I found a vagina in Watch Dogs 2 and Sony suspended me (Update: Ban lifted)

I'm all about destroying taboo, but instead of thinking that every parent concerned must be an hipocrite, don't you think that parents have the right to hold accountable Sony for what they let share from a M rated game? You're dismissing the problem, but that weakens your argument imo. If people are of the appropriate age, let them watch sex or violence if they so choose. You saying that children have already had thge opportunity to have seen worse, goes against that.
Also, I generally agree with your considerations about the sex taboos, but the upskirt view on a passed out woman may not be the best chance to fight those. Just sayin'...

I only think parents are hypocrites in cases like this, when they will go apeshit over nudes but not over gory dismembered bodies. However, I do agree with you that Sony MUST be hold accountable for this. I think they could've avoided all of this shitstorm by simply adding a Not Suitable For Children filter or something like that. It's very hypocritical of them to allow a game that contains nudity, which goes against their rules and then punish one of their users for sharing it. The player is not at fault. It doesn't matter if the screenshot is of poor taste or not. It could've been a decapitated head for all I care. Point is, if that content goes against the rules and shouldn't be seen by kids according to their policies, then they should've had a goddamn filter.

My point about kids and hypocritical parents is, that most of the people in this thread are using the argument of the "oh no, poor kids! this guy is a monster!" to go AGAINST THE OP, when their kids probably do the same shit. Which is what I'm really criticising here. Other than that, yes, I agree. Parents should control what their kids watch, even if those little devils will still try to do as they please.

And yes, that screenshot is not the best one to fight sex taboos but its grotesque vibe was the perfect comparison to all of those gory violent screenshots that we all seem to accept and see as normal, that are not taboo at all.

I hope that made things clearer :p

I don't understand how they couldn't just suspend his sharing privileges for X days if it really upset them and then move on. Still get to play but can't share the moments.

You're looking for correlation where there doesn't have to be any.

What if someone higher up than the initial rep reviewed the case, and decided a week for posting a vagina wasn't enough?

Then that higher up needs to be talked by someone above him or her. One doesn't simply extend ban from 1 week to 1 month, especially after media is already looking at this. If this issue and ban extension gets legs in gaming media then Sony is in for some bad PR cycles.

Edit: In any case month for sharing in-game content is ridiculous. It's just vagina, for gods sake.

I think the best thing here is for everyone to start posting pictures of brutal murders in games to PSN with the hashtag #banmesony

That will at least get some attention paid to the situation. Sony clearly wants this to be swept under the rug.

I still really don't get what makes this such a huge deal. Wang is fine then but vaginas are a no go zone? Unless they adjust this model and leave the actual nudists untouched.

This gonna be Hot Coffee 2.0 isn't it?

No because it was in the ESRB rating.

ESRB synopsis said:
The game contains some sexual material: a man selling child pornography over the phone (no sexual acts or nudity depicted); a strip club depicting pole dancers and topless women; brief instances of male and female full-frontal nudity (e.g., a woman in body paint; a man standing with a woman outdoors).

you will get banned here if you post NSF pics in thread.... stand to reason you will get banned for posting them on PSN.

He didnt post it to PSN, he posted it to Twitter. Sony's programmers then made it incumbent upon themselves to steal his picture and post it on their service, and then Sony's moderators saw it and banned him for uploading content of a game that Sony approved to be on their platform in the first place.

It's UNREAL the level of incompetence is being displayed here on Sony's part.

I think its reasonable for Ubisoft to give this NPC some proper underwear. Having actual naked people is different from something that'll essentially only show up when the character gets killed

So did ESRB not know of this and does Ubisoft have the obglitation to tell them? What will happen in this case?

I think OP will be unbanned soon, news is too big atm.

It's not that kids won't ever see this kind of stuff, it's about how much we want them to see this. Personally, I don't think it's healthy to introduce sex and prostitutes to young children just for the sake of it. It gives them wrong impressions of how a sexual relationship works and how to treat women. We are affected by our environment. If I see sex all the time, I will think more about it than if I didn't. Why would you willingly show a kid something if it's unnecessary at that age? Making a higher barrier for porn is not just about being paranoid and overprotecting, it's about introducing these elements at the appropriate time.

"Will someone please think of the children?" It's a bit more complicated than that like I said. Also, I think you're being a little hyperbolic here by going for a very low age of 10 and saying that kids have masturbated thousands of times before that age. The average age for puberty is 11 for girls and 12 for boys and masturbating thousands of times would take many years at even if they did it twice a day.

When did I say I'd willingly introduce kids to these things? Completely missed my point. If any kid is playing a game that contains violence or prostitution then that parent is doing it wrong in the first place. All I said was, that if a kid, by mistake, sees a virtual vagina, is not the end of the world like some people are making it seem around here.

