PoliGAF 2017 |OT5| The Man In the High Chair

Of all the horrible things Trump has done, I'm finding it hard to think of one worse than responding to a terrorist attack with dog whistles. We are long past the point of there being any question what kind of person he is.

It would not pass the 1st amendment check.

But it is possible to outlaw confederate displays and speech, much like how Germany dealt with their horrid past. Relegate it to textbooks and nothing more.

Slate had this thought a few years ago:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slat...y_historic_symbols_should_we_do_that_too.html

Codifying it as an amendment would be the way to go about it, being fairly explicit in its definition and making it VERY difficult to change.

The courts would strike this down without a constitutional amendment that will never happen. Government censorship here is the wrong approach because it's not a feasible one.

How is the media reacting to Trump's speech? Tell me they're not calling him presidential...

Pretty sure this many sides speech is going to be remembered long after Trump is gone.

Yeah, the one thing people remember about Presidents is what they say. This was Trump's chance and he blew it in a way that only Trump can do.

People say that Trump never really had to deal with a disaster like a natural or economic one. This is a prelude to how he will deal with one.

I also think this is one of those times that he will completely lose some potential support, like what happened to Obama with Trayvon Martain and some White Americans.

I'm in such shock on how poorly Trump handled this that I'm not even angry. Just drawing a blank beyond "BOTH SIDES, BITCHES!" Up to the media in the next few days to keep calling this out for what it is.

There are speed bumps on streets that cross that pedestrian mall... probably stopped the car from going even faster down the hill.

Hard to say he handled it "poorly" when this was calculated to make sure the Nazis knew Trump had their backs.

Its a calculated way to make your 35% base happy, but he needs more than 35% to win in 2020, and even if he did condemn them that 35% isnt going anywhere.

There's a reason why Paul Ryan and even Mike Huckabee condemned this rally, they want to keep up the charade so people want get motivated to register to vote and kick them out of office. Trump isnt intelligent enough to see the long game, and Bannon is too racist to care.

Mr. President - we must call evil by its name. These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism.

Better than nothing, too respectful though

We've seen his play-to-the-base strategy over the past six months and he's now at terrible numbers, including slipping numbers with that base. At a certain point I think you have to conclude this isn't a winning strategy. So playing to the base can still be wildly mishandling stuff.

Unless i missed it, i dont think anyone in the white house has acknowledged the terrorist attack yet.
I don't think any cops or federal agencies have called it a terrorist attack yet either, so at best you could say this is coincidentally the one time Trump decided to wait for official confirmation before declaring some tragedy to be an act of terror.

Even 35% is too high of a number for people sympathetic to Nazis murdering people.

Nice subtweet by an R - should have brave enough not to subtweet it, though.

White supremacists, Neo-Nazis and anti-Semites are the antithesis of our American values. There are no other "sides" to hatred and bigotry.

I'm sort of down with the idea of everyone registering as a republican and voting for whichever one is least like a nazi and just letting the democratic side sort itself out so maybe we don't head into 2020 wth a coin flip odds of the insanity continuing any further than it already has

Has Steve KKKing made a statement yet?

FAKE NEWS NETWORKS focusing on VA, Fox chose to run a story about Trump attacking McConnell.

A republican actually saying the words "supremacist" and "terrorist" in the context of a white person is a huge step.

Very important for the nation to hear @potus describe events in #Charlottesville for what they are, a terror attack by #whitesupremacists

What " WhiteNatjonalist" are doing in Charlottesville is homegrown terrorism that can't be tolerated anymore that what Any extremist does

They're not shy about calling it out.

You're aware that "nazi" is an acronym for national socialist workers party, right?

Apparently I was not. Pretty weird in the current climate of what socialism is associated with that they've stuck with it.

OK, so pol is already trying to dox the driver of the car and found someone with the same license plate but very clearly from another state and not the guy, but he's anti-Trump so they are just running with it.
