Finally tried out VR for the first time since I got it for free. The hype is real. Also, rip humanity
where the fuck are the all the facesitting videos in VR? Gimmie Jada Stevens or Proxy Paige doing it and i'll subscribe to any site

If anyone is interested in streaming their phone to a monitor or laptop, I found an app MirrorOp that seems to be the best for it.

It allows you to see what your friends are seeing through the Gear VR. I use it all the time to see exactly what scares the shit out of them when playing Dreadhalls (buy it!)

I tried using Chromecast but it freezes immediately, it's trying to stream at way to high a resolution, so lower it on MirrorOp and turn off the remote setting, also disable audio and you'll have what seems to be the best solution for now

I tried this today at a best buy. First vr experience and it was pretty cool however the screen was in super low resolution. Very blocky and blurry overall.

I have a hard time loading things in Gear VR. I'm trying to watch Cirque du Soleil but a ring keeps spinning forever in the middle of the screen. I can't connect to Oculus Store most of the time. Even videos I've copied to my phone memory don't always work in Oculus Video (a ring keeps spinning when I click "My videos"

Any ideas?

Interesting.

Also, I would like to announce that I am now accepting PMs from any members who think they have a good VR porn recommendation.

If you'd be so kind, maybe you could aggregate all recomandations you get from fellow Gaffers and send me a PM too? I myself am doing a paper on that very subject and I find it kinda hard to get my hands on some meaty literature.

Thanks ;)

Edit: don't have a GearVR, but gotta be ready when PSVR hits the ground, hope they'll allow us to watch any VR vids from the start.

I also have issues streaming stuff on the s7 edge. Absolutely no problem streaming outside of GearVR. Guessing it's their crap servers.

That's amazing. I need to get in on this couch breaking action.
Hahaha, I need to get in on this too. Haven't messed around much with any multiplayer stuff except VR karts.

Has anyone tried out the Dualshock 4 with the Galaxy S7(or S7 Edge)? I'm curious about the USB adaptor that came with my S7...

How do people think Google's inevitable Project Tango VR product will fit in with Gear VR and Cardboard?

Will we see a Galaxy S8/9 with Tango built in and the tech merged into Gear VR? If Google release a Gear VR competitor with Tango built in that any phone can use would Samsung continue with its own VR solution as well?

I really feel Tango will be massive for mobile VR and I'm wondering how much legs the Gear project has when Google get serious about VR. But I also like the quality a reduced handset compatibility can bring and think a Gear VR Tango could bridge the gap to PS VR and the big boys better than a Tango Cardboard.

I haven't received enough recommendations and I don't have the VR headset yet to check them out. Would be happy to once I can view a couple.

I think I'm going to head out and pick up this Ipega controller later today. I've had my Gear VR for a couple of month's now and while I know the Steelseries Stratus XL is probably the best controller to get, it's way too expensive, and I just want something that works decently with all the games. The iPega seems to fit the bill.

A few thoughts on the games/experiences I've tried.

Colosse: Visually interesting, but that's about it. Worth trying out tho.

Titans of Space: One of the best free VR experiences out there. I wish the sense of scale was better, but swooping between planets can be pretty thrilling.

theBluVR: Neat, feels very truncated, but a neat proof of concept.

Smash Hit: It's free, and it's one of the most experienced and full-featured games on Gear VR. I wasn't sure this would be my thing, but it's a perfect example of how adding presence to a game can improve engagement. Slick, polished graphics, very satisfying physics and dead simple, but challenging gameplay.

Dead Secret: I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty cool. I wish it didn't have the light horror elements it does, I've long since established that horror in VR is a mortifying experience and I don't EVER want to engage in it. That said, I like the light detective work, I just wish it was a little more engaging.

Land's End: Along with Smash Hit and Titans of Space, this probably completes my trifecta of best experiences.

Neverout: Probably gave me the strongest feeling of presence so far. Something about the high resolution nature of the textures in game makes things feel really solid.

Videos: I don't care for any of these, bar the Netflix app. Everything just looks too murky.

Streaming in VR seems to suck overall. The quality just isn't good enough.

Jesus Christ it has been two weeks since the expiration of their "15 working days" time frame, in which they should've reviewed my form and get back to me with an email (to get this damn gearvr).
I've contacted them several times now, and they keep saying they're behind with them, because they have too many requests, and will eventually get to mine.
Is that realistic or are they just taking the piss? 2 extra weeks just to review the form, not even shipping the thing.

