Nintendo Paid Online Services Include Free NES/SNES Game Every Month (for that month)

I always found it funny when people said that making a powerhouse console would save Nintendo. People anyways seem to forget how mind bogglingly stupid Nintendo is when it comes to basic online functionality and general features that consumers expect in a videogame console. Horsepower is like the least of their problems.

People will pay the sub for the online. The free games won't really matter.

Also ps plus and Xbox live give more games but they are hardly ever that good. One good game from the nes/snes library will beat quantity.

Actually, with GWG it's yours forever, even if you don't resub.

PS Plus services three consoles. That's 6 games a month, many of whuch are cross buy so you mught get 4-5 games on PS4 or Vita one month alone (this month, in fact).

They've given out everything from NBA2k17 half a year after release to Rocket League on launch day.

Only for the 360 games. For Xbox One games it works like PS Plus

I mean this could turn into list wars really fast but I'll give it a crack in one word, emulation.

My only point is that we're calling it a bad proposition when I feel like it's more of a... I'll get back to you in a couple years regarding it. Like I don't really know how it's going to go. The fee could be cheaper, they could revise things, there could be enough great games to justify paying online-- these are all things I don't know, and I'm not here to act like I can predict the future.

I agree with the sentiment of the first part.

But come the fuck on, they're giving you a short demo of a game that's over 20 years old.

Man that justification. Can't wait till the monthly game is street fighter 2010 or silver surfer

If I pay the sub, I will be paying for splatoon or mario kart online. i won't care if the game is rubbish. The games on these online services are just there to give the image of value for something that should be given for free.

That's only true for 360 games, that is not true for xbox one games.

Regardless this is sounding like a really bad deal that nintendo is providing.

Nintendo is not doing themselves any favors on this though, They are pretty unproven when it comes to online and the online infrastructure they have had has been consistently terrible.

This is genuinely insulting.

Unless the service is half the price of their competitors, anyways. XBL Gold gives people one (Xbox 360) game to keep forever each month. A game that is at least a decade newer than what the Switch is going to let people play for one paltry month.

If Nintendo made a powerhouse console they'd complain about having to pay $400+ for a Nintendo system and another online monthly fee on top of the others they're already paying for. :p

I get that but I've been paying for online since 2005, paid for Sony's so I'm not really waving a shame finger at Nintendo.

And just paying for online alone is no longer worth it. It was always a bad deal but at least Sony, then Microsoft, began offering generous incentives to give it value.

The fact that Nintendo is hopping on the greed train without willing to pay the price of admission (free licenses for multiple new and recent games) is absolutely worth a waving of the shame finger.

Not be willing to says a lot about one's irrational allegiance.

Very true. And the same goes for all of us really (hell I think we're heading for a 3DS type relaunch, maybe another ambassador program type thing) but all we can do is talk about what we're being told now and it's not exactly great compared to the rest of the market. But I feel where you're coming from.

If we're comparing the value of one random 360 game to the value of one random NES/SNES game, I think it's higher value. Even if you got to keep the NES game it still wouldn't be *worth* as much to me.

You might disagree, but there's no way Nintendo are going to sell Gamecube or Wii games on the VC for the same price they sell SNES games (remembering that they sell N64 games for more). So they obviously think more recent games are more valuable.

According to some here, they are not good and a NES game (any NES game it seems) can beat them in quality.

Not really... this isn't about people picking on poor Nintendo. The fact they remove the 'free' game after the month is up when their competitors do not makes them stick out in a bad way. No one is looking for reasons to complain about Nintendo, they are just making themselves easy targets.

You are forgetting that they have given you the ability to use your own phone to use an app they developed and chat on it. Value!

They aren't going to not have you pay for online until that time comes. So you gotta judge it when you start paying for it. Revisiting it in a couple years won't change what it started with.

More and more games will be made available as time passes, which has a direct impact on whether or not an online service is worth paying for. They know this too as it's gonna be free for a while.

All I'm doing is playing wait and see.

The koolaid is strong them then. No one can deny that there are amazing games for those systems, but people really have selective memories or didn't live through the actual nes and SNES era and didn't see the trash games those systems had as well.

To be fair, I feel like Nintendo is gonna prioritize the classics such as Super Mario Bros 3 over shit like Urban Champion.

The main issue I have is I already bought and played those NES/SNES classics to death. I mean, at least let people play shit from the GameCube if you're gonna do this monthly rental garbage.

Well yeah, a lot of those games above I never bothered downloading. I see what's offered, I watch a YouTube video, usually instantly turned off by the title and that's that. There are NES games I don't like, and a lot i did not play, my parents weren't made of money and the mom and pop VCR stores didnt rent all titles.

And honestly? I don't care if the monthly game is LoZ or Super Mario Brothers. It's still a decades old game you can play (and have played) a million other places being lent to you for a month.

I don't care how much you love the game. That's not fucking value. That's not even approaching fucking value.

The service is not even close to paying itself off with a proposition like that.

Even if one quality NES game beats all the free Xbox 360 games in quality... you STILL only get it for a month. I'm ragging on people in the pair of joycon = $80 thread for trying to shit on everything, but there's people doing the opposite in this thread who are clearly trying to defend everything.

there is no way in hell that this service is fairly priced compared to what Sony and Microsoft offer, unless it's at most half the price of those services.

I hope Nintendo invest this money in bringing their online service up to snuff with what Sony and Microsoft offer, but nothing they've said about the service gives any indication that they're going to do that. no talk about servers. the stated features fall far short of anything approaching parity. the one free two decades old game for a month thing is an insult compared to what Sony and Microsoft offer.

I'm buying this system day one. But I'm not subscribing to this shit. You don't have to defend every single detail. You really don't.

Oh, hey, has anyone mentioned the amazing PS Plus discounts every month vs Nintendo's notoriously shitty sales and evergreen MSRP?

Do you think the monthly fee will be required to trade pokemon online when Pokemon Stars launches?

That's where the big buck$ stand to be made. Pokémon is a cash cow, especially building upon GO, plus Sun/Moon. Plenty of money to be extracted from players.

God damn, the people in here defending this. The delusion.

People rushed to defend MS DRM nonsense, even the press.....as sad as that is. People still pop up once in awhile saying MS should have "Stuck to their vision, was better" blah, blah, blah. Nothing surprises me anymore.

I'm talking about how the service is to play online. The monthly games aren't the focus.

Okay... Great, that's free right now.

So again, from the consumer's standpoint you're getting a monthly rental now.

If Nintendo's online functionality is still shit after all this, they're going to look awful.

I am not happy about this at all, but I am also not remotely surprised. I don't really play online on Nintendo consoles so unless they offer me a game I really want to play online... (Phantasy Star Online 2 in NA? Please thank you). I probably won't even pay for it.

One of those things where we need more details and it really depends on the implementation. Most NES games are bite-sized enough that you'd get bored with them after one month anyway, less the case for SNES but it still depends.

Also whether they give discounts for eShop or other bonuses, along with the price tag (which i imagine will depend on usage statistics when the time comes to pull the trigger).

So if the console does gangbusters out the gate, you can bet the sub will be at least what Sony/Microsoft are charging. If it really struggles, they'll just push back the date when the subscription kicks in.
