Microsoft is launching the XB1 in China and over a dozen new key markets soon. The 2:1 ratio will vanish relatively quickly.

Sony really let loose at gamescom, showing so many games! It is not the sheer volume, but how Sony snapped up all those developers. It only means they are still working hard to make PS4 the games console. And i thought they would turn a little complacent after PS4 successful launch.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, PS4 is the fastest console to reach 10m, right?

Congratulations to everyone at SCEI and SCE Worldwide Studios.

Honestly I was shocked by the number of games they showed. I was expecting it to be a 80% or more rehash of E3 but damn.

haha

It's a pretty accurate statement.

Will it be as dead, or more dead than Titanfall?

TF is hard to say. The sequel might have a shot but I don't see it ever being the "next COD" like Respawn wanted. Shackling it to X1 killed it's chances, and now Destiny will eat their lunch.

10 million is very impressive for a console with no games worth playing yet. I'm still holding on to my PS3 as all the games I want will have a version for it. The only thing that intrigues me about PS4 at the moment is the Morpheus virtual reality device, which is far from release anyways... :-s

Did we ever get "Sold to consumer" updates on Wii and PS2 console sales?

Otherwise I'm wondering the next time we'll be able to make a like for like comparison

At this rate Sony's not going to unshackle PS4 and PS3 shipments until late 2015 :\

PS4 should sell at least 3M WW this holiday season [that seems low to me, pessimistic even] and should stay ahead of the Wii and PS2 I think which is surprising

I don't think that ended up the big problem. The big problem was that it lacked so much content compared to the other AAA shooters. No proper campaign, thin multiplayer, no co-op of any kind.

Twitch streamers were all about Titanfall for about 2 weeks. By then they had blow through all of the real content in the game. Then they were back to Ghosts, even though many of them publicly state they hate the game. Ghosts just has more meat to it.

Stunning number. Well done Sony! Rime, Wild and Alienation look awesome! Think we can call it now, the generations trajectory is set for the foreseeable future.

Worldwide, yes. But Microsoft easily won North America, and I think that early lead had a lot to do with it.

So how can you then say that the 360 "won" the generation? Because they came close to the successor of the PS2? Or was Mattrick's statement just about winning in North America?

The Wii probably got there faster looking at that chart. They were at ~9.27m 1.5 months earlier than the PS4 got to 10m and were shipping over 1m per month.

Wasn't the Wii basically sold out everywhere? I got mine over a year after launch and I believe they were still not abundant at that time.

Expected, but still amazing (see comparison Aquamarine made with Wii shipments).

I think 20 million by the end of the year is crazy, so I'm guessing for about 17-18 million.

Anyway, Sony, give us a press release with software sales as well, pls.

PS4 don't need no Japan. WEST(ern) SIDEEEEEE

The western hemisphere is the dancinest hemisphere!

Indeed, it's more impressive if you consider PS4 is comatose in Japan:

Wii shipments by June 30 2007:
Japan: 2.95 million
Outside Japan: 6.32 million

PS4 sales to consumers by August 12(?) 2014:
Japan: 0.65 million
Outside Japan: over 9.35 million

Wii shipments by September 30 2007:
Japan: 3.67 million
Outside Japan: 9.5 million

PS4 haz no gaemz

I believe PS4 will sell 14m by year end. If the word of mouth gets big enough with games like Destiny then there could easily be some brief holiday period shortages as well.

when did I say the was not insurmountable? I'm saying the 2:1 advantage isn't insurmountable.

That means if XB1 gets to 40 million, then Sony *has* to be at 80 million. It's far from crazy to think such a ratio won't hold. Maybe I will be wrong but don't act like it's ludicrous to say so.

The question though is what conceivable thing could Microsoft do to turn around current trends. Their hardware specs are set in stone. It looks like the PS4's components will drop in price faster than the XB1's so unless Microsoft wants to take a bath, they won't be able to undercut the price. Outside of North America and the UK, PlayStation has been the dominant platform even when the 360 was in its heyday.

Games take 2-3 years to make so even if Microsoft makes a huge investment in development it'll be many years before it's effects are felt. There simply isn't a lot Microsoft can do to change its current fate except perhaps buying timed exclusives from third party developers in an attempt to spike sales around the holidays when a good percentage of consoles are sold. The problem is that is a bandaid at best.

And the Japanese devs STILL won't be able to cash in on that userbase because they're too busy catering to a Japanese audience that wants nothing but mobile crap.

Something tells me the mobile user base is larger than the 10 million PS4 userbase.
And that games are cheaper to develop for it.

It was heavily sold out for like a year and a half I believe but as I don't know what the Wii would've sold if it wasn't I can't compare it to that point can I?

I certainly think PS4 will cross streams with Wii at some point in time just surprised that it hasn't seemed to happen yet

I feel kind of bad for Crystal Dynamics now. They've been sold up the river. I hope the series isn't killed by MS's desperation.

I actually don't get it... How exactly did they sell 10m already? Sales in the US are about 1m in the past 4 months, so did the rest of the world buy 2m PS4s in the past 4 months? The PS4 is basically a no-show in Japan anyhow, so it's interesting if so.

Does anybody know if the X1 sales in NA and UK are at least more or less steady or have they started to drop off even in those territories? Because at least in North America the X1 ltd numbers don't look too bad on their own, or do they?

Congrats, Sony.

I'm expecting more money hats from MS after this news. Gonna have to buy their way out of the deficit they're in.

There is a decent chance they already have. They were at 9.27m at 7m 12d and 13.17m at 10m 12d. If they shipped steadily over that quarter they would be over 11m at the same point the PS4 is at now.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, analysis about these numbers

USA LTD up to June (NPD)- 3,600,000
Japan LTD up to August 3rd, 2014 (Media Create)- 653,377

Now, theory: PS4 sold another 250,000 units in US in July (given the historical June-to-July transitions and PS4 performance in June, this should be an optimistic scenario), so US LTD up to July's NPD tracking period (end is on August 2nd, 2014) would be 3,850,000.

This brings the US + Japan most recent total up to 4,503,377

This means that, in the rest of the world, PS4 sold around 5,500,000 since it's 10 millions+ sold to customers. Probably a little more, since the US number is an optimistic estimate. So, ROTW = US x 1.5. From what I remember, Europe has certainly been a better market for Sony than US, but not that better, and not with a console doing well like PS4. So, the only reasonable explanation is that all the countries outside US, mainland Europe and Europe itself are giving a good contribution to the console's numbers, since it's impossible that Europe alone contributed for 5,500,000 units.

EDIT: Just forgot...congrats, Sony!
