TITANFALL 2 Reviews Thread

If you pay attention, it looked like most of the gaming sites played TF2 as if it were COD. You can't really expect them to be great at the mechanics I guess, but that is still a strong argument to show that reviews from these gaming sites aren't very reliable.

But isn't that the developer's fault for not rewarding players more when they utilize TF2's mechanics instead of ones they learned from COD?

Look at that Polygon gameplay. The player used literally NONE of the mechanics unique to Titanfall, but was still highest scorer on his team and got tons of positive feedback in-game ("Nice job pilot! They don't know who they're messing with!"). This probably led him to believe he had a good enough feel for the game's mechanics to write a review about them, even though he clearly didn't.

Maybe Respawn should've thrown a couple of developers/testers in that match just to give reviewers a taste of the type of play they should strive towards.

Post this video, I need to see what playing Battlefield well actually means.

Well, he was playing as a sniper in the footage. ;) But doing well as that class. http://www.playstationlifestyle.net...est-monte-grappa-empire-forest-maps/#/slide/1

We might be one of the few sites that have FPS MP fans that play them religiously. Case in point: I master prestiged in BO3 (which meant I played it a LOT), and I don't think I'm bad in BF4, either (BF1 only at level 16 due to having to work for the site): http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf4/soldier/excaliburps/stats/233890030/ps4/

We can't attend/play every MP session for press, though.

Same as R1, full support with aim assist, this time comes with Dualshock 4 support as well.

Titanfall's hit detection and lag compensation has been extremely good. Due to local xbox and origin population being low in Asia I often play on US West servers back in R1 and the experience was always good.

Yeah, I gather so. Even in the tech test, servers seemed awesome that I didn't get killed feeling like it was lag. Hit detection is very good as well.

Also, I don't seem to remember seeing the red outlines for Pilots during my MP time. Either it was taken out completely, or it's toned down significantly. :D

It's not their developer fault. In usual MP session scenario those who don't utilized the available mechanics will be punished by having lower score/constant deaths and those who do will be rewarded accordingly by having high skill score and of course winning the game. In that video however, it was probably a press event where EA pit a team of journalist against each other. With both side being equally horrible, then of course poor play will be rewarded.

If that was the first time Polygon reviewer touch the game, then I can't blame him. Even if he was briefed on what was the game about,he still need to get used to the mechanic.

Caved on a PC copy. Got some Amazon credit yesterday so why not. Mainly excited for the campaign and then see how multiplayer is.

I just picked it up on PS4. Gonna play tonight. Excited for the campaign until my copy of BF1 shows up. Never thought I'd be buying BF1 and TF at launch but here we are.

holy shit

;) That was against other press, by the way. Haha! I might be super biased here, but when it comes to FPS' (especially MP-focused ones), we can hang with the best of them and our coverage is better, I think, since me and that guy you saw play in the video play a lot of them; like, really play them. I played BO3, Overwatch, etc. with GAF as well, and I don't think I was dead weight or anything.

But yeah, some press people don't play well in MP games and that could heavily skew a review to one way due to them not understanding stuff, interpreting it wrong, etc.

Oh yeh

Which is why I suggested that a few developers/testers should've been thrown into that match, to discourage poor play.

It's a shame that so many people might write off TF2 because of a 7 score coming from someone who didn't fully grasp the game's mechanics.

I don't think it's really fair to say that doesn't make them reliable. Just that, maybe, they're not reliable for you and the perspective you're coming from. Reviews are just subjective write-ups of the reviewer's play experience. If they're reviewing it from a more casual perspective than the Titanfall superfans, then that's ok, because a lot of the people who might be looking to read reviews for the game before making a purchase are probably in a similar boat. It's just important to recognize where they're coming from might not be where you're approaching the game from.

My amazon preorder doesn't ship until next will wtf?!

Amazon Canada

Doesn't come out until Friday in NA. Should ship to you then but maybe not arrive until next week?