Also, please. Don't tell me you really took 'a thousands' literally. And you even did the math for the years that it would take for all of those times... Okay... I'll just... uh... leave now.

What if you streamed the game over live on playstation and are just doing your thing, murdering civilians, but suddenly a vagina appears on screen? would that be bannable?

or just a still picture?

Yes, you would instantly be susceptible to being banned. If a woman's breast, a man's penis, or a woman's vagina appears on your screen at any time during a stream on Live on Playstation you can, and, judging by the action taken to OP, will be banned.

Post about it on social media and that ban will be quadrupled.

This is BS. If you are in the EU then sue them for the monetary value of the loss of service + filing costs. Just because they have something in their TOS does not make it a valid contract and it does not mean it is enforceable in a court of law.

If Sony do not want minors seeing that content on the whats new feed they have a few options 1) Do not allow sharing in M (18) rated games, 2) Set parental controls so that shared content from M rated games is not visible on a specific PSN account, or even better on a specific user account.

I appreciate Ubisofts response but I do feel it is not warranted. This particular character was a prostitute so the idea that she would be wearing crotchless underwear or no underwear is not exactly out there. It would not even be that out there for any other random NPC in the game to be honest. If it is a clipping issue rather than an intentional decision they should patch it but if it was intentional they should leave it.

Microsoft should send this guy an Xbox One S, a month live card, and the game. They've been killing it on pr already, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't already in motion.

But the shift from one week to one month is a little silly. Hopefully the noise about the situation brings some clarity.

Assuming MS have a similar policy and open/free sharing to potentially minor accounts, they should keep their mouths shut and heads down and be glad Sony is getting the shit rather than them.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
Thread tells me OP was peacefully blowing pipes but then he took a vagina to the knee.
Coincidence? I don't think.

Probably because that level of control doesn't exist. To add that isn't as simple as it sounds.

I wouldn't expect it to be easy being a programmer myself. That being said, we program things to address issues.

This has clearly become an issue, no?

We could argue the value of making those changes, but as of now it looks like it might be worth looking into.

Ironically the fact Sony banned the user in the first place has given it media interest. Kids will read Eurogamer, Polygon and other gaming websites and they will read the story about this and they will seek it out because its what kids do. If Sony had just emailed the OP to say the content was inappropriate and it was being deleted then there would be no story and far fewer kids would have been exposed, accidentally or otherwise.

Well... then I guess it's trully #VaginasOutForOP, lol.

Or they could just look into their moderation process for much less cost and downstream impact. And give OP a free couple of years of PS+ for the trouble.

It wasn't a big deal until Sony reacted to it by banning the OP. Metro: The Last Light had a fully textured nude female model as well and it barely made a blip.

I do think there's a valid point to be made about children seeing adult-rated content via the sharing function. We all know that kids play 18+ etc rated games - and sometimes even buy them from stores that are content to break the law.

If Sony finds the sharing of adult-rated content unacceptable, then it should responsibly provide an opt-in setting for such content - whether graphic violence or sexual images, or adult themes or language.

If content is rated adult-only, then the same rules should apply regardless of the exact nature of said content.

You're looking for correlation where there doesn't have to be any.

What if someone higher up than the initial rep reviewed the case, and decided a week for posting a vagina wasn't enough?

The second note even says a moderator looked into it.

What if someone higher up saw this thread. It doesn't matter, it puts Sony in an unfavourable light either way.

W_D2 isn't AO rated.

Banning him for a month over a picture of vagina is very harsh. They should have took down the pic and issue him a warning, ban him for a week if he repeat the offense.

Thanks to this I have a feeling that Ubisoft's going to issue a patch to censor it, at least on the Ps4 version now. Thanks Sony for acting like a big nanny sheltering us from the vagina instead of amending their sharing features.

Perhaps people should get it on the PC (or xbox) if they have a choice, just in case Ubisoft (only) censor it on PS4 under Sony request.

Two very easy settings that would fix this

1. Can your posts potentially contain sensitive material yes/no

-> all shares of that user are tagged appropriately

2. Do you want to see sensitive material in your feed yes/no

There you go Sony, problem solved. No need for incompetent moderators and stupid bans

This is crazy.

You shared something that's in the game.

I really can't believe they think you shouldn't have uploaded a pic of ingame assets (of whatever nature they might be, they've been approved, knowingly or not, for running on their platform).

I think something like that didn't even occur to these moderators, they probably thought you found some way to upload garbage from the twitter share function. As in "this user uploaded porn via his PS4! This definitely isn't in our software, it must be his doing".

I don't know, but seeing how they're handling this, Sony's service doesn't strike me as particularly competent.

Chances are high that the nudity is getting patched out of every version.
