans this is a real return to form.

6. Mirai Nikki

Award for one of the best protagonists of the year. Clever and confident, you really get to like this guy. His life is put in danger but he manages to keep his head up and get on with it. They also manage to strike a fine balance so he doesn't come off as cocky. Really hits the nail on the head.

7. Saki: Achiga-hen episode of side-A

A tournament show based on one of the most interesting sports in the world. Don't want to spoil it for you but the ending is worth it. Girls Und Panzer could learn a thing or two from this about not cutting a tournament short.

8. Nyaruko-san: Another Crawling Chaos

It's a comedy show that does admittedly relies a bit on references but unlike lesser shows like Gintama the references are clever and not in your face. The original jokes are the main focus and boy are they funny.

9. Psycho-Pass

Sci-Fi + thriller is a pretty common theme but for once you feel the writers understand the technology they are talking about. Also unlike a lot of sci fi thrillers that paint the world as a real morbid place where violent gore in the norm this delves into psyche of the average citizen under the watch of Big Brother.

10. Another

I'm not usually a fan of horror, but for once the characters felt intelligent and the mystery was captivating. Also as a bonus it was designed to scare you physiologically rather than relying on cheap thrills and gore. Rips the rule book in two.

10) K ; Stylish, experimental, colorful, strong soundtrack. The only thing truly missing is a plot.

Honorable Mentions: Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Hyouka

Someone else mentioned K, nice, it was one of this years surprises. good fandom.

You know, I totally forgot about Aquarion EVOL. No love for EVOL at all here.

I had Aquarion Evol up on first, but its plot got quite out there closer to the end, still one of the funnest anime of last year. Love Amata's va, Andy w Hol, and Kagura.

Also edited my list, failed to mention HxH.

What's with all the hate that SAO is getting? It's perfectly fine until they get into the second MMO. As for me:

1. Hunter X Hunter: this is shonen done right. I seriously like almost all the characters, and the fights are well done. The series really picked up once The Phantom Troupe got involved in the Yorknew City arc, but I also like the Heaven's Arena arc right behind it.

2. Accel World

3. SAO: Once again, the first part is much better than the second. It's also visual porn, as there are some nice environments, and also some nice fights thrown in here and there. Don't shoot me.

4. Girls und Panzar

5. Gintama': still makes me laugh to this day. This is excellent comedy.

6. JoJo

7. One Piece: Episode of Nami

8. Fate/Zero 2

9. K-ON!

10. Haven't seen any others thats from this year. Will come back to this,

Is it really that bad?

Look Anime-GAF, you can't title a thread "Batman, now with more wings" and have it be a bad show, that's just cruel. I've only watched the first episode so far though

Obviously Firehawk is tsundere for it and won't admit his true feelings. Why don't you make up for his shortfall and vote for it as your number one show. You've seen at least one episode so you qualify.

Yeah, it's horrible. It makes every single harem show ever made seem like high art by comparison. Imagine Genshiken and Welcome to the NHK without any self awareness and irony. Yuck.

Careful, firehawk12. Have you forgotten how the internet works? Perhaps in a normal conversation you'd be putting people off the show, but what you're actually doing it is selling it to people. You're actively encouraging people to see how terrible it really is!

1) Black Rock Shooter ; One of the best shows of the 2012. It had everything. Action, comedy, drama, suffering, elation and the best CG use one could hope for. Watching the suffering of young girls has never been this fun.
2) Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere II ; The follow up to the best show of 2011. If not for BRS it would be my first pick. It was funny, it was outrageous and it was a riot. I can't wait for part 3.
3) Chihayafuru ; I would never have imagined that a show about a "sport" as boring on paper (and who knows, maybe in reality as well) as Karuta could be this addicting. I also would never have imagined that a show about such a boring sport and that sold little would get a second season green-lit. Goes to show that gems can hide everywhere and that sometimes being hopeful pays off.
4) Kill Me Baby ; I had completely forgotten that this one was in 2012, which forces me to make a shuffle in my list. This too would be higher, if the first three positions weren't locked. It was one of the better, if not the better, comedy of the year. I loved every episode and every joke, plus the short cast of characters was funny and likable. I'll never get tired to see Sonya-chan kick the living shit out of Yasuna, Yasuna trying (and failing) to trick Sonya-chan and Agiri doing her thing. And let's not forget one of the best OP & ED of forever.
5) Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! ; Dekomori. That's all.
6) Ginga e Kickoff!! ; Finally a football show that is able to convey the feeling and excitement of playing the game.
7) Queen's Blade: Rebellion ; Nice, big, round tits everywhere, some delicious fighting action between women and Oda Non's character animated. One couldn't ask for much more out of a Queen's Blade show.
8) Psycho-Pass ; Probably in the minority about this (just like I'm probably the only one loving BRS TV so much) but this show was pretty entertaining, even with some flaws. Still, it had one of the best OP, with the right mix of visual and music for my taste (and some shots of sexy feet), a cute although pretty useless female lead (from which I was expecting much, much more) and an interesting mix of mystery & drama.
9) Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse ; The show had pacing problems, which is why it's so low on my list. Without those pacing issues it would be among the firsts, because even with a bit of a dubious start and low production values, it delivered the right amount of emotional strife, battles, love triangles, betrayal, politics. Now it only needs to have a new season to continue the story.
10) Bodacious Space Pirates ; If only a certain someone didn't ruin it with her atrocious voice, I'd put it higher. Too bad she's in there killing my ears. Still it deserves a mention!