I didn't watch the video but read the review and his complaints about the batteries feeling useless and making titans avoid combat, we already went through this in the beta. Some people were saying the same thing, but then you get on a team were someone is helping titans out with batteries and it really turns the match and gives pilots more ways to contribute when they don't have a titan themselves.

I found myself getting out of my titan and getting batteries as well. There was a big reward for getting them.

The problem is not about casual or hardcore perspectives, but rather how close of those impression and to the intended experience. When a game is all about movement and the reviewer never used any element of gameplay that attributed it, then they have not played the game correctly. Reviewer shouldn't be able to do fanciest kill possible. Just used the mechanic as intended is fine. Not using those mechanic and only play the game on tje very basic level as shooter is not.

Oh you lucky...

I've never got one single game early in my 28 years of gaming since NES :'(

I've tried. I've searched around but never found a Mom and Pop nor has Amazon bestowed me with an early blessing.

Looks like i'll have to settle for digital preload of TF2 lol.

None of the press knew how to play Titanfall either. I think a lot of people who got the game and dropped it quickly never figured out how to play it. Respawn said as much when they were talking about their design philosophy for R2.

If reviewers had been more competent they probably would have had a worse time due to Titanfall 2 rewarding cautious and campy playstyles (as in play it like CoD) much much more than R1.

Just finished the campaign. It's a masterpiece. Reminded me of Vanquish more than any FPS I could think of. Best campaign of its kind since Modern Warfare 2 or Halo Reach, but probably better than either.

Play it on Hard.

I see what people are saying about the Polygon gameplay to a point but he was 16-1 seven minutes into the video. Obviously the other players are terrible and that map is a lot more spread out with less buildings to use normal TF2 mechanics.

Yes it has been significantly toned down, only the red exhaust of the jet packs remain.

I'll play it on Master thank you very much.

Vanquish is... One of those games I couldn't play more than a level of.

So I have a group discussion when this game releases (have to go to Uni and come back, would take 4-5 hours inc. commute). I'm trying my best to create a godlike presentation for my group and ask them kindly if I can take the day off.

I'm also going to take my nephew's TN gaming monitor and swap out this crappy TV at least for the first few days etc.

Thanks for the impressions! Is there a Mile High Club type of achievement/trophy?

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Yup, hype reaching critical levels.
Still jumping into multiplayer first, but still.

Can't wait to play tomorrow night, definitely staying up for release. That thought is already making today hella slow.

OMG if this has Vanquish potential I am all in on the campaign.

If this game turns out to be great, then people who put weight into reviewers will know to skip over Polygon next time they review a shooter.

can someone confirms if they changed the leveling system ?? the beta had no XP and you needed to do challenges to level up which is boring, did they bring back the normal XP leveling up system ??

So tempted to pick this up instead of BF1. I expected it to get 8's at most.

On a side note: I really hope they weren't just teasing us when they talked about a VR mode a month ago. I'd love to be able to control the Titans in VR.

lol online UK video games retailers ftw.

Hmm.

Get it with GCU and $10 or wait?
I'm fairly tied up with Gears mp, but this is a different flavor. And the sp sounds interesting.

My thoughts as well. Truth is I didn't like the BF1 or TF2 demo. After I read the reviews on BF1 I just bought it though. I was going to completely pass on TF2 because COD came out a week later. Well the COD beta was complete garbage so I cancelled that and ordered TF2. My thinking is that TF2 can't possibly be worse than IW.

That's higher praise than any back-of-the-box quote.

HYPE!

TF2 for basically $38 at launch is a steal. Especially since there's nothing quite like TF2's gameplay and all future maps/modes will be free. Go for it!

You're talking some of the best movement and feel of any FPS (TF2) compared to some of the most clunky and wonky (IW).

Man that IW beta was disappointing... and i'm a huge COD fan. Was going to be picking up both and TF2 will be my shooter for the foreseeable future (along with older Destiny and Overwatch).

I think the new maps, full pilot and titan options and all game modes will really improve on the experience many had with the TF2 alpha.

I'm sure you'll end up enjoying it MUCH more than IW.
