Phil Spencer: Still have flagship games in development; "new IP critical"

So, in the past 2 weeks, MS...

- paid EA more money to exclusify another feature of PvZ :GW ( previously only Boss Mode)
- paid EA another stack of cash to officialise a Titanfall bundle
- greenlit Halo 3/4 ports, basically bringing practically the almost the entire numbered Halo over to XB1

And who knows what else.

The Machinima scandal, sure, but I don't think anyone really cares about that Tomb Raider stuff, calling it a scandal is a stretch.

Only if you don't understand exactly the type of customers Microsoft continues to lose at this stuff. Microsoft built two gens being the 'top tier' console that got the best multiplatform products, that drew in hardcore gamers partially off the appeal of those types of advantages.

The stuff like resolutiongate and the Tomb Raider story continue to feed the narrative that Microsoft seriously undercooked the console, and is providing a negative value to that very base. That very same base who is less likely to be impressed that they're being charged $100 more for the "benefit" of Kinect.

And without those hardcore gamers, it's an uphill battle for Microsoft to maintain the status they had during the 360 gen

I feel these leaks are too early for good press regarding NPD sales. This stuff will be forgotten when those numbers hit.

hyperbole is exaggerating stuff. The Machinima scandal and Tomb Raider scandal is real, the Machinama story in particular got them huge bad press everywhere. And IF January NPD is as bad as famousmortimer is implying, then what's the hyperbole? That would perfectly explain why Microsoft feels they need to get out ahead with these leaks now. They can't face an entire month straight of bad press again.
Well then you leak slow. Gears one week, Halo the next, a bundle the next, etc. You don't blow everything in one shot if you're trying to control messaging for an extended period of time, throughout an entire month up and thru NPD numbers being released (which is a few weeks off btw) At least I wouldnt.

Bought Gears of War IP. Canceled Black Tusk's title so they can work on Gears.

If you don't like hearing this stuff, blame Microsoft. They're the ones responsible.

funny how DF article actually just came out today and would have been the story if it wasn't for this leak.

Scandal is still the wrong word. It's just another bullet point in a story that we've been hearing for months.

The leaks do not change the forecast though, do they? Not a single leak today has me excited for the One this year. MS needs to announce new IP's not re-imagining/labeling of older ones.

I would be shocked if the NPD numbers were really all that wretched. I would imagine they will be roughly 75-80% of PS4's numbers. I cannot see them dropping the price of the console within a year of the launch without offering something for the early adopters.

well im almost 99% sure im buying that titanfall xbox

I find some of that hard to believe with titanfall right around the block.. one of if not the most highly anticipated game of the year.

Let's be fair though. Would you do a lot of the things Microsoft has done strategically with XBO? :p

Which is why they decided to return to the idea of the Titanfall SKU! They think that's their ace!

this shit was happening all gen for the x360 and ps3 with the ps3 with the worse versions, Ps3 sales did fine in the end. Why? Games and price drops.

Me neither, but go back into that locked thread and look how people reacted. One tacky Titanfall console and suddenly everybody's gotta have an XB1.

I personally feel that the Gears talk have been going on for longer than that, so I don't want to chalk that as a reactionary measure. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Phil Spencer out-of-nowhere decided to increase the purchase price... cause you know, "seal this deal. now."

I might believe that Shangheist was cancelled in the past 2 weeks so that they start work on Gears immediately though. :)

I'd agree, with my only thought being that maybe MS thinks they can get some small Jan/Feb boost if this info gets widespread and people start getting on an Xbone hype bandwagon. But even then, that's admittedly a weak theory.

Otherwise, I can only see it as an attempt to build some general good will and excitement toward the brand in general, and I'm really not sure what that's accomplishing at the moment.

What are we sure a titanfall sku was never planned? Shouldnt the controller had gave all sort of hints?

Potentially controlled leak, huh. I guess Fall/Holiday 2014 is filled with Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Quantum Break and Halo 2 Anniversary. That's a good slate going into the holidays.

Could the NPDs for Jan be really that bad? I guess I could see XB1 falling post launch with PS4 still having pent up demand and selling tons but I'm not sure that as a company strategy of leaking this stuff on a message board is the best way to get people excited...