Honorable mentions:
Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero ; Campione was supposed to be here (because of those wet kiss scenes that bordered on porn) but then this one had the more badass protagonist who overpowered everything that dared to face him. It makes me long for an Aiki anime adaption.
Campione ; Animated kisses have never been more arousing.
Sword Art Online ; Great implementation of how a next generation MMO should strive to be, impossible bullshit aside. Asuna would make for a great wife.
From The New World ; It has problems in regards to certain episodes but it's quite fascinating to watch, with an interesting setting and one of the better ideas for a mystery show: don't waste time on an OP, which leaves a bit more time for the actual show.
K ; I liked the music, I liked the character art, some of the action and even the silliness of the situation. I didn't like the ending much, but I give it points for doing something that isn't always done in anime when it comes to closing a story.

----------------

I was gonna put a couple movies in there, but then thought that I don't feel movies should be beside TV shows, so I'm simply going to give them an honorary mention:
HELLS is pretty great, despite something being a bit off from what I remember of the manga
A Letter To Momo has been a great movie despite some bad use of 3DCG here and there.

It turns Campione into high art? Well now I have to watch it...

Damn... It's too late!

NHK has that FF11 arc that is exactly like SAO. But NHK shits on people who plays games. :p

Firehawk's view is a bit more extreme than everyone else's. The consensus in anime gaf is it has a great concept, some very nice and well animated action, and an expansive and pretty world, all while having shoddy writing and a poorly developed cast with a Gary Stu lead.

If that sounds appealing to you, still watch it.

I can only think of 5 things I watched to completion (or close to) this year. I have very little time for simulcasts, so most of my anime viewing has been older stuff I'm finally getting around to (my partner and I blasted through the entire second season of K-On!! over Christmas, and we're about to finish Kimi ni Todoke this week. We started on the first). There's a lot of shows from this year I still plan on watching, but I'll likely do so once they (hopefully) get home disc releases.

1. Space Brothers ; This show is really something special. The distance between this and the next show on my list is enormous. As a listless guy who recently turned thirty slaving away at a job that's far from my dreams I completely connect with Mutta. The storytelling is fantastic. It's perfectly paced (yeah I even loved the 15 episodes in the sealed box or whatever), and the characters all have realistic motivations and interactions. I don't ever want this show to end. It's likely to end up somewhere in my top 3 favorite shows lf all time when all's said and done. Now we just need someone to license the manga.

2. Kids on the Slope ; Kaoru x Sentaro is my OTP. This show was really pretty and had some great moments. Unfortunately, it felt rushed and didn't have a terribly satisfying conclusion. Also it had the misfortune of starting when Space Bros did, so it's kind of lessened in my mind.

3. Girls und Panzer ; It's hilarious and charming. I was worried this would be gross Upotte!!-like pedobait, but it's really fantastic. I'm sad I don't get to see the end for months, but I look forward to it.

4. Listen to Me, Girls, I am Your Father! ; I felt pretty bad about watching this at first. The fanservice from the young girls is gross, as is the running joke with the pedo classmate. That being said, there was a lot of heart in this show. A lot more than I expected. I'm not sure I'd ever watch it again, but I enjoyed it once through.

5. Mysterious Girlfriend X ; It's only #5 since I haven't finished it. I've seen about half and find it very interesting. Excited to watch the rest.

I love world building in anime, but didn't find SAO to have very interesting settings. Kind of generic looking stuff. Terrible boss designs too.

Guys. Guilty Crown. Now that's bad, that's shit. That's the horrible abomination. SAO merely stuttered a bit in the second half, it's no where close to being a bad show. Let's not go hyperbole.
