No Mafia III Review Copies Ahead of Launch

Get fucked, Hangar 13. Get proper fucked. Locking a PC game to 30fps in 2016 is absolutely unacceptable. What a load of incompetent trash.

I was looking forward to playing this this weekend, but not anymore. So absolutely pathetic.

They've already said they're planning to patch it

Thanks for the review man !
If the game was bug-free but with "special" AI, would you give it a "buy" ? Or the mission repetitiveness would still keep you off ?

VERY hard to judge. As bugs and issues impact the way the game actually feels. And those weren't the only problems. But it would have a much higher chance

Ya thats mine. Sorry lol I told people I would post it but I am sitting here watching the AI.

Some of the others who got it early are posting today as well later I think

Great review, as always. Seems like you really enjoy the game itself, but the barrage of technical problems really soured your experience. It's sad when this happens, when we want to love a game but it just won't let us.

If anyone else is still on the fence, this morning I remembered that Redbox has games, and they have Mafia 3. Might be worth paying the $3 and checking it out for a few hours.

The point is in 2016 or hell 2010 this shouldn't be an issue in the first place and that's only the start of the issues that need to be fixed with this game.
It's not the "2016" argument. It's the "be truthful and tell people ahead of time" argument. Launching at 30fps wasn't a great idea, but they could have mitigated the backlash by being clear a week or two ago rather than trying to slip it by people.

Especially if they're going to release 60fps trailers.

Thanks ya they hurt alot. I am not sure what I would have rated it without them as the way the game played and my experience would have changed a bit. But I sure would have liked the chance lol

^^ This. ^^

I lost some respect for the team when they chose not to be upfront. If they had said they were having issues with the PC release two weeks ago, I would have been far more forgiving.

Instead they went the other way, adopting an 'it is what it is' mentality with the truth having to be discovered by others which ultimately removed any sympathy I might've had for the team's release timeframe predicament.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."

Assuming these are full time reviewers : why is it taking them so long if this is their assignment? Games been out for a good while now, what is it they are doing?

you want them to have already beat a game that just came out today that didn't have review copies?

Taking so long? Game was released today... No review copies prior to launch, so you'll see reviews popping up next week. To make a decent review you need to play for a bit, preferably not all in one sitting and reflect on it. If someone publishes a review on launch day without a copy received earlier, that review will not be of good quality.

All right thanks you, awesome review by the way ! However, I was eager to hear you more about about the "gameplay loop" that seems to be the main chunk of the game.

I just got the game yesterday mid-day. Did you expect me to polish the entire thing off in a few hours? I need sleep and food occasionally. Frankly, I have no clue how ThisGenGaming has a review up unless they reviewed prior to finishing the critical path. (Which some do! It's a valid style.)

Damn. That's probably wait reviews got delayed.

Edit: the game never downloaded any patch when I installed it from the disc. There's no day one patch?

It may have been. As I said in the review I just went with my retail source I have had to use before. I was warned ahead of time things were changing but admittedly didn't think it would happen. Luckily I had it on standby and to be honest I will probably do so for most titles where ANYTHING seems to be strange.

It has a nice interconnected ring style of gameplay with side missions informing and adjusting the lesser boss missions as well as the main boss missions and the work you do adjusts a bit about how the other missions play out. Its not totally dynamic but it has enough flexibility to feel impactful to your character and gang growth. At least for awhile. And its not just like resource collection or some shit. Way way way deep in the game that changes even more and i think you will start hearing people talking about it...tomorrow probably. VERY cool stuff.

Also the form of the activities meet the fiction quite often. You dont say just get something randomly as often as you would in other games. Instead here, for example when bugging peoples phone systems, you start hearing the tapped phone-calls and getting warned of more missions. It is a small thing but it feel really good.

I would assume they and any others who got reviews up managed to get early copies.

I'm genuinely curious about something. I'm aware that the game has some issues but am I the only one who doesn't notice them when I'm playing? I've got about 6ish hours in and I've had the car won't start bug happen once, and a weird lighting thing when I was talking to an npc but other than that I haven't noticed anything. I don't know if it's because I'm so focused on what's going on or what. I'm playing on ps4 if that matters.

Just finished watching it, there are more PC specific issues than you noted but overall I think you hit a lot of the reasons why this is a wait for fix/sale title and not the instant buy I was personally hoping for.

Ya no harm in waiting. Its not MP so your losing nothing and gaining hopefully.

Performance and bugs will have some similarities between systems but also depending on how you play, even the direction your driving down a street, AI level, and even time of day can matter for lets say FPS. It also MIGHT be a bit of you not noticing or you could be one of the lucky ones. I always tell people NOT to fret. Just enjoy

Wow thanks man, since i started with all the negative comment about the repetitive gameplay loop, it's very nice to hear !

Oh I'm very much enjoying. I've always been a huge fan of mob stories (I literally watched part of Casino every morning before school for amonth because it was on Starz and back in the day they showed the same movie at the same time every day). I'm also a huge fan of documentaries so this game really is a conjoining of things I love. All that being said it's not perfect but for me the flaws aren't keeping me from having a blast and hating life right now because I'm having to work 24 of the next 36 hours!

Basically: Story is inconsistent, AI is too simplistic, redundant and lacking in originality, etc etc.

Glad I'm waiting for more impressions. Doesn't seem like there's much meat on the bone with this one, which was kind of the big fear all along.

It seems like a cool setting/story can only get you so far.

IGN posted their review-in-progress:

Even with these reservations, I’m excited about pressing forward with Mafia 3. The story and characters are fantastic, and I’m continually excited to reach the next major mission where Hangar’s creativity really shines. Check back early next week for either my final review or my continuing impressions, depending on how long Mafia 3 ends up being.

Time:

Well shame on me, because boy was I wrong. The writing in this thing, the voice acting, its Scorsese-like sense of characterization and incredibly vibrant pastiche of New Orleans circa the decade of discontent…they’re all superb. Yes, exaggerated at times in ways pulp narratives tend to be. But this is a game that’s not just winking obligingly at cultural matters then skirting them. It takes hard, harrowing turns into the dark the way serious stories told honestly should.

I'm waiting on the ACG review ^

If we agree on eurojank rpgs being enjoyable we will agree on most games.

Another one?

IGN posted their review-in-progress:

I was actually shocked they were as negative, or...blunt about some of the issues they are having. It showed a good clean look.
But it seems like the Story is one thing almost everyone agrees with

Yep I am as well. Just spent another 5 doing controller handoffs on our newest playthrough with friends. Good times. Only crashed 1 time.

I really enjoy this game, don't get me wrong, but I find the saddest thing about it is that there's so much in there that could have been done better and made this game truly special, a must by. The technical issues if ironed out, which I haven't experienced much of anything in my 6 hours or so, one time the car wouldn't start and one time it crashed (PS4), and if the repetitive mission structure of getting to the actual meaty story missions was fleshed out this could have been something special.

Ha - I had a car 'stall' constantly and never start in a story mission where I had to drive someone around. I had to exit it and then go back in. Almost felt like a feature but it was definitely a bug.

This game is so, so solid underneath everything but the technical issues - between stuff like that, the clipping animations and the glitched out rain effects/weather transitions, it clearly needed another 3 months of polish. 2K should have had more faith in their team and delayed it. For a first title from that Studio, it's real impressive.

Do we have a review thread yet? That ACG channel on YouTube gave it a
wait for a sale
score.

Good review, definitely waiting for a £20 sale now. The game looks really ugly with a few scenes that are capable of looking really good, like at night time where they were able to hide all the blur. That part in the review where he's driving down the long street during the day and can't see much further than 200 yards is crazy bad.
