Samsung Gear VR : Consumer Edition Thread: Goodbye, real world.

The sense of scale is impressive here but I don't know if it's me or due to the devices limitation, I can't really tell depth perception much. Like for instance, if I see something 20 feet away, it doesn't really feel like it's 20 feet away. Is that right?

It will heavily depend on what you're viewing and how well it was captured. For the most part, these are 3D devices with panoramic viewing angles (some 180, some 360). Not VR, or what I would consider to be VR. For instance, you can't move yourself (either your personal body or with a controller an avatar of yourself) within the confines of what you are viewing to see it from a different angle. At least not that I've seen with GearVR. Maybe that's true with the Vive and the full room thing.

But you'll see as you watch different videos that some were captured with much better equipment and give you a better sense of depth perception, while others still feel "flat" for lack of a better word.

I have a question with the gear vr (or I guess, the oculus video app to be specific): When viewing SBS content, does the gear vr actually detect and separate both sides to display each side to each eye exclusively, or does it work like google cardboard where it simply uses the lens and the offset between the lens to give each eye a view of each side. If it does separate properly, is there any advantage to that over how cardboard works (other than not needing your phone to be dead centered for separation to work properly)?

Well that would make sense because stereoscopic vision only works to about 18 feet. After that you need parallax cues, so either the object needs to move a lot across the horizon, or you need to move your head, which the gear VR isn't able to track.
It's why porn works the best, because they like to get up in yo face.

Plus in porn objects also tend to move...quite a bit...so I've heard.

I'm actually blind in one eye (mostly) so stereoscopic vision is lost on me. Still the VR experience has been good for me with Gear VR. Also, I wear glasses, but the adjustment on the device has enough in it to ensure I don't need glasses when wearing the device, so I've been very impressed.

Seeing how it's a work phone I'm using I'm happy at the low entry price for this.

You guys should really check out Annie Amber. It's worth the 7.99 I paid. Amazing visual experience, with incredible vistas, with giant planets looming above you. And great sound design. It's like exploring someones dreams. It's from the developer of MIND: Path to Thalamus.

Swivel chair highly recommended or play standing.

I watched a bunch of youtube side-by-side 3d videos (search 3d sbs) in Samsung Internet last night. The 3d on this device is rather impressive. The Youtube ads were especially annoying though.
It would be nice if there was a list of cool websites to check out from within Samsung internet.

Also I wanted to check out the Matterport scans after Tested did an interview with them. I didn't remember seeing the app in the Oculus store, but it came up after a search. It makes me wonder if there are a bunch of appa that I have no way of knowing about because they aren't prominently displayed.

I'm confused right now. I got a GearVR in today with a Galaxy Note 5. I plugged the phone into the Gear VR and the steps say I should get a Gear VR software prompt, but the phone stays on the Home Screen. I didn't put the SIM card in yet as I have it set to my Wifi. Do I need the sim card in the phone to setup the Gear VR software?

Just wanted to chime in here and say I've been having a blast playing QuakeGVR from http://sideloadvr.com/ - super worth checking it out if you enjoy Quake, FPSs, or atmospheric VR. Just snagged the pak files off my old cd so I have the full version on my phone. Runs great on an S7, and there's even a strangely compelling third person mode called "toy soldier mode" that's worth trying.

I'd played Quake 1 and 2 on DK2 a while back, but now I'm a huge fan of the swivel chair setup (plus no cord!) for FPSs. I hope we get more swivel chair FPSs for gear VR - it's probably the one design area where Gear shines over Rift / Vive at the moment.

Holy shit, listen to this man. It's incredible how well it works. Quake might just be my favorite VR thing, lol.

I'm thinking of buying either an S6 or S6 Edge - how is the performance on those devices for VR content and does the curved edge screen get in the way at all?

What controller are you using? Good/bad? I'm looking at the stratus xl...no built in recharge or rumble is disappointing and I think I heard Xbox controllers don't work with gear yet? I like that the stratus also works with PC games.

I have to say, it's because of Gear VR that has me on the fence to get an S7 Edge. One question about the S7. WITH a case on, how bulky is it in your pocket? I have an iPhone 6+, and it's totally not practical for me. I can't fit it comfortably in a pocket with an otterbox on it, and when it sits in my pocket for longer than 20 minutes, the indentations start to gather condensation lol.

Should I spring for an Edge or a regular S7?

I've been playing QuakeVR much of the past week or so after not using my gearvr for awhile. Have you been using the high texture pack?

The S7E is an incredible phone with the best camera and some of the most useful features I've ever used. At first it may seem a little gimmicky but the extra information and quick access really helps out. Battery life is superb and recharge times are out of this world. I definitely wouldn't say the phone is bulky - if anything, it is super sleek. Get a nice thin case and you're golden.

