Sony Gamescom: PS4 install base exceeded 10 million units sold through globally.

I actually don't get it... How exactly did they sell 10m already? Sales in the US are about 1m in the past 4 months, so did the rest of the world buy 2m PS4s in the past 4 months? The PS4 is basically a no-show in Japan anyhow, so it's interesting if so.

It would appear to me that the PS4 has started to sell quite a bit better in the ROTW compared to the US than earlier in 2014 based on this new data point. I guess it's not too surprising considering supply issues lasted longer in countries like Germany and such

There is a decent chance they already have. They were at 9.27m at 7m 12d and 13.17m at 10m 12d. If they shipped steadily over that quarter they would be over 11m at the same point the PS4 is at now.

Right so Wii shipments at the same point would be around 11M by your projection, PS4 sales to consumers is at 10M what are PS4 shipments then?

10 million is very impressive for a console with no games worth playing yet. I'm still holding on to my PS3 as all the games I want will have a version for it. The only thing that intrigues me about PS4 at the moment is the Morpheus virtual reality device, which is far from release anyways... :-s

I knew this kind of crap would come. As if there's a better platform with games other than maybe WiiU's year long established lineup. I don't get what some of you like if you can't see how PS4 is starting to really outpace the competition in games.

It's selling extremely well in mainland Europe.

Microsoft is launching the XB1 in China and over a dozen new key markets soon. The 2:1 ratio will vanish relatively quickly.

And smartly they've been stockpiling consoles in a massive warehouse in order to properly supply those 2nd tier markets.

MS is so smart.

Oh, my bad, I thought we were still talking about sell through. My argument was that since the Wii was selling out within days of shipments arriving, that since they shipped 11m+ in the same time frame the install base has already crossed streams.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
It's selling extremely well in mainland Europe.

It's probably more all the countries outside US and mainland Europe + UK that are making the difference, dat launch in 50+ countries.

In the sense: it's certainly selling well in Europe, but I don't find reasonable that it sold around 1.5x compared to US in Europe alone (see my earlier post with all the extrapolations). So, there is a contribution from all the other countries where it launched.

I believe PS4 will sell 14m by year end. If the word of mouth gets big enough with games like Destiny then there could easily be some brief holiday period shortages as well.

PS3 used to ship around 6.5 million on holiday quarters alone sooooo PS4 is going to sell a lot more than 14 million by the years end. Shipped numbers will be probably over 20 million after this year and maybe even sold trough numbers considering insane holiday lineup.

Any chance we could get handheld comparisons? Specifically GBA, DS, PSP & 3DS?

Agreed. This "no games" argument is crap and getting old.

I mean if there isn't at least ONE game of interest out on PS4 then you probably shouldn't be into gaming period.

That is too funny, i wish i had the skills to add an X1 into that gif.

holding a 2:1 advantage after one year is doable. maybe even after 18 months. But to do so over the course of the entire generation when the other console is building the kind of momentum the XB1 has these past few months? It's not sustainable.

what momentum would you be referring to?

that tag suits you.

Congrats to Sony, but I'm honestly kind of disappointed that the PS4 alone is selling so well. It still seems to me that while it's a fairly well thought-out console, it's nothing really special or unique about it. It's just very safe, which makes sense for Sony after the PS3. The 360 brought online interactions forward in a huge way, the Wii introduced a new control mechanism that caught on fire, etc. The PS4 is basically the market embracing "just do the same stuff as always + graphics/power!" I realize that both Nintendo & Microsoft completely fell flat on their face out of the gate, but at least they were trying to push the market forward in some way, even if both approaches were fairly misguided. I honestly feel like their mistakes is probably a huge contributor to PS4 sales. I'm happy that there's a good bit of demand for traditional games in the ROTW though.'

Worldwide. Yes, but I am not sure if it ever outsold in NA except for the GTAV month.

I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure that's never been proven. The last announcements had the 360 still ahead of the PS3 by a bit. They are probably pretty close though.

Agreed. This "no games" argument is crap and getting old.

That's really narrow-minded you know. If you're interesting in platformers, I'm sure you'd have a Wii U or something for example.

I'm expecting more money hats from MS after this news. Gonna have to buy their way out of the deficit they're in.

You can't moneyhat games when you're getting murdered in sales. Spencer even said not to expect too many more big 3rd party exclusives. Essentially, the sales gap makes moneyhats unsustainable and they blew their load on Tomb Raider to fight off Uncharted next Christmas. Too bad for them the sales numbers are going to be fucking grisly by then.

I'm happy as fuck that it's selling like hotcakes, and it didn't even need a gimmick to do it. It just plays games and plays them well.

The strategic momentum starting with all the 180's since before Spencer took over and ending with a powerful 2014 holiday season for the Xbox brand.

If you really want something new then wait for Morpheus.

I'm sure it'll be fine this generation, but something will need to move the industry forward or it'll shrink (which I still think will happen this generation).

Fuck gimmicks.

If you really want something new then wait for Morpheus.

XBL/A was a gimmick? Having proper 3D Graphics (N64) was a gimmick? Please...

Not surprising that every article about this with comments is filled with 'lol ps4 no gamez' stuff. It seems to be the standard spin from the other camp.

Destiny,GTA5 ,New COD , Black Friday & Christmas are coming PS4 will be close to 17 million by the end of the year.

PS4 sold around 3 million in the last quarter and this quarter ( Jul , Aug ,Sept) should at least sell as much as the last quarter taking it to about 12 million & Oct,Nov & Dec will be even bigger at least 5 million sold in that quarter.

Ah yes, China, the place where you can already get a XB1 extremely easily at half of the official Chinese price, and you get a region free version of the console instead of the extremely region locked one? Yeah, sales there will be through the roof!

Microsoft: Tomb Raider exclusive.

Sony: 10 million sold.

Jeff Gerstmann: At some point you don't need Tomb Raider.

I really hope Tomb Raider comes to PS4, or PC at least.

Apart from Destiny how is that different than any other year?... GTA V is an up-port. It'll sell well, but don't expect that (over Destiny) to push consoles... Doubtful imo.

Further proof that CD (among others) probably hitched their wagon to the wrong horse, even if it is timed exclusivity.
