AMD CEO reveals next-gen Xbox could launch in 2027 — CEO says semi-custom SoC ready to 'support launch in 2027'

I guess we will see :)
I'm going off of what K KeplerL2 said about two versions for that chip.

- One for the OEM PC side of things (won't have your Xbox library).

- And the other for the console side (will have your Xbox library).

And if they allow third party stores, which all of this "predictive programming" marketing they're doing, as they usually do, will be the Trojan Horse for No Walled Gardens™ narrative.

At least how I understood it.

What I am saying is Magnus is a part of a larger strategy. Magnus only makes sense within that strategy.

Xbox: Runs Xbox Full Screen Experience, has Steam Integration but doesn't touch regular windows. So cost subsidized by no piracy. But this will probably mean it won't be easy (might not even be possible) to purchase games from those stores on the device..

This sounds like a pipe dream from a tech perspective. The software on Steam is capable of interacting directly with underlying Windows APIs or delving deeper into the Windows Kernel. Lots of software expects to be able to install launchers and the like.

Vs. the software on a console which is all digitally signed and the hardware stops anything unsigned from being executed, and only has access to the APIs exposed by the platform.

This all works on FSE because that Windows Kernel is there as are all of the Windows APIs and anything else the game wants to install on Windows and because if all else fails the customer can just drop to full blown windows if their replacement for desktop services breaks a game.

Microsoft has also been hinting for years that subsidized hardware is not part of their future.

Why yhe hell would you use 10 fucking chips for 160 bit bus? If you are committed to 10, might as well add few more dpzen mm² to the die and get benefits of 320 bit bus. L to the O to the L.

Because 15 GB would look bad/is not enough. Maybe they were planning on waiting on 4 GB chips to give them 20 GB (and/or maybe use 256-bit bus), but Magnus is forcing their hand.

They cannot let Magnus be the only console on the market that can play GTA 6 at 60 fps.

Also, by 2027, N2P will be the expensive node for TSMC. That's why both MS and Sony is using N3P to get better cost on their SoC.

N3P is going to still be expensive. N2 will be even more expensive.

Well, they might not be able to ship FSE that can leverage steam / Windows without being too wide open for jailbreaks.

The only difference the ability to enter windows proper will create is the product MSRP. Since windows = Piracy is possible = lower install base software sales. Regardless the larger strategy of swallowing Valve remains.

Which then begs the question if someone can play their old Xbox titles via BC and play games like GTA 6 day one but allows other storefronts what is this machine classified as that Xbox themselves will be making?

They are turfing, seeding. It's how this always starts.

It's no secret they have been buddy/buddy since the Apple lawsuit, in which now they want to target consoles and their "walled gardens," even after Sweeney claimed "consoles are different." But to trust him or MSFT is a fools errand to hold their words when they want zero revenue sharing for their platforms (notice how they now call Fortnite "a platform"), despite all their BS they spew into the consumer end of the business ether.
The problem is Epic never reached the Zero revenue sharing. Even now they still have to pay apple for fortnite purchases. A judge just ruled in December that even using outside links still requires Epic to pay apple something but they need to come together and figure out what they percentage is, or the court will do it for them. In the US you can't even install the Epic store only in the EU. In the EU epic used the DMA to get the W but if you look at the guidelines for the DMA Playstation doesn't even come close to meeting the requirements.

The more and more I look at the Apple case it's just clear that they wont get anything done. Especially in the US where the judges here just don't give a shit about monopolies or anything like that. In the EU is there only hope and the DMA wont apply to playstation.

I think their walled gardens talk is just more nonsense propaganda from Xbox like they always do. Just like the "Industry has changed" mantra that they got everyone to repeat. Then the "Exclusives are anti consumer" mantra they tried to get everyone to jump on board with. It's just more propaganda they put out there that never accomplishes anything.

So this is coming out this November?

Sure, it works for the small amount who still hang onto their Xbox libraries, but many have moved on long ago. Also, pricing will be the mainstream adoption issue.

This is the kind of hybrid I'm looking forward to. Not only as the next Xbox but also as a good replacement for an old gaming laptop.

Eventually regular PC Gamers will start using Xbox Full Screen Experience because lower RAM usage + Lower Background tasks.

