I will boycott next-gen consoles if they are digital-only, what about you?

I've been all digital since Q4 2012. I traded in all my 360, PS3, and all games for Steam gift cards at GameStop. I eventually bought a PS4 and PS5, but I've never bought a single physical game for either system.

It's been just fine.

My son eventually asked me to get him a PS3 so he could check out some old games. I was able to go in and download some of my old digital games for that console like flOwer and Cuboid. Those are pushing 20 year old purchases at this point and they work fine.

If you just love collecting physical, I get it. But the FUD around digital licensing should be obvious nonsense at this point.

Once you started to have to install physical games they are basically digital games with extra steps. I just went digital and don't care anymore about discs except for my older systems of course.

Prefer digital. Less clutter and more convenient with multiple PlayStations in the house. I don't share games I buy so there is no reason to have a physical copy. I've almost completely converted my collection to digital but still have some odd games in disk.

I still think they should give people the option though as there are people who feel strongly about physical media or don't have good internet.

When I had a PS4/5 I would buy games at release complete it and then sell it to CEX or Ebay and get most of my Money back. I don't play multiple games at a time so finish games quite quickly and I don't keep/collect physical games as I rarely go back to ones I've completed. There is the odd exception.

I've moved to PC only so don't have the option anymore of trading/selling. But if PS6 releases without physical It would certainly lower any interest I have in it greatly.

I play all the games I'm not sure about purchasing through my local library and if I can't do that, I will simply not be playing as many new games. Not sure I will boycott as I like playing the new hotness but it's definitely not my preference.

My primary platform is PC and we gave up physical media years ago much to my disgust.

If I could still buy PC games on disc I would. Bring back big box PC games.

Why a PC needs to be digital???

I played games on PC CD-ROM and DVD-ROM when I was a kid...

Your point doesn't make any sense
I'd happily buy a digital-only game console if the games could be purchased as digital codes on the open market, where multiple digital storefronts competed for my money with the best possible price for the same digital game. Bonus points if they didn't make me pay for online gaming. Oh, and if the console manufacturer goes out of business some day, I'd like to still be able to play my digital games on a different competing device. And for that matter, every console should be forward-compatible so if I want to play the digital game I buy today 20 years from now, I should be able to do it on whatever the current console is with minimal hassle.

A PC doesn't need to be digital, but it's actually the ideal platform right now for pushing the actual benefits of digital ownership.

It'll be interesting to see. I think the default systems will be like the digital-only of this generation, and then if a physical media solution is even offered, you'll have to buy the drive separately.

So you are ditching a digital platform to go to a platform that ditched physical 20 years ago....

Seems logical

LOL
3 sentences and you manage to not be able to read half of it. Wow.
Also comparing digital on pc to digital on console... Talk about having no clue about the landscape.

I do agree, actually. If I'm going to be trapped in one of the digital shitholes, I am going to be trapped by GoG and Steam. They are the least shitty digital "ecosystems" (and it's fairly easy to crack shit, if the need arises).

If Helix is digital-only, I won't get it - my Series X will remain my highest-end Xbox BC device and I'm sure my 5070 Ti will be on par with Helix's GPU anyway.
If PS6 is digital-only, I will still get it because I was already planning to get the handheld anyway. I just won't sell my PS5 Pro like I did my PS4 Pro when PS5 released.

When I bought a PS5 it was a bundle from Newegg that came with a physical copy of Demon's Souls. I sold that at a "loss" ($50) and bought the digital version instead. Digital only. Physical media is for vinyl only.

I love my PS5 DE, I haven't bought a disk based game since the PS360 generation.

I also have never lost access to a game I purchased digitally so there is that.

Digital only consoles where you are relegated to a single monopolized store is a fucking nightmare.

I am glad we at least still have an open platform where even in the digital sphere there is a healthy competition and fight for customers (PC).

I don't really care to be honest.
I like physical media but I'm almost 100% digital on Ps5 because physical games in my country are always more expensive and basically never go on sale.
That said, a digital game just isn't worth $70 for me, so these days I only really buy games once they are $40 or lower, and I'll continue doing so next gen.

But if hardware price ever go back to being reasonable I want to switch to PC anyway.

There's no BC in consoles to the extent there is on PC.

PC for all its faults, it's still open and has options. If I really felt like it I could backup my games on blu ray disc but good luck on console.

We already want physical media here. Start a movement on a social platform full of the teeming masses. Oh wait, that's impossible. The teeming masses don't care.

I'm mostly all digital anyway. I would hate for them to eliminate the disc drive for backwards compatibility reasons, though.

I really hope digital-only Sony guys in here will never do anything at all to upset momma Sony or you can kiss your account and all the money you spent goodbye.

I tried that and PC people gave me a straight, "fuck you buddy", since then I got the message.

Sad face or whatever and I moved on.

I'm probably not the best person to comment as I have been digital only since the PS4 Pro.

The last physical PC game I bought was Empire Total War on release.

I already live in digital only world on PC handhelds, android, and iOS. So honestly not a big deal for me.

The only physical games I still buy is Nintendo games, because they are expensive and almost never on great discount, I can easily sell them later.

I hate the idea consoles is going full digital but I also have zero attention switching to PC gaming…it just not for me.

I'll have less interest in consoles once they completely lose physical media, because there isn't the same recourse like PC for DRM-free digital games, repacks for abandonware/delisted games, DRM-removers, etc.

Also worry how long console makers will keep the servers on for old content, when Nintendo has already cut off Wii, WiiU & 3DS digital storefronts, and not all the content has been made available for Switch...which even if it has you gotta re-purchase. Steam still sells the same games they hosted in the mid 2000s when they started.

Multiplayer games are another worry for preservation because many devs push for everything needing an online server, and the only platform where you'll get to keep enjoying them is again on PC through community means, self-hosting or emulation.

I recently sold my US Saturn Panzer Dragoon Saga 4 disc set with cpmplete packaging to a local collector for $1200.

When I sold it to him, I was very frank about what he is buying. I said:
"it was recently tested to run on a Saturn, but if I were you, I wouldn't use them to play the game. They are now 30 years old, and very brittle. If you stick them into a computer CD drive, they will shatter. Also, they are due for disc rot soon."

He bought it anyways, but outside of physical sentimental value, they are pretty much useless as gaming accessory.

All media are finite. Optical dusc media will suffer rot over time. Nand ones will also suffer data loss over time due to electron leakage. Probably the most stable data storage is magnetic platter hard drives, but dont drop them!

Data is data. Physical medium is temporary.
