New Bloodborne gameplay trailer

Do we know how "souls" like this game will be? From this trailer it seems like a more approachable hack and slash than the typical souls encounters we're used too.

This is one game where I couldn't care less if there's aliasing or low-res textures or not enough AO or whatnot. The art direction is just too good for me to care.

I agree that style and atmosphere can make a graphically underwhelming game look gorgeous. It helps that Bloodbourne already looks terrific.

At E3 we introduced Bloodborne’s evolved combat style, which requires more pro-active and offensive tactics. The weapons, like the transforming saw cleaver and blunderbuss shotgun, lend themselves to this different combat style, as does the quicker movement and dodging. There’s no more hiding behind a big shield waiting for a chance to strike. Enemies in Bloodborne are quicker and more aggressive as well, and at times you’ll be facing more enemies at once than in the past. There are situations where if you sit back and wait for an opening, you’ll get overwhelmed. At times, you have to be on the offensive. But this is not a hack-and-slash game. Rest assured, Bloodborne is still an action RPG at its core, and combat is still very much about strategy and tactics.

The new, more offensive combat actually goes much deeper, by way of our brand new Regain System, which rewards players for taking more risks and being more decisive and strategic. The Regain System allows players to recover health lost after taking damage by striking back at enemies within a short time period with a bladed weapon. Basically, The Regain system allows players a way to channel that negative energy they feel from taking a hit, and direct it back at the enemy to get revenge and steal back the health they lost.

The amount of health you can recover will be shown in yellow in the HP gauge, and it will get shorter over time if you hesitate to strike. You will still have to be smart and strategic with your strikes, as attacking indiscriminately could lead to taking more damage at the hands of the enemy. Now, the strategy and skill come into play in your offensive and counter-attack tactics, rather than waiting and timing defensive tactics just right.

Good. One weakness of the Souls games was that if you had patient defense, you could overcome almost anything without taking risk.

Upping the stakes and playing more risky combat sounds great. Sure you can hang back, but maybe that will invite being overwhelmed.

Hearing about this reminds me of when I saw the first RE5 trailer and was hoping for a more active offense/defense style of SURVIVAL, that we never got. Hopefully this game focuses on that, surviving while on the edge of death.

This trailer actually blew me away. Well beyond what I was expecting graphically and in terms of atmosphere, mood, general look and feel etc.

I just love the feathers flying on the giant crows. Just fucking perfect.

If only the anti-aliasing was better...

Not going to get a PS4 til this comes out, but this definitely looks pretty solid from what I've seen so far and doesn't look anywhere near as janky as DS2 did in the early Huntsman's Copse video.

Art direction looks phenomenal. Game play (from what little we have) looks to shake up what I am accustom to from the Souls series which is a good thing. Can't wait to hear more hands on impressions from attendees.

So is there any particular reason this is only on PS4?

Developed by SCE Japan Studio (along side FromSoftware) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. In an ideal world it wouldn't be exclusive, but it's made and funded in-house by Sony so you can't blame them.

My goodness

When he jams that blade onto the folded staff on his back to create the scythe. And the werewolf on the right says "Ok. You wanna play like that?" and starts side-stepping to flank in response. This is crazy good.

I'm gonna need a light-hearted game after playing through this though. lol

The atmosphere seems more oppressive than Tower of Latria's.

I feel like Bloodborne is one of the few next gen games which doesn't just seem like a really nice looking PS360 title. They seem to be using the new hardware to create a gorgeous world with fresh gameplay ideas. I guess RPGs are the genre that benefit the most from new hardware.

I rely to much on the shield while playing Souls game and so far to me this seems like a Soul game without shield/armor/magic. I like the way this is going.
