Is this series really that good, or is it mostly nostalgia hype? Sorry if I'm being ignorant, but I'm considering playing the originals.

The fighting is awesome and is basically Virtua Fighter.

Towns are fully realized versions of Japan and Hong Kong from the late 80s.

There's an insane level of exploration.

The QTEs are a blast.

The story is epic and has us all wanting more.

Yes, it's very good.

NullDC is too slow. Chankast gets the performance right in my opinion.

other way around.

nulldc has a number of visual bugs and shenmue II has a pretty rough crash ratio.

demul doesn't have these, but it can be very resource intensive if you're running it at say, 3x resolution.

naw, not that i've seen anyway. that's kind of how it goes though. it's very rare to see retractions or edits without much publisher pressure

I doubt those authors will admit to their readers they jumped to conclusions and wrote a negative opinion piece about something without having the facts (or at the very least some good indications).

Play Shenmue in 2014 and it’s just as easy to be absorbed by its fiction as anything that Naughty Dog’s realised in recent years.
