Fighting Games Weekly | May 18-24 | Forget it Jake, it's Capcom Town

So the Gief I'm playing in this tournament, I already played and taught him how to beat me. Time to see if I can beat myself now

With all this hub bub about dead games, how does GAF feel about a weekly gathering where we play older games, such as whatever on fightcade or stuff like Melty, or whatever possible emulation for online matches (I didn't try to see if I can run online melee well)? Can change the game on a weekly basis.

I know in the last thread someone wanted to play some Darkstalkers 3 aka Vampire Savior, so we can pick that game first. We can set up a weekly day for it, whichever one people feel they can attend (I personally can only play online matches at night time). Even if you never played it before, I think people should try older games that are out of their element. Get edumacated yourself on different game playstyles.

on TotalBiscuit's stream today, he said he reached out to some unsponsored FGC players about the possibility of sponsoring them, and none responded to him. That's too bad. Sounded like it soured him on the whole idea.

I just remember that Joo's MvC2 dvd came out in like 2010 or so? Thereabouts. So "dead" games are still useful in other ways after the competition has gone as far as it can go.

Well last year Justin had that money match with Khaos last year in MVC2 which was a blow out as expected. A lot of hype people coming from quite the distance to support Khaos but that shit got snuffed real quick.

Here's the match for people who want to see it.

(A little late to the training mode discussion)

Yatagarasu has all the training mode options you could want.

You can save up to 10 dummy recordings, play them back at random, and they're saved when you turn the game off.

You can program the dummy to react to X with Y. For example, after blocking once, do a reversal special move or hit LP as soon as possible. You can also set the dummy to respond with a recording. For any response, you can delay the response up to 60 frames.

We need to start a movement for Nidhogg! lets get it to EVO.
All it takes is for someone to run it and provide setups, and for people to show up. Hell, even SFxT had a side tournament with about 45 people last year.

These anime games are all run because they've been run for years, for the most part. This is not new, and the players consistently show up.

To be fair, I still think the greater FGC looks at outsiders with extreme suspicion, even now -- and he's had (to my knowledge) zero interaction with fighting games before then. I wouldn't be shocked if the people getting contacted didn't even know who he was.

Yatagarasu has some pretty goddamn serious training options.

It also has the worst menu UI I have ever seen in a fighting game. x_x All it's missing is the menu sound effects from Ehrgeiz.

sounds brilliant, especially the delay. I'm very excited for this game. it feels super overdue on steam. your vids on it have been great!

It's really easy to romanticize the state of Japan's scene from afar. Great, one (awesome) arcade in Metro Tokyo has leagues/events for small games that can draw a dozen or two people. No, seriously, that's great. That's not really a trick that works in areas with lower density, like, you know, pretty much all of the US, and where semi-public spaces where you can haul in consoles and monitors and controllers are limited.

Gosh, if only there were a way people could play each other from a far...

It's not the distance, or lack of arcades that's the problem.

It's the attitude. Actively WILLING other games to die. Being ENCOURAGED to will other games to die by the community itself. Dropping games when they aren't as popular anymore. Not even TRYING new games when they come out.

It's not a good look.

I think a lot of people see the community as being zero-sum, and at times it does feel small enough where that could be the case. In that instance, someone starting to play another game is perceived as a direct threat. Whereas in Japan there's a big and dense enough playerbase that some people going off and playing Shin Koihime Musou or Chaos Code or whatnot are a non-factor to the bigger games.

Can anybody who was at Toryuken explain the DOA situation where the last few matches were to be streamed and then it got just shuffled off to the side?

I know the TOs are not receptive to DOA but maybe somebody here has a better picture?

It's self-defeating and xenophobic. Complete garbage.

Of course it's the attitude, it's simple why the fgc is smaller than it can be. Part of it is a bit of a batshit non welcoming attitude. It's why when DOA was not a Evo I was not shocked nor disappointed, I know the people behind it. Only way this will change is we get some other scene growing or some other people active that are beyond the usual suspects.

As to the TB thing, man has a bad rap, you should be shocked that somebody like him would look to sponsor some fg players. Now I can understand why some would not take him up but some outside help could be good. Somebody less tied up in the ideology of the scene.

That seems like some stuff he would actually say.

Heh, so true. Plus, I'm sure it will e easy to find a video of him talking calmly
with just enough disgust in his face to make it work.

ZeRo, who is considered the best Smash 4 player in the world said the entire United States sucks at Smash 4, called Captain Falcon players bad, and is just tired of people claiming he just plays top tiers. He fucking went in on EVERYBODY in the Smash 4 community.

He's really letting them get to him. Dude can't handle being on top.

It kind of is with the labtime requirements of modern games. Play 2k2um, 3S, and use Faust in GG? Easy. Play 13, SF4, play a high labtime character in GG? Uh, oh.

TotalBiscuit is a scumbag, I'd turn him down too

After the past number of months, you couldn't offer me enough money to be sponsored by him

Can you explain this please?

It's bad enough I have to hear his name around Hearthstone, keep him out of my fighting games please.

Can you explain this please?

He was a large proponent of GG, and not the kind we talk about in this thread,

I'm going to keep challenging this as a matter of perspective and scope. You can lab monster just as much or as little to get better results in most old games as new games. "Labtime requirements" went up because people are better now and youtube exists.

Peach infinite?
Someone's getting paid at AnimEvo this year.

For people that don't know: GO1 was considered to be the best Melty Blood player in the world for a long stretch of time (although I don't think he plays much anymore), won Aquapazza at SBO in 2011, and is extremely strong in UNIEL and DBFC, as well.

That also makes the MBCC tournament the most free thing I have ever seen in my life. D:

I had no idea he was going to Evo. Nice. Although side tourneys just got a lot more scary now.

While I agree with you in general about ppl getting better and youtube, some games DO require more labtime than others.

Tekken requires more labtime than VF. KOFXIII definitely requires more labtime than 2k2UM (no AG in that) , and it's not just the talent level of players, but the amount of hard and vital execution in each game.

TB was a questionable character even before the GG stuff, but come on, FGC members accept Triforce and VXG sponsorship, some even tried to get sponsored by porn companies. I don't think he's getting turned down(if that's actually really happened) because of his reputation.
