Yeah but realistically what can Sony put in a PS5 that would make it truly a next gen machine? They will have to R&D next year and have the SoC done by the end of 2018 to be ready to launch the device in 2019 at a reasonable price. It makes so much more sense to wait a few years so they can truly make it a next gen machine.
This is a silly argument. There are CPU/GPU architectures coming out
right now that blow the current PS4P/Scorpio completely out of the water that won't break backwards compatibility like Cell did with the PS3.
In two years? We'll have progressed even further and prices will have stabilized with even newer architectures entering the market. It's a never ending cycle.
And ofcouse, you could wait 10+ years and shoot even higher, but then you'd be better off never releasing another iteration of the Playstation or Xbox ever again. Designing a console is always about hitting a moving target.
But there is zero doubt that a SoC of a late-2019 machine will blow everything from the current generation away. And that's just common sense.
Any new SOC created for a console writhiin 2-3 years would only result in a system that's about 2-3 times more powerful than Scorpio if we're lucky. If they wait tilll 2021 or later the jump should be good for the traditional 5-8 times more powerful
Lol, are we genuinely marking generations by their power multiplier now?
