Tales of Berseria Import Thread

It's strange that they use the skit presentation for story stuff pretty frequently so far.

I have to say, I'm pretty tired of the sickly younger sibling and overprotective older sibling trope.

hah shit I forgot about those, which I guess says a lot about the quality of writing in them. Dude's idea of drama is tacky as all get out.

Horribly tacky. It's why I'm puzzled whenever anyone tries to argue that Xillia 2's story is better than the first game's. The cheap melodrama and frequent
character deaths
made me feel like the storytelling was a 14 year old screaming at me, "Isn't my story so cool?!" Didn't help that Ludger checks off all of the boxes for a textbook Mary Sue. If I wanted crap like that, I'd go to a fanfiction archive, yeesh.

I don't feel anything when
any of the characters died
beacuse they are too under developed for me to care. =( The only character that I somewhat care about is Rose but she is surrounded by boring people.

I'm... not a fan of Rose, tbh. But I'd rather not go into why here. I've made one tl;dr post already.

Playing on second and hard, didn't dare EVIL yet (got this mode from mini boss).

+ Field details are great, didn't see big and complex dungeon yet (at least they are not linear)
+ Characters are okay~; MC not emo (and can change shitty cloth to normal cloth), adorable kid not pedo's bait, lovable bitch (first I hate her at first sight, but...), handsome carefree guy, extremely handsome pirate guy, the waifu. Villains have punch-able face and attitude.
+ Many deaths early in main story again (Dejavu Xillia 2), bloody too.
+ Fighting mechanic may not be for everyone, but it's perfect for button spammer like me. Gonna X X X R2 X X X L2 all day! Balance and challenge are good.
+ Skill, Equipment, upgrade system are good.
+ Musics are above "Lazy Sakuraba's" standard (better then his recent Tales and SO). VAs're great.

- Equipment drop rate is too much (but need to, because you need them a lot to make materials).
- Field enemy running a little bit fast (later you will get item to run faster, and hover board).

Oh... It kinda felt that way in the demo but I was hoping it'd get complicated in the master version. It wasn't very difficult to get a 100+ hit combo in it. Oh well, maybe it'll require a little more finesse later on?

Thank you for impressions, by the way.

So totally OT, but I haven't seen you post in any RPG thread in a long while. Dunno if I just missed you or you've been away, but good to see you're alive!
Mostly been away/busy (esp this year) or when I show up it's for soundtrack threads. The Canadian dollar + my licensing exam murdered my games budget, haha. So I mostly play FF14, cheap VNs, and RPGs I've missed/backlogged until I balance my budget a little more.

I'm currently streaming some. Not sure how much longer I'll go, but. twitch.tv/elliotryo
this isn't natsuiro

why isn't this natsuiro

I tried to just write a couple of sentences, but I feel like it's important to contextualize everything, so here's kind of a writeup of the entire intro sequence.

Intro segment spoilers.

The game opens with a scene of Velvet and her younger brother, very young, escorted by their older brother in a forest, escaping some some violence in the village and searching for their older sister with a red moon in the sky. The two kids eventually collapse, and the older brother carries them over and sets them down. He says he's going to go on ahead and save their older sister. Time passes, and they hear a scream, their sister's. Then someone comes out of the bushes and transforms into a wolf, so they run away to find their older brother. They find him, standing over a pit.

Fast forward 7 years, and the younger brother is sickly, and the older brother and Velvet are taking care of him. There are rumors around town about the gouma disease edging closer to the village, but Velvet needs to go raise money to buy her brother's medicine, so she goes out of the village to fight boars and get their hides to sell to the shopkeeper. While out there, we discover that the older sister's anniversary of her death is approaching soon. The next day, Velvet awakens to find that her younger brother has left the house on his own. Blah blah blah, panic because sickly sibling, but she catches up with him and they head to the place where the older sister died, which is a shrine with a large pit in the center, to have a memorial. When heading back home, they're attacked by a werewolf. Velvet can't injure it, and eventually she shields the younger brother from an attack. Before she passes out, she sees the older brother killing the werewolf.

When she wakes up, the same red moon from the introduction is in the sky, and her family is nowhere to be seen. She rushes out into the village, but it's filled with werewolves and there are no townspeople. She rushes to the memorial site, which is also the place where they found the older brother 7 years prior, and her two siblings are standing there. "Throw away your feelings," her older brother says. "He must be sacrificed to revive the power of our salvation." He pulls out his sword, and stabs the younger brother in the chest. Velvet is horrified. The older brother begins to toss the younger brother's lifeless corpse into the pit. Velvet rushes and grabs the boy's hand just in time, but the older brother jams his sword into her hand and they fall.

A bright light erupts from the pit, and Velvet is ejected. When we see her, her left hand is missing, replaced by some demonic hand. She's furious, and can barely form any sentences. Her mind is only on killing her brother. Just then, she is attacked by many werewolves, and dispatches them all. "Take another look," her brother says. Velvet realizes that all of the bodies around her are those of the townspeople. All victims of gouma disease. Velvet is horrified, and then infuriated further. She rushes him, but he knocks her back and she is eventually knocked out.

And that's where the intro ends. So yeah. Pretty dark for Tales.

Anyone buying any DLCs? I bought 2200 yen worth of DLCs just now. So mad that many good costumes aren't available yet. Why...

Well seeing as they're aping Berserk, it's bound to get pretty edgelord, pretty fast. And since I only need one Berserk I think it's going to be another pass for Tales based on yours and other impressions.

Not really. Tales has been Edging it up for awhile now. I was wondering how long it will take in this game to show their hate boner for children, but corpses are in the intro. So, even faster than Xilia 2 XD

I'll offer the flipside of this. Berserk's so edgelord I can't actually tolerate it. Tempered with Tales' penchant for lighter stories (compared to stuff like Berserk lmao) might give this game an extra boost and actually make me care about the plot.