Sounds like a pretty good thing to me. 🤷‍♂️

Thinking about it,

Sony has nowhere to run this time.

Microsoft has employed a strategy of building bigger than Sony in everything now. Sony can't possibly manage a tie like they did with PS5 (due to MSFT misconfiguring). Sony likely can't even possibly come close lol.

PS6B: 52CU, 96ROPS, 10MB L2, 640 GB/s, 160W
XSX2: 68CU, 128ROPS, 24MB L2, 768 GB/s, 275W

XSX2 will beat PS6 by 50% clean. The gap is literally 4070S vs 5080. And since it's a PC, Microsoft has much more freedom to configure 18/24/36GB VRAM Magnus SKUs that will undercut the PS6's 30GB.

If XSX2 is a PC, with the ability to use Steam + Xbox Libraries and free online. Even at 749$ vs 1199$, I would say that the PS6 is doomed.

The more interesting one is the PS6 Handheld. Half PS5 Performance but in a much more attractive form factor. Especially since it will double Switch2's performance.

They're already proxy law-suiting against Steam there (well, UK). Just slimy $3T monopoly things.

PS6 will not sell 100 million or even come close. The primary PS6 console will be the lower cost handheld at ~5xx$ with 18-24GB RAM and small NAND.

The PS6 regular will slot in where PS5 Pro is at.
Let's assume the PS6 is a collossal bomba and sells less than half of the PS5, so about 50 million.

That would still be magnitudes more than what Magnus will do.

There is going to be a gotcha in all this. Either the price will be crazy high or there will be something else. I could even see a mandatory Game Pass subscription.

Sony is banking on 4 and even 6GB modules being ready by end of 2027.

As for 3NP, Intel is already making 2nm dies. 2027 is way too late for TSMC to charge lots for 3nm.

You're reading way too much into what I said. I've been PC gaming since the 90s and have not stopped. Before that I had Commodores (64, 128 and Amiga).

Overpriced PC without all the modular benefits work better for you?

You want to "break free" then get a regular ole PC right now this very second. The circling the wagon for The Brand™ in the guise of PC Gamers Club™ is transparent and cringe.

Tbh I bought what I thought was a small PC in an Origin case that was supposed to be small but it barely fits in a large backpack(yes, I should have researched the dimensions but i already owned a normal tower that fit in my bag easily) and feels about 30 pounds. I was excited about the Steam Machine as I love my Deck but then I saw the power level. I hope the Xbox is a good bit more future proof and I plan to get the warranty. I had a lot of issues with my Origin and a Ram stick just went bad.

So yeah, I want a small pretty powerful PC/Xbox that I can transport easily. I'd be even more excited for a PS6 with Steam but that isn't happening. I keep seeing seemingly PS fanboys all are somehow also PC gamers. That's cringe too lol.

That's the only reason why Epic is announcing this publicly. Because the "next-gen Xbox" is just a PC, so of course the Epic Game Store will be on it. But Tim knows what he's doing here.
Just a PC implies arbitrary mods, emulators and cracked games.

I'm not convinced.

PCs are modular.

As I said before already, native backwards compatibility would be a real pro argument, I realize that.

If the infos so far turn out to be true we`re looking at a "premium" device with a price sticker at the very least on par with current pro consoles probably even a lot higher. You are not getting exclusives for an installation base as small as such a target audience would allow for, much less from a company that went full 3rd party with their lreleases now.

Lol, how do people still say stuff like this? Every PC can be hooked up to your TV and every PC can be adapted to fit into your living room.
Yup. You can choose your form factor and power. I did it for ten years. I have gone back to just having a PC in my office and consoles in my living room. No real reason just too many things.

I think we see it this Nov with some Xbox 25th anniversary bash but its not coming until next year

But what if...🤔

Well, until we know everything, it's difficult to make predictions and have an assessment. It's just as inappropriate to take one extreme as the other.

Personally, I've always had (and still have) a feeling that this new Xbox will be closer to a traditional console than people are starting to assume it will be.

Being able to play games from the Steam Store and Epic Store doesn't necessarily mean you can acquire/buy them from this new Xbox... It could just mean loading and recognizing them, for example cross especifics apps (Epic Tim Sweeny saying "we are talking with XBO guys").

