IMDb's top 250 rated games of all time

I list of overhyped games rated by people who have no history with videogames whatsoever.

There is no planet where Dispatch is a better game than Super Mario World or Halo 3.
Even though I'm a story driven campaign guy, I despise lists that centered around it cause it's just unfair to tarnish the real image of the hobby.

Ah yes, great list when both Super Metroid and Castlevania SotN are 50 (!) spots BELOW The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series.

Complete fucking joke list.

Maybe not, that is a good spread across the decades. 1980s games were mostly shit compared to stuff in the 90s.
Huh? Stuff like Mega Man 2, Contra, Castlevania III, Punch-Out!!, Dragon Quest III, Tetris, Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Final Fight and Prince of Persia haven't just aged well, they are historically far more important than many of the overrated recent games listed. They have a timeless substance that most modern hits simply can't match.

Expedition 33 is the most overhyped video game I've ever seen. It's soso in every aspect, if some think it's a good game fine, but one of the best game in HISTORY ? Better than any Final Fantasy ? Better than any Resident Evil ? Mario game ? Xenogears ? Come on now, I'm French and I'd like to be proud, I took it on day one because I wanted to praise a French game, but everything in it is average as best.

Historically important doesn't mean best game ever though. This is not a list of most influential or groundbreaking games, just what people consider the best.

1 - Red Dead Redemption II - (9.8) - (2018) - (78K votes)
With those controls and (imo) a worse story than the previous game?

You're moving the goalposts. You didn't claim the 80s were just "technically limited"; you specifically called them "mostly shit." That's a judgment on quality, not just a historical observation. Now that I've listed masterpieces like Mega Man 2 and Contra, which are mechanically tighter and more playable than many clunky, experimental 90s titles, you're trying to hide behind the "importance isn't quality" excuse to avoid admitting your initial take was off-base.

It's a weak pivot. You can't dismiss an entire decade as garbage and then, when confronted with games that are still genuinely fun 40 years later, backtrack and pretend you were only talking about "influence." If a game like Tetris or Punch-Out!! still offers a better core loop than most of what followed, it isn't just "important", it's a great game. Stop redefining your argument just because you got called out on a lazy generalization.

I never claimed the entire decade as garbage. Just that most 80s were shit compared to those in the 90s. Not all, just most. Yes, the 80s have plenty of good games that hold up, but the overwhelming majority of them are simply not. Perhaps shit was too strong of a word, but I firmly believe the 90s had a much stronger lineup of video games vs the 80s. Yes, I understand the 80s games had to come first, and the technology was limited, and that if we are talking about what was more influential than it's a whole different ballgame.

I stand by my statement that the 80s were weaker compared to the 90s and that this is a list of games people consider good, not influential, both being completely seperate opinions.

Fair enough, I see your point better now that you've clarified. 'Shit' was definitely a stretch, but even comparing the two lineups, a huge number of 80s titles still absolutely hold up today. In terms of pure gameplay and replayability, many of those classics could easily replace several of the more 'overrated' or dated entries on that IMDb list.

IMO, this list is very recent and Sony biased.

Why are so many people salty about Expedition 33? :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy: Did the first boss beat you and you ran to the slow turn-based JRPGs of ancient times missing the art, music, story and tons of additional content? Imma confidently put money on "fucking definitely" :messenger_beaming:

This is like ranking all the marvel movies in the top 20 but movies like Raiders or Back to the future are below top 50.

Bloodborne is literally the Tetris of 3D games. It cannot be 50 fucking positions below Clair Obscur.

This list is not serious.

Also, no DriveClub, which is probably the N°1 arcade racer of the 21st century.

Die Laughing Lol GIF

I fucking love Bloodborne but that shit is fucking hilariously untrue.

Overall is decent. Plenty of glaring issues like those God of War games aren't even like top 50 of all time, and SOTN and Super Metroid should be much higher.

Love that Mass Effect 2 is in the top 13 and ME1 and ME3 are like 95 and 96 lol. So sick of people spreading lies that ME1 and/or 3 are better then 2.

Mad the way once Expedition 33 got it's GOTY status people swiftly moved on and no one even gasses it anymore. Game had the most fraudulent fanbase I've ever seen.

Expedition 33 has to be the most astroturfed game in history. Whoever vibe-coded their review bot deserved a massive raise.

You will never convince me a janky "indie" RPG with active parrying (OMG SUCH A BRAVE AND UNIQUE CONCEPT) is rated above Ocarina of Time. lmao

Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger, FF7... Like come on.

I don't understand how they ranked this.

As much as I really liked Death Stranding 2, I don't see how it reached #18 with a 9.4 average score and just 2.8k votes.

Even if you don't like some of the major defining popular choices most people would choose, I'd still list them in my greatest lists because they are, even if they're not my personal picks.

FFVII
MGS
MGS3
SMB
OoT
DOOM
RE4
RE1
GTA3
Chrono Trigger

IMDB are mongs.

If the reliability about ratings of movies can be dubious in a site focused on movies (specially genres like horror)...what can I expect about ratings of videogames in the same place?

Hahahah, some people are so salty about E33. It's loved by gamers, reviewers and game awards. Something like this is not very common these days.

Who voted for Ragnarok? It's a good game but not in fucking top 10 ever...

JRPGAF seeing E33 ahead of any Japanese game

Meh, casuals gonna casual. I respect a top games list on a movie website about as much as I'd respect a top knitting patterns list from Rolling Stone.

I'm curious to know what the top 100 would be for many of those users who keep shitting on this; I bet many of them would just 'copy and paste' the common sense, picking the same old games or even creating rankings just as controversial and debatable as this one.
