Do you get to walk through any of that background of Order 1886 or is it all just a matte painting?

No, but you do in these segments. The game is obviously not nearly as large as RotTR, but there are some larger areas within in it, that do not stress the engine or lend to any frame drops. In addition to that, RotTR whilst admittedly gorgeous, definitely drops in visual fidelity most of the time a lot is on screen, notably with bigger draw distances or larger environments.

Also, I find that in RotTR, outside of cutscenes, when there's no muck on Lara's face (e.g. blood, mud etc), the character model can sometimes look quite bad in comparison.

Though in the right lighting and conditions, when you're not up too close and when her model has a bit more texture diversity going on, Lara's model can look impressive.

The attention to detail in The Order is incredible. It's just not all about it's great tech or animation, they literally looked at every nook and cranny of the game and detailed the shit out of it.

Best boots of all time right there.
That's some fine classic footwear.

The lack of photo mode in Until Dawn makes it tricky to get good pictures (that second shot literally flashes for less than a second during a kick-entry) but the modern footwear's very detailed.

Sharpen filters always look best in motion. I'm guessing you hate the toddyhancer mod? I can't decide if it looks incredible or awful ha.
Sharpen filters always look best removed.

The lighting's more advanced in Tomb Raider's cutscenes where CD drop the horizontal resolution.

Switch 1886 with The Witcher 3 and the list might make sense

No shit that they looked at every tiny detail, it was a fuckin corridor all the time with the occasional "LOOK AT THIS FUCKIN SUPER DETAILED APPLE, I MEAN STARE AT IT", try do that in a world as big and full of live like in TW3 and then we can talk
Hey man, Minecraft is even bigger than Witcher 3 AND you can even break apart EVERYTHING, even dig a hole down to the earth core! Witcher can't do that, of course it can look more detailed if it's just a tiny continent.

Try to do as much as Minecraft with those visuals then we can talk.
