I'd be buried under a pile of un-played games if it wasn't for digital. This year's Steam wall of shame count is probably around 50 games (many from bundles though).
Is there a way to see the date games were added to Steam?
My new years resolution...no new game purchases except for outstanding pre-orders that are already on my Amazon account.

I used to buy a lot of games but now I'm focusing on putting more time into only a few. Put 100+ hours into Pokemon and still working on it. Put a ton of hours in Rhythm Heaven going for perfects. Played through the main game in Shovel Knight but not much more because I didn't like it that much. Still working on Zero -- it had to take a back seat to Pokemon once Pokemon was released.

I've been keeping a rough account of my spends this year and it's been ok, not too over the top. Also a PS+ years subscription not included below.

Started this year in a "collect old games" phase so I bought a GBA(plus SP) and PS3 this year. Bought like 95% of the older gen games off Ebay for cheap while there was a TON of sales throughout the year for current gen games while also having Amazon Prime help with discounts a lot. Way too much this year, especially considering my available time to play games has dwindled pretty drastically. Some of this is a little misleading though as there are a few Humble Bundle deals included, and all the Star Wars games were in a really cheap bundle during a Steam sale.

Most of it on retrogaming (roughly 3/4 of the budget).
I don't expect to spend as much on retrogames next year since I rounded off the N64 and Wii library as I wished (almost completely).
I suppose a big part of how much I will spend in 2017 will depend if I buy a Switch or not.
Every game was purchased for less than 20 euro each (most closer to 10 than 20) with the exception of Tokyo Mirage Sessions (33 euro), Dragon Quest VII (40 euro) and NES Classic Mini (50 euro).
Lowest price for a physical game I paid was a measly 3 euro for Luigi's Mansion (on the digital side instead it was Shantae Pirate Curse/Affordable Space Adventures for 0,80 euro).

I've gotten much better about playing what I buy these days. I've ignored steam sales mostly, PSN sales have been so unreasonably disappointing that the few things I want to buy never go on sale. Made the smart decision to cancel a few games I knew I wouldn't have time for, like SMT: Apocalypse. But kept a few old preorders I shouldn't have due to them having prices that predate the Canadian dollar tanking.
List is vaguely in release order, most games are PC unless console exclusive or otherwise marked. Games I feel I didn't play enough or regret buying are bolded:
Dragon's Dogma - Finished the main story and got a good ways into the DLC. Cool game but got bored of being shoehorned into a specific spec later on due to bad balancing.
Darkest Dungeon - Played a shitload of it but gave up when it started getting grindy. Will go back someday.
XCOM 2 - I bought the Season Pass and haven't touched any of it. But it's my GOTY regardless.
Street Fighter V - Bought on PS4 and PC for some reason. Ended up working out, as I got to play the PC version early due to VPN (also it was cheaper) and I've needed to take the PS4 version with me places a few times.
Fire Emblem Fates (SE) - Didn't play it as much as I should have due to a lack of time as I was moving. Got about 15 hours in. Need to revisit this.
Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator - Did not even play it yet, but it's the only game this year where I did that. Only major regret on the list since the PC version has since come out.
Uncharted 4 - I don't really like Uncharted games but everyone said this was way better than the last ones. But it's pretty much the same thing. Didn't quite finish it.
Dark Souls 3 - didn't quite finish, but I feel like I got what I wanted out of it. Like most other Souls games I'll go back to it when I can get all the DLC for cheap.
Doom - Bought after seeing the Nvidia gameplay demo, preordered and VPN unlocked before most others played it. Became a Doom evangelist afterwards. Have gone back a few times as well.
Overwatch - Still playing it!
Tokyo Mirage Sessions - Surprisingly cool game that I wasn't expecting a ton out of. Got about halfway in before the Monster Hunter derailment. Preorder was some ancient $40 thing I made when it was still called Fire Emblem X SMT.
Monster Hunter Generations - Got my usual 300 hours out of it. No complaints, and really like the changes to Heavy Bowguns. But not really exceptional. Ended up with an unopened second copy because Amazon fucked up my shipping, so I had to go digital to play that weekend. Getting a refund would have been a hassle as my credit card expired at the same time, but whatever I don't mind supporting MH.
WoW Legion - Got sucked into this nonsense again, but I'm still playing it. Kudos for them rewarding those of us who are into challenging 5-man content.
Titanfall 2 - Enjoyed it a lot, but the multiplayer does get frustrating on PC due to poor balancing and extremely fast TTK. Got my money's worth but Greenman screwed me out of preorder bonuses.
Hitman™ - Did not expect to be into this one but Giantbomb convinced me to try it. Glad I did - have put 60-ish hours in and I'm not done yet.
FFXV - Had no confidence in this game but hilariously cheap Amazon price error made me keep the preorder. Game is terrible and deleted my savegame but eh, maybe they'll patch it someday.
TLG - Amazing game. Almost finished.

It's not even the games themselves that disgust me as much as it's the fact I tend to choose collector's editions over standard & I never do anything with the shit it comes with. Someone please convince me to get the standard edition of Horizon Zero Dawn & not its ridiculous collector's edition just so I can have the steelbook.
