Rumour: Game company kidnapped dev's sister to stop them from working with Nintendo

The only companies that have been able to do business while staying clean are probably Nintendo and Namco.

I strongly doubt this, what with Nintendo running Love Hotels at some point after all.

I don't know if I could believe this. I mean shit, this is the video game industry.
The person claims that in Japan in that era the video game industry was considered similar to the porn and gambling industries - video games promoted spending time on self-entertainment rather than being productive, so the games industry in Japan was the kind of environment you would find gangsters.

It was an inside job.

didn't Nintendo have a guy killed before? or was that just a urban legend?

The "rumour" (incredibly daft story) is that Yamauchi had Gunpei Yokoi killed for going off and making the Wonderswan. Of course, that's pretty disrespectful a thing to consider.

Yamauchi having links to organised crime wouldn't surprise me, but this thing is just sensationalist bullshit

Was expecting some sort of trolling or whining thread... wasn't expecting this.

Worst thing is, can definitely believe it all.

Today's console wars look ultra tame in comparison ;)

Japanese bubble economy corporate culture was cutthroat as heck.

Developers weren't even credited in games to prevent poaching.

Konami had ties with gangsters. Has to be Konami ?

not to mention how big they are in the Pachinko business (huge ties again to Yakuza that business right there back then!)
......I could easily label them as the ones.

Even though.....they didn't enter the market till 2006 lol

I strongly doubt this, what with Nintendo running Love Hotels at some point after all.

Not only that, they were notorious assholes when it came to preventing developers and publishers from making games for Sega consoles.

No way Nintendo was "clean" back then.

This particular story, if true, is most likely Sega though.

Could be real tho we know tons of sketchy ass game companies around. Probably isn't but still. Don't most large game companies in Japan have ties to organized crime?

Sammy (the company that owns Sega) is one of the largest pachinko companies in Japan.

I heard someone offhandedly mention once that the fact that the Yakuza series began shortly after Sammy bought Sega wasn't a coincidence.
In my mind the Japanese version of Christopher moltosanti made the order.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Damn son !

That bit about smashing an arcade cabinet in front of their offices to call them out is b.a.d.a.s.s.

In Japan the older gaming companies are, higher the chances they had some relationship with the crime syndicate because that was one of their primary source of income.
I'd argue that there are zero corporation with totally clean record if they existed from 80s or earlier.

Agreed, seeing people still trying to paint Nintendo as saints is cringeworthy.

Of course Nintendo didn't need to get in bed with the underworld. Have you seen what they were like in under Yamauchi? Nintendo were their own damned Yakuza!

Am I the only one who wants to know what the hell happened with the dev's sister instead of knowing who did it?

Was she released after the arcade dropping?

20 years ago? Probably SEGA. Gotta secure those saturn games

Why not just say it is Sega?

It was one of their game machines. I dropped it in front of their offices, smashed it

How many Japanese game companies had "game machines"? Hudson Soft and NEC?? We know it is not Nintendo. I don't think we need to speculate too much.

Does anybody think this could be Sony? They're a Japanese company too, after all. And this story happened about twenty years ago around the time the PlayStation came out......

Most likely not, but you never know.

Sony were not a big games company back in 1995, nor were they invested in the arcade business.