What Aeana wrote-up sounds very, very good. I'm in.

Not sure how I feel about a yet another darker Tales game. On one hand, I do love me some dark fantasy - Berserk and ASOIAF are some of the best shit ever. But after replaying Xillia 2, I'm not sure they can handle a dark storyline in a meaningful way. X2 was just fucking weird about all the dark shit going on in the story. Nothing felt genuine. It was weird.

I'm certain the character will be some silly light in an otherwise dark narrative.

At this point, for better or worse, I expect Tales narratives to be OK at best. I'm in it for the combat and the characters. If the dungeons and story are good, those are a nice bonus. Berseria is looking promising so far. I hope it lives up to that.

Really good to hear we finally have a good tales again?

I guess it's still too early to have a verdict on that. These game usually tend to get worse towards the end. Like...almost unbearably worse IMO.

I really hope that this game is not too long for its own good like the other entries.

Cool! Would you say Berseria > Vesperia or Vesperia > Berseria (if you played Vesperia)? What about Berseria > Graces F or Graces F > Berseria (again, assuming you played Graces F)? Thanks for the impressions, really nice!

Aeana's summary sounds so bizarre for Tales that I'm approaching intrigued (but am equally dismayed by the MC design).

Is it considered required to play Zestiria beforehand?

It's a prequel to Zestiria so you should be good. You get Velvet's old costume at the start so you don't need to use the main outfit.

I didn't EVEN touch Zestiria yet..... still sealed from Christmas in a box. I just lost so much hope in this series. I hope Berseria is good. I'll definitely stop by this thread to see criticism but hopefully no spoilers.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I hope the equipment system is better than Zestiria's at least.

Right at the start talking to random NPCs but looks like normal people can't see Malak after all?
The little girl says that she saw Laphicet talking with someone while being alone. Velvet then thought that he must be talking with Ceres. The oldman said that Arthur usually do the same thing too

I'm standing here in Singapore deciding whether to get or not before I head back home...
Please contribute to our local economy.

Actually our games are priced quite reasonably for Japanese games recently, it is more expensive if you get where you live?

I want Tales to get back on track and then I want to not see a Tales game again until like 2018. XD

Development cycle for a Tales usually takes around ~2 years bar Xillia 2 which recycled a lot from Xillia.

We're in Q3 2016 and it's been established that there's only a single team for developing Tales nowadays, unless it changed without us knowing (and in that case the game would've been in development for at least a year already) there's zero chance you will see another Tales before 2018.

Just saw Arthorius' Hi-Ougi and so far it's the best looking one, and it's not even a playable character. And even then it's kinda dull, with stale camera angle and stiff animation.

Hi-Ougi have really been going downhil post Graces and it saddens me.

Really? I loved it. Elevated it wayyyy above Xillia 1 in my estimations.

That's pretty dark, but for some reason Graces still comes off as darker to me, if only because of how the intro goes down. Still I like the tone set, problem is will the game keep it and will it stay balanced or will it hit Xillia 2 level silly.

I don't remember the Zestiria impressions being very positive. IIRC most were shitting on the skill system in particular.

I dunno, there was something that bugged me. It had a grim-dark plot with terrible shit happening in it for seemingly no reason other than to be grim-dark, but the characters still acted like they were in any other relatively chipper Tales game. I'd have to think about it more to actually figure out what it is that feels so wrong in it, but there's definitely something weird.

I still liked it, though. Ella was adorable and the bad ending was absolutely hilarious in its darkness and badass-ness. It's definitely not the worst Tales game around.

The one where he
rains down swords then does Yuri's Hi-Ougi?

Stop insulting Yuri's ougi by making a comparison. At least Yuri struck different poses and different angled strikes. Arthorius just slides around in a static pose like he is on rolerskates. I can't help but imagine some assistant jsut running around and pushing him ohter direction after each slash as he just stands there, looking important.

How was Zestiria import impressions? Maybe we can relate to that.

Started out positive for me then went to shit. By the end, I thought it was easily one the worst console Tales. It's definitely worse than Xillia 1/2 and Graces to me. Only good spot for me was Edna was amazing.

I picked up Berseria and got the B2 tapestry.

Well, yeah. TBH if it weren't for Japan being weird about letting consoles live way longer than they should, I'd say we missed the window for a PS4-only Tales since by the time another Tales hits the PS5 should be coming out.

There were lots of little touches I liked about it, like
the scene with fractured Milla getting replaced by prime Milla, with her saying "I knew I'd hate you"
. I also loved
ending up in the fractured dimension Elle came from and fractured Ludger was her father
, was literally reeling from that revelation.

With that said, the plot begins to fall apart a lot towards the end, but I still really enjoyed them taking the darker tone and the things this allowed them to try out.

Really? I would say that PS5 can be expected holiday 2019 at the earliest, and another Tales of game should definitely come out in the three years after Berseria (unless they are drastically shaking up the series, which is possible, but I doubt it). Since the next Tales of game after Berseria is PS4 only (in terms of Playstation), I can't it not hitting before PS5 tbh. Probably 2018 is the year to expect the new one (late 2018 I think).

The Amazon reviews are pretty positive so far. Keep in mind SO5 also was received positively at he beginning but then it took a nose dive after couple of days.

I only saw it once for a few secs and that's what it reminded me of, I'd never insult the best JRPG protag since Vesperia came out.

Berseria looks like a good game, the best Tales since vesperia ? So hype for this one but I read that the game will release in 2017, is the Japanese version has English sub ?