Maybe they really were caught off guard by the amount of people getting an s6 for this, and yet they also need people with an s7 one, now.

Should I just cave in and buy one? Even though I specifically bought the phone because of the promotion?

Heard anything back from them? Just ordered the phone from verizon and it should show up tomorrow. Getting worried about actually getting the gearvr now once i can sign up.

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
I wish we could have the option of downloading anything and everything over 4G because we got no data caps here.
And not being able to download somewhere without a wifi is bad.

Take of headset, turn on wifi, put headset back on. Its not a big thing but odd.

Question guys, thinking of picking up an Android for this(after years of Apple stuff) and I was wondering what would be a good phone to pick up. Is the Galaxy S7 worth going for or should I just go for the S6 family?

Absolutely get an S7.

In addition to the improvements (battery life, SD card, waterproofing, etc) the problem with Android ecosystem in general is that devices lose support quickly. I would never recommend anyone buy an Android phone that was a year or older unless they were on a super tight budget, and were buying used to save cash.

Is there a noticable difference between the galaxy s6 and s7 in terms of gear VR? Curious whether it would be practical to buy one for gearVR only, and that would probably mean a cheaper s6

I prefer American performers to European ones (except Misha Cross and Tiffany Doll), so yes, there is beating VRP.

Nope.
I keep sending them emails every other week, and they keep saying "we'll get to it", but at this point it feels like a joke.
If by the end of March they keep this up, i'll take the L and just get a refurbished/used one from Amazon.

They even told me to "remember to check my spam folder", lol.
The equivalent of "have you tried turning it off and on again?".

Played some Social Trivia last night and it was fun. It was fast and easy to get into games, and seeing avatars move and knowing that the person is moving their head in real life is weird and cool. A guy had a joystick synced to his phone and had a devil head avatar and started roaming in a circle around the table. About to hop on again and get more into it as I want to make a video about it.

Also, my Gear VR username is CharlesAlanRatliff if anyone wants to add me to their Friends list.

I'm using a Note 5, and last night was the first time I got an overheating message. I've had the Gear VR since launch. It booted me out of the trivia game and I had to stop playing for a while. I'm not sure if it was because I was trying to record footage of Adventure Time: Magic Man's Head Games before or not, or if it's an issue caused by one of the recent patches like I saw suggested on reddit. I guess I'll find out today!

Just played Social Trivia for over an hour. Up to 53 XP and #255 on the leaderboard now. I've seen one repeat question thus far. Hopefully that doesn't end up happening too much. We should set up a GAF game sometime.

You can't use the usb connector when the phone is connected to gearvr. Bluetooth controllers should be fine.

I could not wait for my gear vr and got myself a cardboard to try it out with my new s7. The screen door effect was way way less than my only vr experience until then which was Oculus rift 1st developer kit so that was nice to see but it did not seem good enough to watch a movie in the cinema player and also some of the applications I've tried were not all that smooth.

Sorry if it has been asked before but how much better is gear vr than cardboard? Is there a big difference? Is watching Netflix on it something you can do and not be distracted by the vr limitations?

For me GEAR VR is WAY better than Cardboard. And Carboard is fun, but Gear VR is like going to a entirely different generation. It felt that way to me.

It is itself far behind the actual Rift, but GEAR VR is really fun. Netflix is great on it.

VR Porn is legit amazing. VirtualRealPorn is definitely a step above the rest. When the girls get up in your face.... oh my goodness.

VR porn is going to take getting caught to a whole new level. I might have to move into some secluded mountainous area if I'm ever caught with my jeans to me knees, jerking it furiously with a big ass VR headset over my head.

I don't have any interest in the games, but as someone who watches a huge amount of Netflix and Twitch on my phone (along with some TV network apps like CTV, Global, etc) is it possible (good?) to use this thing just for video watching? Does it only handle special VR video content or can I play anything on it? I have an S6 currently.

The Oculus Video app can play most regular video file extensions, so yeah, have fun watching your 2D movies on a big virtual theater screen.

You can, but honestly I don't find the resolution satisfactory enough for most things. You have to make the screen pretty big to get a nice level of detail and then you run into the issue of blur and chromatic aberration all around the place your focusing. You have to move your whole head instead of just your eyes when you want to look anywhere.