Finally figured out how to use Plex with MilkVRLauncher instead of Emby and the quality and being able to seek in videos actually makes me alright with the S6 not having expandable storage.

While I'm pretty happy with getting the phone and the headset for £200, having the S6 for a little bit reminded me why I dropped Samsung after the S4. Glad I'm just using it for VR stuff and not as my actual phone.

This thing has pretty much become my porn device

Lets just say someone was to look at porn through the Samsung browser... how would one delete their search history.

Also, showed this thing off yesterday to some family members and they were all super impressed. They all had the same beliefs that I had about vr "meh". That all changed when I showed them the Avengers tech and Jurassic Park tech. Big fan of Gunjack and Dead Secret. Can only imagine what the future holds for VR. The NCAA app was great, now theres a Masters app. Just imagine an NFL app!!!

^ My goodness an NFL app would be crazy. I could see that the combination of fantasy sports. Or if they made a VR app for NFL redzone... Christ..

I still can't believe how good Smash hit is on this thing. I'd almost consider it a killer app for that game alone. What you should do is have someone play the regular version. They'd probably think it's a good, fun game, which it pretty much is. The VR turns it into something else, lol...

I'm definitely going to be harming the overall battery capacity over time if I use this thing too much. At least when we all get our next phone, this can serve as a dedicated VR device, lol. But by then I wonder if Samsung will be pushing higher res phones..

So just a heads up if you plug your VR up and it says you need to update, yet there's no update available. Just start an Oculus app and plug your phone in, once you unplug the update should show.

I'm using this $16 ipega also doesn't have rumble and has a more compact setup for trigger buttons (that I kinda like after getting used to it) and works great.

I upgraded from an iphone5 to a regular S7 and thought that jump was perfect. It's bigger, but still fits in my pocket fine. I use a two-layer case that's still pretty slim, but could put an otterbox on there and it'd still be pocketable. The edge just seemed too big for me, but it isnt phablet-sized. Check them both out at a wireless shop if you can.

Assuming you have a Plex server setup (there's plenty of tutorials out there if not!): download and install the MilkVRLauncher to your phone
Also grab BubbleUPnP from Google Play

Run BubbleUPnP. It should find the server automatically if they're on the same network. Pick the video you want streamed and when it asks you to pick a player, pick MilkVRLauncher. Give the video a name for MilkVR and pick the format, hit the button and it will ask you to put your headset on. Just cancel as it will now create a file in your MilkVR folder which can be picked at anytime as long as the Plex server is up.

So my girl is getting one... Whenever the hell it arrives, does this vr headset work with my galaxy S6 edge+ ?

Yes. As far as I know, it works with the Note 5, every version of the S6 including the Edge+, and the S7s. And probably the Note 6 when it comes out this summer, but that's no guarantee.

Ok. Thanks! I have used StreamTheater from SideloadVR to run Remote Desktop on my PC and loaded up Chrome to watch Plex content. Works pretty well too and gives you different theaters to watch in.

Yeah, I was doing that and it was working great on regular 2D movie content. This was a lot better for VR content.

I like Gear VR but mainly for cool milkvr experiences like balloon riding. After an hour I can feel eye strain.

It really does feel like first gen tech but I'm grateful to be on the first wave trying this out.

You can totally see where this tech will go down the road which makes it exciting to be able to say you were there at the start.

Got mine today and as stated above it feels like a first gen product. The experience is cool but the resolution and quality of the picture isn't great... I wonder how much better are the Rift and Vive compared to the Samsung gear. Also, people will have to seriously see a chiropractor after spending too much time on that my neck already hurts

This wasn't even a little on my radar, but I'm seriously considering picking up a Galaxy S7 Edge this weekend and I can't see myself not dropping a little extra cash to check this out.

My only VR experience has been with some 360 3D video that wasn't even entirely of a pornagraphic nature and shoving my phone in my face til my eyes could focus on a side by side. This should be a step up.

This. I upgraded from an s5 to an s7E and it really is a massive improvement. The screen blows my mind, it;s so good. It's not noticeably bigger either, because of the Edge and the side-apps actually make it easier to use than the old phone.

I do miss the stylus from my old Note 2, but using this phone makes the iphone look like a Nokia 3210, it's that much better.

I got mine last week. Definitely generation 1, but it;s actually reqlly impressive for what is something powered by a phone.

The first thing I played was Land's End. 5 minutes in, I was sold on VR.

Consider Gear VR as an impressive and enjoyable gateway drug and you're golden.

That's exactly what I would hope to see. Just a taste while the high end PC versions of things get the kinks ironed out and some more games on the table (and a price drop or seven).
