TITANFALL 2 Reviews Thread

That's subjective, but throwing around the 6 number is misleading. There are 9 maps in the game, regardless of how one feels about them.

It's not misleading because his context was pretty damn clear. At best he's getting 6 good maps at launch, which is terribly low by any reasonable standard. It's weird how Titanfall 1 was criticized for lacking content at release yet its sequel is launching with a tiny amount of maps and critics are celebrating how complete the whole thing is. I know a multiplayer game is more than just map numbers, obviously, but it's still hard to wrap my head around.

I've made peace with the maps, I think, so at this point I'm mostly worried about the campaign writing. Some people seem to love it but it's getting some criticism too, and after Gears 4's praised but absolute Whedonesque garbage I'm worried I'm going to fall on the critical side. Gah.

Great job cutting the rest of my post. I don't have to know any intimate details about this specific project to know that EA only invests in highly profitable projects, with the goal of making as much money as possible. I also gave examples in my post for that. What I don't quite understand is, why exactly are you defending a publisher like EA here? I mean I get defending developers, which you have done here unnecessarily by posting a snarky "lazy devs!" when not a single person here really blamed the devs for the length of the campaign. But EA? Really?

I think what he's saying is you don't know a lot about how game development works, and assume that you do. It's not as cut and dry as saying, "Oh, we'll make this game 20 hours! AAA, hire a full orchestra for the soundtrack, etc."

Next time I interview Respawn again, I'll ask your question (for real). ;)

Game development and games media are the same in this regard from some people: everyone thinks they can do a better job at what someone is doing, or that they're lazy, and/or, shady, etc.

Being honest, the story isn't that memorable for me. However, the way the game unfolds, how it's not just setpiece A followed by setpiece B, here's wave A to take out, etc. is definitely good. Lots of cool gameplay mechanics introduced that feel fresh, and the pacing is spot-on.

But do you really want to chase off your most loyal fans? Titanfall 2 was probably my most anticipated game of the year before the tech test. After that I decided I would rent it at launch see if enough of my complaints were addressed to warrant picking it up, otherwise I'll just use that money to buy a year of Live and continue playing the original.

Every game has to have a balance for both the most loyal/hardcore and the casual audience unless your game has a huge loyal fanbase which Titanfall 1 did not have.

They did change a ton of things from the Tech Test to launch but asking them to make it exactly like Titanfall 1 is not the right move since the first one did not keep players.

and they suck

Homestead will at least be good for Last Titan Standing and Boomtown doesn't suck, it's just not as strong of a map compared to maps from R1. I can't defend Forward Base Kodai, though. That map is completely counter intuitive to what makes a Titanfall map good; plays like a CoD map imo. Maybe it'll be a good LTS maps but who knows.

Kind of a weird question I guess for those who've played it:

Is the campaign suitable for a 13 year old?

My son likes to sit in on some campaigns I play like Uncharted 4, Halo 5, and such
It should be fine, but expect:
• Swearing
• Blood
• Gore (punching a human (Grunt/Pilot) will make them explode into bloody mush)
• Violence (Executionary kills that involve acts like stabbing, shooting, and neck snapping)

I doubt there will be anything sexual or drug use related. I checked the ESRB rating and didn't notice either of those listed. Thematically the game is going for adventure and seems to be borrowing bits and pieces of the Star Wars formula so I wouldn't be worried about that either.

boom.

Also this thread would have a lot of people calling them lazy for just making the same game again. There's no middle ground on this. Someone is always upset.

Officially it's rated 'M' for the reasons listed, but in my oh-so-personal opinion, calibrating off of UC4 & H5 as you mentioned; I think you'll be okay, yes. Feel free to PM if you have specific questions.

Has anyone done a digital preorder at bestbuy before? when do they usually email codes out? It just says email sent on their site and never received one. BB support had no clue and guessed that it was just a promo code sent out and not the game code.

I got an email with my gears 4 code the next day but that day happened to be the release date so it could come the next day or the day the game releases.

The whole battery system and lack of starting shields on titans makes me think that I'll have a much harder time when playing solo, which is already enough of a problem in most shooters these days.

Its great for teams focused on being competitive, but its exactly the kind of thing that makes the game less accessible for casual fun like the original.

I thought this was the case too but I think the battery system is much better than the old rodeo system which really was much simpler. Complexity isn't bad and in this case I like how it rewards rodeoing for the pilot while also limiting the damage to a Titan in a single rodeo.

Titanfall 1 favored the pilot if the Titan didn't pick electric smoke and favored the Titan if it did. It was very basic and not much fun for either.

You're a fucking boss and PMing now (^____^)

I hope so, didn't know if its something that comes out at midnight or like in the morning tuesday. Its shocking no one on their phone support has any idea :/

So strange, it came in an hour when I did it. Perhaps they're being lazy ;(

Frankly I'll be satisfied if the dialogue isn't making me constantly roll my eyes or even actively make fun of the game, which is what's happening with Gears 4. (*X happens* "X just happened! Here's a smirky, obvious quip because nobody cares about tension or drama!")

I definitely like what you're saying about the fresh variety of the gameplay, at least!

I know there's campaign videos, but I'm weird about spoilers so I've stayed away. Crossing my fingers.

Totally thought this was releasing tonight, super bummed it's not.

I dislike this new trend of games releasing on Fridays because, despite Friday in a lot of ways being a better day to release games, Tuesday releases are so ingrained in my mind that it doesn't feel like I'm getting the game 4 days early, it feels like I'm getting it 3 days late.

Can you now comment on what the game is running at on each platform? I haven't seen any reviews mention it yet.

Digital Foundry hasn't posted anything

Glad it's reviewing well. Hopefully the multiplayer has a lot more staying power than the first, because I might pick this up sometime next year.

This is what he said a couple days ago. Sounds much improved from the Tech Test.

Both consoles are steady 60fps even without being Pro hardware. Higher res than the Tech Test build and some more tricks up our sleeves since then.

Then on Pro it's nicer beyond the base PS4 (I guess we'll be more specific later?), but no framerate advantage since it's already up at 60fps.

Looking forward to a Digital Foundry article, if they find the time. They're always merciless but fair. ;)

I've only very barely barely worked on rendering for this project, so I can say: the people here that did and the artists they support have done some amazing stuff. A lot of it's under the hood, some of it more obvious, but light years beyond what we had available two years ago.

PC version for me, if I get it. Depends on how good the campaign is, and I haven't started reading the reviews yet, but those are some very good scores so far.

don't even. On console the most loyal fans are all going to jump on the new game. Tons of reddit pc veterans as well, and if not all then most of the visible veterans from the competitive pc community.

Yes, there are some "loyal" fans that have cried and claim they won't be buying titanfall 2 but don't pretend that group isn't in the minority
You already made it very clear in the tech test thread that you have qualifications as to what a "loyal fan" of Titanfall is and that the opinions of those that don't meet them don't matter as much because they weren't playing it the "right way". I'm sure some of the changes that were made due to the feedback given from the tech test caused some people to change their minds, and that's fine. There were changes made that I'm glad to see, but there are still things that I, and I'm sure others, still have problems with. I've said I'm still willing to give the final release one last shot by renting it at launch. I want to like it, I really do, and I hope the full game can sell me on it.