Late last month the Universal Menu was updated and fully redesigned. I made a video showing it off (and a video showing off what the original Universal Menu looks like a couple of days before), and now it is being updated again. Some of you will have it now (it is still being rolled out), but there will be a new function inside the Universal Menu that allows you to take screenshots and video. You can read the official documentation of it here. I have just learned though that audio is not captured due to complications with Android, but that they are working on it.

Hopefully they can come up with a solution that includes audio. I don't have the update myself so I can't compare what the quality of the video looks like, but it would be good to have a built-in solution for getting undistorted, single-eye captures. I recorded two of my friends trying the Gear VR for the first time, and I wish I could have recorded the video from their sessions. Instead, I recorded my own and matched it up with their playthroughs. I would never want to introduce someone to VR while using my recording method (which involves a Chomecast, Elgato, and HDCP stripper) as it can cause frame drops in the headset. I'm not sure how their built-in system impacts your experience, if at all.

I also made a video earlier this month talking about the S6, Note 5, and S7 in terms of virtual reality. Now that the S7 is out, I have heard of people having issues with it when using the Gear VR. I would love to see more reports from people with the new phones and how things are going, especially in terms of framerate, battery, and overheating issues (if any).

Would there be any interest in a Google doc for NeoGAF members to add each other as friends on the Gear VR? You can't really interact directly with friends yet, but ideally they will add invite systems soon so you can actually setup games properly.

Got this update today, if they can get audio working that solves all my problems for covering games on YouTube

Even if they can't, I could see a solution being feeding audio through the headphone jack to Audacity, or an external bluetooth device for capturing (ideally you don't want any wires)

There are primarily 2 sites shooting American performers in VR. One of them is still getting slammed on the tech issues. The other one (the one I'm a member of), is good on the tech side, but arguably not as good as VRP. But they have shot some of the best American performers (Remy, Mia Malkova, Rachel Starr, and a few of my personal favorites like Karla Kush and Casey Calvert).

No experience prior to my own S7 (Europe so Exynos chip)... It's nice but definitely has hiccups in most games and experiences. In some 360 video apps I have segments not rendered showing as black when moving my head, not even all that fast sometimes. In Smash Hit I get a lot of framerate hiccups, and when things get hectic with lots of glass smashing it really drops. I expected better cos it is still a relatively simple game to render. It looks great when working well, would be nice to have a consistent experience though. I HOPE this is just S7 launch hiccups until the software is all updated to make best use of the new phone...

I just saw that I have it now too. I tested it with Gunjack. 18 MB for a 30-second file. The video quality is pretty good and the framerate is consistent. The video itself is 1024x1024. I have the cable to do what you're talking about. I'll try it out later and see how it goes.

Here's the one screenshot I took using the screenshot capture feature:

Sorry to hear that and thanks for letting me know. The only time I have had major framerate/screen-tearing issues (Note 5) is in the Oculus Social Beta lobby. Hopefully they get everything worked out on the new phones soon.

Just got an S7 with Gear VR. It's my first VR experience and it's just okay. I'm surprised at how much of the area surrounding the lenses I could see, I was expecting the image to fill my FOV, instead it's like I'm in a Big Daddy dive suit from Bioshock looking around. Are the Vive and Rift similar? Doesn't seem like it's as immersive as game journalists claim if that's the case.

Yeah I was a little disappointed too. The minute I saw how small the lenses were I knew it would be quite "tunnel vision" like. My main issue though is how blurry the screen is just off the centre, and this blurry area is really sensitive to movement of the headset. Constantly makes me feel like my vision is gone, like having a big smudge on my glasses just off to the side. Looking at PSVR images of the lenses they look significantly bigger than Gear VR so I'm hoping the experience there is broader with a much broader area where the clarity is always there. Rift and Vive must be likewise. Gear VR does disappoint on this matter.

There was supposed to be some sort of Anshar Wars 2 announce/update this week before or as part of GDC. I can't find anything online. Does anyone know what this was about?

100 degree field of vision on PSVR/Rift/Vive means it's basically tunnel vision as well.

I know when I tried PSVR for the first time, the FOV seemed really small. Not as bothered with the FOV on the Gear VR.

I've also been on apples eco system forever. How does one go about the iCloud transferring of photos? I have thousands and thousands of pictures and videos from over 8 years
