The year does not consist of 3 weeks. Vita is about to reach 4 million in Japan. It doesn't look like Wii U ever will. And PS4 has outsold Wii U 2:1 this year.

NX is the only upcoming platform they've publicly announced.

I agree, but your title is still false, this is no confirmation, is just a vague quip that can be interpreted this way if you tie the dots together and that even then still leaves room for doubt.
At the investers meetings, Iwata has discussed their challenges in porting console games to handhelds and vice versa, and how they want a unified operating system starting with NX. It is speculation, but not baseless. They don't want to make "Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS" with two major teams when they could simply use one for "Super Smash Bros for NX" and toggle on graphics effects and other settings to make it run on both.

I haven't bought a Nintendo console at launch ever (by the time I became old enough to have my own steady income, it was the Gamecube era) and I have been disappointed in every Nintendo console from the Gamecube on.

The time frame that these consoles are on is long? Who told you to release the Wii U in 2012 with few games lined up?
Also, that's even worse that with more varied sales worldwide such as in Europe and Japan that you're getting outsold by Microsoft which is pretty much US/CAN/UK/Australia.

It's not going to happen, because Nintendo is never going to risk having their only platform being a WiiU level of sales failure.

I think by "unified platform" he just means that there will be both a console and a handheld version. In theory the console NX could fail while the portable NX sells gangbusters, meaning they'd still have a 3DS-like device to fall back on.

I'm not actually claiming that, I'm just stating that "the Wii U has sold more than the PlayStation 4" is NOT a false statement. No I don't think that will last forever, but if you use a strong word like "bullshit," expect to be called out when you're picking your own measurements.

Because Iwata specifically addressed wanting them to share the same operating system and complained about the challenges of porting games back and forth between consoles and handhelds? I don't see it as some nonsense rumor, there's substance to it. That doesn't mean every console game will work on the handheld, but the reverse will likely be true.

Well, so little is known about the NX it's sort of a non-issue. Perhaps the NX is separate - what we know is that a new console is in the works, a thing called NX is in the works, and Nintendo has partnered with Dena. There could be crossover there
NX is probably the home console, as well as the handheld, and any other future hardware they make.
That's why no one thinks it's just a home console.

"It's actually doing better" is a pretty clear and wrong statement. It's actually doing worse than the Playstation 4 and Vita and even the lifetime performance is behind the two other hardware plattforms.

Nintendo had an "upward tick" the past couple of years. More constant and frequent high quality first party titles, some price drops, etc. meant that they were turning it around.
Then this E3 came and I don't know what the fuck happened to Nintendo. It's like we're back to looking at their 2010 selves, just doing jack shit and not giving a fuck about covering anything that might be intriguing. Spin offs out the ass. The first real look at star fox was underwhelming. Metroid fans get slapped in the face. Turning around and treating Mario Maker as a AAA manor release. And just the general slap in the face that Nintendo has, in fact, abandoned the console after 2.5 years.
It came out of nowhere. It's like Splatoon came out and they COMPLETELY ran out of steam. Many of us are getting whiplash.
