PS4 sells through 6.2 million units worldwide during the 2016 holiday season

Uncharted 4 pulling it's weight damn.

Oh my god, we've gone full circle with that gif. Amazing.

It's mostly because PS2 and PS4 hit holiday quarters at different times in that chart though. Still while PS4 will not probably hit the hardware numbers of PS2 it will be easily the most profitable console Sony has ever released. Sony is forecasting record profits for Games division this FY.

Ohhh, for sure.

Just the rise of services like Plus and the digital storefront and DLC.

PS2 will have sold more consoles, but PS4 will make Sony way more money. WAAAAY more.

That article isn't wrong. It'll apply when the Switch releases as well, regardless of how it fares long-term. Most consoles have a strong launch.
Sure but with western media you'd see that for all consoles except you'd never see that same article for anything Xbox brand.

Were Wii threads like this? I'm as happy as anyone that consoles are doing well but the amount of celebration is a little ridiculous. I guess our team won though guys.

If nothing else I hope things continue to improve in Japan. I would hate to see them completely abandon consoles.

Famitsu numbers for Ps4 Hardware in JP:

2015: 1205k
2016: 1791k
up 48,6% YoY

Yeah PS4 hardware really hasn't been a terrible issue really. It's keeping pace with the PS3, which while that wasn't a sales monster either in Japan, it's respectable.

Software has been where things have been pretty iffy for PS4 there

Above PS2 is mighty impressive, but has it got the legs needed to really take on the king? I think 120 million when all is said and done.

YTD ps4 sold through estimates by sony

NPD talk =/ WW
ps4 was sold for as low as 150€ this year in europe and had many different great bundles
ps4 is way stronger in japan this year

Wait, wait, wait. 150€!? When? Where? Seriously, didn't see any of this where I live. Got any links or something? Was it some crazy German deal as per usual?

Not really, some series are down from their previous installments but the whole software sales are bigger than they were on ps3, because the full catalogue is much more attractive

Ah really? Cumulative software is up gen over gen there? I thought it was still under (with some games obviously up)

To be fair though I focus the least on Japan sales out of all the major markets

Pretty sure ps4 software in japan is up a lot over ps3 also even though the larger games are doing worse on ps4. Ps4 is just seeing more large titles than ps3 ever did.

japan tie ratio is always low, but i do agree
i find the hardware very impressive and don't know what the people in japan do with their console.

we still need to wait for the yearly software sales, tho

ps4 worldwide tie ratio was 7.4 early december
japan will be much lower

YES! :D https://www.mydealz.de/deals/lokal-...-slim-500gb-fur-16400-euro-nur-am-2712-921600 (some locations were even below 164€. some more expensive, tho)
but thanks to the nosediving Pound, the £149 Ps4 deal in UK was pretty much also 150€ ;)

How much has XboxOne sold so far?

I think they'll ship less than 5m for the whole October-December quarter, they said they expect a decline both in shipments and revenues compared to last year.
And here instead we're talking just about actual sell-through from November 20 to December 31.
So worldwide there's not even a contest, their problem as usual is that they're mainly selling consoles to the US and UK so if sales aren't huge in one of these markets (like they weren't in November) they don't have other markets to make up for it. Sony for example had a really great year in Japan in 2016 that definetly contributed into offsetting the lower sales in the US.

Good to hear. Japan market isn't my forte I must have just been noticing the trend of big games being down and it threw off my observations

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Not as good as the Wii at peak or total launch aligned, but still very good.

If you read the article, it's full of some pretty poor overall analysis. Selling more consoles on the first day than any other console in the West is a notable figure, and one that deserved more insightful analysis than the bizarre comparisons made to the Wii U, PS2 and Gamecube. A better piece might have focused on something meaningful like pent-up demand and marketing, not that "all consoles launch well."

Even comparing only retail SW sales PS4 is actually ahead of PS3 launches aligned in Japan. With digital that gap is even bigger. It's just that those software sales are more spread between titles than they were on PS3.

Thanks Welfare, much appreciated.

Do you think they'll meet the 20mn shipped target for FY 16/17?

No. They will miss it by 1M to 2M units. Shipped right now is probably somewhere between 55M and 55.5M and I don't see them being able to ship over 3M next quarter. I predict shipped in will be ~58M. Still more units shipped than last FY but below 20M shipped.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
Uncharted 4 at 10m soon, what a beast!

Also 3.4 million Ps4 consoles sold in December WW, damn!

It's going to be interesting to see what Dec NPD looks like, because if the US numbers are around 1.1M, you've got a situation where WW sales are 3:1 against US sales. Just shows how insanely dominate outside the US Sony is.

But will it fade in the next few years or keep pushing & pass the Wii?

I think it will unless Scorpio is cheap & force a PS5 before 2020 . Other than that 100 million is pretty much in the bag for PS4.

Ridiculous. PS4 is dominating RotW outside NA. Focusing merely on NPD performance is losing the forest for the trees.

DocSeuss, where are thee?

They are ahead in NA and the UK as well, they are winning in every territory, yeah it's close in NA and the UK, but not even that close, they are like 1.5 Million ahead in NA. Worldwide is something else, People estimating the Xbone being 29 million are crazy, that's way too high.

I think we know it isn't above the 360 at this point. They don't mention it in their PR anymore and haven't for awhile.

I guess we don't really "know" because Microsoft isn't spilling the beans.

I agree that it's pretty unlikely, but I still see it presented as evidence of the Xbox One's success. When did Microsoft last mention it?
