Yooka-Laylee launches April 11th, considering Switch version instead of Wii U

The casino level looks neat. I wonder what the boss of it will be.

I hope we get some Switch footage at the event next month so I can decide whether I want to switch (heh) my backer copy to it.

I doubt there were a lot people who backed the game for a WiiU version, but I think they are handling the situation very well with refunds and all.

Game's gonna be fire BTW.

But they say there was.

When asked why the firm was internally handling Wii U over the other platforms, writer Andy Robinson said: “We naturally have so many backers who opted for Wii U. Because of the size of the team, we couldn’t take on all the consoles. You can imagine from a developer stand-point, that porting from PC to PS4 and Xbox One is slightly more straightforward than porting to Wii U.

“I also think it feels right playing it on a Nintendo system to some people

Sensible...but my sister is going to be very unhappy about this. Only platform she owns is Wii u and quite frankly, she can't afford to buy one of he others any time soon.

I know it's tough with kick-started projects to offer refunds... But if you cancel a version, that really should be an option for people who picked that one ;/

I had no real faith in a new developer getting the game out on Wii U anyway, just wish they'd have made moves sooner. No way is this game hitting Switch on April 11th, so I'll have to settle for it on another console.

Wtf? Wasn't the Wii U the lead console for this?
I honestly don't know why they ever said that since it was obviously being made on the PC.

The writing was on the wall from day 1 - it's a large scale Unity game. The chances of this running at a smooth frame-rate on Wii U was zero to nil. When announced, perhaps they were not yet fully aware of the issues it would present on the platform? Tough to say.

If a Wii U version was released, I doubt it would have been worth playing. Likely a very low, unstable frame-rate, lots of loading, hitching and skipping, etc. Would have been a technical mess.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
Nice to have a release date, not too surprising about the Wii U version, especially if it's releasing a month after the Switch. I wonder are Nintendo even letting people develop for Wii U at that point? Do we know of anything that's meant to be releasing after March?

Yeah, to repeat what I was saying earlier, it's a good move and I'd rather Playtonic delivers the game they are building on PC with zero compromises than having to make changes just to get the game running acceptably on Wii U, given it's a Unity engine release.

I'd also rather that than have Playtonic commit to a Wii U release that's a technical mess.

There's a small number of people who don't own a decent PC, a PS4 or an Xbox One and who backed this game. They shouldn't have to shell out an additional, what, £250? However, I'm unsure if there's any mechanism in place to refund just these people.

It just goes to show - the number one rule: Kickstarter is not a storefront.

I'm making the switch to Switch!

*sigh* If only Hyper Light Drifter, Cosmocoria, and other games had this option (I'm looking at you guys, with fire in my eyes)...

I'll most likely double dip on Shantae and Shovel Knight rereleases.

I mean its a Kickstarter they are already being extremely generous with the 50% off.

If your game can't run on Wii U stop making it an option, in this case is worse imo because Wii U had a lot of backers.

I'm interested in the project but the new trailer did nothing for me. Sure, we're ~5 months away from a release, but right now there are a lot of big, empty areas shown in that gameplay.

Was pretty dumb to have announced a Wii U version in the first place imo, it obviously wasn't going to be economically viable, even if it was technically viable. Same goes for other Kickstarter games that promised a Wii U version.

It's a good idea to put it on the Switch though.

If i'm reading that right, he seems to be saying that it's a PC game to start. But they're letting another developer handle the PS4/Xbox One versions of it because the porting process is easier than porting it to the Wii U. They were going to handle that on their own in order to make sure that it's as good as possible since so many Nintendo fans were backing it.

Bloodstained is in a similar situation I believe so if we're counting YL as switch confirmed we should count that as well. Also that indie game eurogamer posted images of.

Did this get confirmed for Bloodstained? always thought it was insane that they were going to port UE4 to the wii u

I mean, can't blame them but I think the Wii U has like 1 out of what feels like . 100 kickstarter releases not cancelled (Shovel Knight). RIP in ports. Kickstarters are gonna go need to find another buy-in.

"unforeseen technical issues" = "Nintendo dropping the console and announcing a new one". ;)

Fully understand their descision, but as said above here in this thread, it was dumb to announce the WiiU version to begin with. And they should have dumped it earlier then his.

Switch version will have been in the works for a while.

The Wii U version was actually the main version being developed in house. Barely any copied would have been sold tbh, so this is 100% the right decision.

I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being a timed exclusive for Switch and releasing on launch day with the other versions following in April.

I'll be buying the day it launches on Switch whenever that is.

Excited to see a release date and the new, totally not fraudulent level! I also like Capital B's dialogue sound.

Shame about the Wii U version, but at least they're offering refunds or to switch (no pun intended) to another platform.

Lol this makes all the sense of the world and many people were saying this would happen.

I'll be getting the Switch version.

On dropping the Wii U version:

"The reality is this: As timelines move on, certain pieces of hardware become irrelevant. Sometimes new pieces of hardware come out that make you think about what is the right strategy. And as a creator, usually you want to make stuff for the new hardware. That's the reality."

Sounds like a Switch version is inevitable. Otherwise there would have been no comment on new pieces of hardware, as their reasoning for dropping the Wii U (being a dead console that is now extremely irrelevant) is sound on its own.

I don't blame them for cancelling the Wii-U version at all, completely understandable. Look forward to playing it on my new Nintendo Switch.