The question is how much effort Microsoft will put into getting people to buy games from the Xbox Store rather than the Steam and Epic Stores. The ease of access to games on Steam versus the Xbox Store. Certainly, a mandatory GamesPass subscription won't be a good idea if that version doesn't include improvements and special features compared to the Steam or Epic versions...

That's why I think that more than the idea of a hybrid console itself, the importance lies in the execution of...

I don't think a mandatory sub is going to happen. Just trying to think of ways they could monetize this. I think HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 's answer is the simplest, most logical. It is going to be expensive. How expensive is the question. Not sure having the best specs is going to serve Microsoft well in that scenario, but we will see.

Never forget what Sarah said about it

Yes and no. I'm still of the belief it's a Trojan Horse for their No Walled Gardens Coalition™ with Epic that spawned in the courtrooms of the Apple lawsuit.

Scorched earth of the industry we grew up with is not cool and typical of a monopolistic loser's strategy.
Could be hardly said better than this!

Very premium. Yeah....I remember that now. So folks probably need to get their expectations in order. The new guy here claiming PS6 is doomed is smoking some weird shit if he thinks folks are going to move to a high dollar Xbox console in droves because it is more powerful and has steam. But we've been down this road before and some Xbox fans keep falling for it.....

Every time MS is coming out with a new product, go two years ahead and see influx of new posters in forums or old ones becoming active again and all high-fiving each other that start doing cartwheels cheerleading it, trying to "subtly" troll others while shouting about specs and how MS would be going rock-hard-dick out with their wallet destroying the industry in a very pro-consumer way.

Look at the kind script they follow… "Sony has nowhere to hide"… propaganda needs good screenwriters :P.

If rumors are true, Microsoft is seemingly unwilling to subsidize the hardware, launching in 2027 might be some of the most unfortunate timing of any hardware launch. Combine component prices increasing every other day along with less favorable bulk discounts based on it being an expensive device in the first place thus lowering demand, the targeted price point has probably risen 20% conservatively.

If you have both arms and legs......do you really need to?

Wife and i both game together, so yeah imma need two :)

The kids are gonna have to figure it out on their own this time though haha

I bought x4 series X for the house when they were like $500 at launch... obviously not gonna do that again.

The timing is pretty bad, no doubt.

They're already proxy law-suiting against Steam there (well, UK). Just slimy $3T monopoly things.

They already sued PS before and won 5 billion in the UK. From everything I read this is what they do. File claims and hope for a payout. I don't think they are trying to do anything more then that.

The timing is pretty bad, no doubt.
When you have a design and manufacturing plan developed over 3-4 years... Faced with unexpected situations in the global economy, the only option left is to navigate them as best as possible.
Would it be better not to launch in 2027 at $1300 and instead wait until 2028-29, releasing the same specs two years later in the hope that the situation will be better?
Or is it better to launch in 2027 at $1300, let hardcore users build a user base, Studios and devs understand the hardware and then lower the price if the situation improves?

Sony is presumably in the same predicament...

As is Steam. The timing is bad for everyone, especially consumers. No, there isn't an easy way through this for anyone. Xbox's high end specs very well might stand out in light of everything though.

6GB is not even in any roadmap right now and 4GB would mean only 20GB.
I can see 6GB mofule development getting totally fucked by RAMpocalyse, but if 10 modules was the plan from the beginning, they should have just gone 256 bit bus like PS5 and split the difference between module count and additional fie space for memory controllers. 32GB with 4GB module would have been 2X of PS5 and perfect. Now you are doing 10 goddsmned modules on mobo and probably just get us 30GB instead of 40GB. Oof.

160 bit always seemed odd to me, even with RDNA 5 requiring less bandwidth.

Just like Xbox fans are all PC and Nintendo fans now, right?

I am PC only until Intergalactic probably. Then I dust off the Pro. I do Game Pass on PC otherwise I may or may not do Xbox depending on the price, dimensions, and power. And of course PS6 in a couple of years. They will most likely remake Bloodborne to pull me to it like they did with Demon's Souls.

I'd like to remind everyone that the PS5 released in the Fall of 2020.......The height of the Coronavirus and no supplies.