"Everything he said was true." -mort
That's a direct quote, so yes he did. I find it hard to believe he would know stuff years in advance, Project Nagano, etc. It sounds more like he's just latching onto the coattails of this guy to up his cred. I know famous is legit, but there's a limit. /2cents
Just read it myself. Honestly I think his sources probably got the same info as our leaker. He was on vacation till today, so he couldn't catch up in time. Mort himself is no insider, but he really has good sources. Not unlikely MS opened the floodgates for a bit. I give Mort the benefit of the doubt on this one, even if he is coming in later.

Spencer confirmed that Gears production started on January 20th, IIRC.

Apparently it was a mock up they were floating around and shelved. They returned to the idea apparently after they started seeing rumblings about how bad their numbers look for January. I am not the source of this stuff, I'm just repeating what is being said, and trying to piece it into a coherent theory.

The theory that makes the most sense with all the divergent info we have is that this is controlled leak and the reason it's happening now is in response to many negative developments regarding the platform and potentially the NPD numbers for January. We'll have to wait to see if that's borne out or not, since I am not the source. But a leak of this magnitude does not happen randomly and out of the blue. Something made this happen.

The only thing hurting Microsoft is the price. It being less powerful then the PS4 has minimal effect on the majority of people in my opinion. If a gamer isn't interested in Tomb Raider then they'll likely never hear of the FPS differences between the platforms.

Exactly what I've been saying all along. If this were a controlled leak, it's the stupidest execution ever. It will just end up being yet another scandal that paints them in even more negative light. Any victory from this will be short lived.

No idea what to think of it all.

There's like 10 or so special edition controllers/headsets for every one special bundle.

It's not like mort to explicit deny a bundle's existence. ( he flat out said nope ) I may be talking out my ass here, but he sounded like as of 2 weeks ago, there was literally no plans for it.

Maybe it's not just NPD but WW sales that are bad. I could see the X1 dropping like a stone everywhere outside the US

Quick version?

The la-le-lu-le-lo set up CBOAT and the la-le-lu-le-lo set up their own insider in Gaf to do a controlled leak for one reason or another.

Agree, really not sure what the intention is either. The announcements of a Titanfall XBO console, a future white model with a bigger HDD, etc., may sway people to wait even longer before purchasing to cover up for poor NPD sales and bad press. As you say, maybe it's to generate good will by being more transparent and closer to its consumers in this now fast lived internet world, where everything is more open now but who knows.

Where are you getting this from?

mortimer posted it, that it's no coincidence these things are happening now. He said it's a combo of the bad week of news and upcoming seriously bad Jan NPD numbers that made the leaks happen the way they did.

I trust mortimer, so I trust his perspective on this.

Not the January NPD stuff, the scrapped Titanfall bundle. Is this just your speculation? You're phrasing it like it's more than that.

Well... Microsoft hasn't announced the Xbox One hitting 4 million yet, or any milestone. Thing was at 3.1 million back in December.

Xbox One probably died hard in January's NPD. Probabaly only sold 100,000 at best.

The only thing hurting Microsoft is the price. It being less powerful then the PS4 has minimal effect on the majority of people in my opinion.

Well, it is both actually. It would be one thing if the One was slightly less powerful and the same price, but the fact that it is less powerful and more expensive really hurts. They still have not sold Kinect, nor have the really attempted to do so. As a gamer it is really important to me to have Nintendo/MS/Sony in the game, more competition is only better for us.

Remastering Halo does not sell a system for me, nor does Forza Horizon 2. I want new IP's and SKU without the Kinect or a justification for forcing me to purchase it.

It would be lulzworthy if this 'leak' actually ends up damaging sales further because of "wait for white/cheaper SKU!"

MS has reacted to stuff poorly before.

I hate you guys. You can't wait to start the fire until I'm home? Oh no, you gotta do it while I'm away and leave me clueless as to what happened, especially the journalists going after CBoaT part? I can guess who would lead that hunt though!

That's his thoughts but not necessarily the reason. Mortimer has always been vocal on his opinions.

no it's not my speculation.

You'll have to ask him whether it's his opinion or whether he heard this is the case, I can't say. All I can say is it does make sense to me given my experience here and the magnitude of these leaks, and the timing.

I don't think I understand the logic of leaking things so far in advance. Crackdown 3 sounds cool, but 2016 is a long ways off. If this really has to do with Jabnuary sales and bad press because of multiplatform gaps, this type of leak really isn't going to change anything.

Not if they drop another megaton stating

"Due to all the positive results, we are happy to announce that the xbox one would come out this March in an all white colorway"

or something along this line.. the sales would be staggering
