NeoGAF, welcome to .webm - the FUTURE (of burning out your CPU)

Until webm files can be embedded into safari on iOS then I will prefer GIFs.
Replace safari with pratically every mobile browser. Heck even my desktop browser (opera) doesn't have it. Webm looks nice and promising but it's not ready yet.

APNG would have never worked due to the 30+MB file size for images due to every frame effectively being an "I-frame".
I don't think APNG is really viable with current internet situations. The files are way too big to be worthwhile. I really think WebM is a better substitute, provided we end up having good hosting options.
APNG is an animated gif replacement. It already works and does a good job at it.

The fact that most of the uses of animated gifs on a forum like gaf are better served by a video format doesn't change that -- we should have both.

How do you disable autoplay on OSX with the Chrome Extension?

If you go to Chrome, Preferences - then a settings tab will open. From here go to Extensions, WebM for Neogaf - then click options. Another new tab will open and will show you the video start options amongst others.

Hope this helps.

Cool, I just enabled the Neogaf extension that enables the webm loops in chrome. I was wondering why I was just seeing links before that didn't work, ha ha.

They look pretty cool, although I don't see them as being so much better than gifs at this point. Maybe it's because there were so many on the same page which was causing slowdown. However, they did seem to load faster than gifs, and they looked cleaner.

It's technically a competent replacement but in reality isn't going to be as worthwhile because of the huge file sizes.

If you're using it for animated emoticons it's probably great, or really short moving images of some kind, but GIFs have a much wider range of applications and a huge range of those applications stress APNG in a way that makes it unrealistic to use practically.

I'm not saying it isn't capable of displaying moving images well, I just don't think it's practical for a lot of applications where one might want moving images.

Change your extension settings so that they play when you click or hover. You should be seeing them in 60fps in most case - looking ridiculously smooth. If that's not happening, then your computer probably can't handle loading them all at once.

Why are you bringing this filthy gif into the holy halls of WebM church?

rude

I've had some fun messing around with webm the past few days. I still prefer making gifs though.

At about 10x smaller file sizes I doubt that. Also on android I can view webm in MXplayer --> hardware accelerated.

Filesize doesn't say much about decoding complexity, which definitely is much, much higher for VP8, when compared to GIF. If you have a VP8 hardware decoder, you're lucky. I can't find any numbers on how common those are these days.

Cyberfox 28 is the latest version. Firefox only recently added support for VP9 in Firefox so you want to upgrade your Cyberfox.

For those that run Pale Moon, it hasn't been updated yet to support VP9.

Damn, I'm much further behind than I thought. Cheers Schrade, will update asap :)

Edit - And sorted. Thanks again!

Two more, now off Nier trailer, it's not a great choice "graphics-wise", but since we can have audio, it's nice (and I love the game, so reasons)

Decided to do it 480p - 3Mb bitrate limit - with audio

http://a.pomf.se/jkdpcx.webm
6.96MB size

http://a.pomf.se/uhjdiv.webm
2.68MB size

First one is fairly large for this size, but I guess audio is the main culprit

Dude, those are amazing! Worth installing the extension just to have some Nier webms with audio!

Strange that webm has suddenly caught on after being around for years. It's going to annoy a lot of people, myself included, since it will never be supported on iOS Safari.

Any decent plug in been released for Safari yet?

Tried Perian and although it works, it's kind of clunky. No in page display, have to be opened in a separate tab etc.

As a side note, although you can't display them inline in mobile Safari, you can install VLC and open them that way.

Better than nothing.

...and it also has a nice little playback speed control.

Haven't done any in a while, was attending other stuff, gonna try that method posted by ScepticMatt last page.

I had uploaded this but did not post, interesting thing about this one was the resolution, first I did this one at 720p and size was 8.34MB, then tried it again at 480p and it turned out 7.40MB, both have the same overall bitrate.

Might be the source video's fault though, I was trying to find some decent videos of SMT games but only had this one P4 Arena off gametrailers to work with

If they both have the same target bitrate, they will be roughly the same size. But the 480p version will have much better quality.
You can just decrease the target bitrate for 480p and you should be good to go.

I played every single video on this page, including quoted repeats and got my CPU to 85%.

Fact of the day: Did you know that 99% of Skyrim with ENB screenshots and videos showing the player's character feature a beauty pageant contestant or fashion model?
