I don't know why Sony even bothers with these console exclusivity deals at this point
Sony consider Nioh a PlayStation studios game. It's an identity thing I guess.Don't really care about what Sony (or Microsoft for that matter) does with the money when they make these timed exclusive deals. Just stop paying money to keep third party games off other platforms. It's just a shitty practice.
I think its a recent deal. Which is why they are highlighting its 6 months only. If it was older, it would never be coming to other platforms. These deals could have been inked years ago. We always assume some kind of real-time reaction, when exclusivity talks happen rather early (pre-release, and two-three years in...).
I could be way off, of course, but am opent to being corrected...![]()

Ah....well, if there is more to it than I realize then that's fair. I just have a bit of a kneejerk reaction to timed exclusive deals.
Most PC gamers use Steam. Not Xbox.
30 million users are not all active, and not all are interested in the same games.
This would nit the first game to not release on xbox because the user base is much smaller.
it's hilarious when they are trying to lock other console from this game, like xbox literally giving up a fight and what other console on market right now that can run this game, feel like someone has too many money and they just throw it away
You could just release multiplatform and it would still basically be a PS5 exclusive, sales-wise.
You know, Nintendo locked From Sotware's game for NSW2 from Xbox and PS5. So, do you have the same energy for that?

Since Sony also publish on PC, why would they give a shit?
Also people forget that Ni-Oh was first announced at E3 in 2005, so the original deal probably stretches back over 20 years!
The whole point of exclusivity deals is competitiveness on platforms and ecosystems that are jockeying for dominance. PC as an ecosystem just *is*. The release of a single title is inevitably a drop in the ocean, so its not a thing that can or needs to be protected against.
i didn't buy any of nintendo console since NES, so i honestly don't know
Ok. If you check Nioh games on PSN, Sony isn't publisher for Nioh 3 anymore, just Koei. Maybe that's the reason why only Nioh 3 will be on other consoles
Sony have nothing to do now with 3rd Nioh. Koei alone is the publisher of the 3rd one now. It is obvious

Sony doesn't need to be the publisher though. They can just pay for the timed exclusivity like they've done with numerous other 3rd party games in the past.
Well, they've funded first two
Sure, but maybe for Niou 3 they told Koei Tecmo that they won't fund it, but they'll just pay for the 6 month exclusivity on PS5.

sony had nothing to do with nioh 1/2, as far as funding, production, and (main) publishing go. that's all on koei tecmoAh....well, if there is more to it than I realize then that's fair. I just have a bit of a kneejerk reaction to timed exclusive deals.
not for rise of the ronin, that was 100% a first-party co-production dealI think it's pretty obvious that Sony paid for timed exclusivity of the Nioh games and Rise of Ronin
So are you thinking Sony didn't offer to pay them?sony had nothing to do with nioh 1/2, as far as funding, production, and (main) publishing go. that's all on koei tecmo
the thing is, sony offered (probably as part of the exclusivity deal) to localize the PS4/PS5 releases (steam versions of nioh 1/2 are by koei tecmo worldwide) of both games, and that obviously includes regional publishing as well. go to the Japanese website, and the games list koei tecmo instead
worth mentioning that regional localization pick-ups is something that nintendo has done as well with the switch versions of timed exclusive third-party games (see live a live, for example, which ended up releasing on PS5 just a year later), and if sony has not done it for nioh 3, it's really nothing important to focus on
so, the point is simply enough that nioh 1/2 not releasing on more platforms by now is 100% on koei tecmo

No, I acknowledged that there was a timed exclusivity deal.So are you thinking Sony didn't offer to pay them?
Because exclusivity deals don't last forever. If the exclusivity deal runs out and Koei Tecmo sees no worth on porting the games outside of PlayStation and PC, then that's 100% on them and out of Sony's control. If Sony did pay, then how is it 100% on koei tecmo?

ChatGPT making shit up again, I suggest not using it.Asked google AI. I got this :
Yes, Sony Interactive Entertainment played a significant role in funding, marketing, and publishing Nioh (2017) and Nioh 2 (2020) outside of Japan, ensuring they remained exclusive to PlayStation consoles for years.
- Role in Development: While Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja developed the games, Sony helped fund the final production stages of the first game, which had gone through a troubled 13-year development cycle.
- Publishing and Exclusivity: Sony Interactive Entertainment published Nioh 1 and 2 in North America, Europe, and Asia. Koei Tecmo handled publishing in Japan.
- Console Exclusivity: As a result of this partnership, the games were marketed as "Only on PlayStation" and were console exclusives, which is why they did not release on Xbox.
Regarding first Nioh, i remember that it was introduced for PS3 back then.
ChatGPT making shit up again, I suggest not using it.
I'm talking about this part:Actually it isn't. Nioh was i announced for PS3 exclusively back at 2005. As it says, it came out in 2017. So, it was in development hell.
Sony helped fund the final production stages of the first game
LMAO, the first thing my man nial came out from ban was to argue with 10 people the nuances about Sony first party game. My man never fails to deliver.sony had nothing to do with nioh 1/2, as far as funding, production, and (main) publishing go. that's all on koei tecmo

It's all a matter of perspective i guess. What I've learned here on GAF is that low to mid 80 scores can mean anything from mediocrity, to disappointment, to Game Pass filler trash or even a masterpiece.
I'm talking about this part:
It was funded ( partially of course) by Sony. If you check ending credits from 12:40 and onwards, you'll see SCIE, SCIA, Sony R&D etc.. and special thanks to Sony at the end. Same can be applied to Nioh 2. Now, we will see what is the involvement of Sony in Nioh 3
No, that's all part of the localization work. You could say that they funded the localization, but that's about it.
Localization (or rather, regional publishing) is more than just translations. The 'Sony R&D' stuff you mention is network engineering work done by SIE Europe for their specific build of the game.Sony R&D is not for marketing stuff nor localization. That stuff was from SCIE/A/J

so what I said:That's part of a funding, yes. One way or another
It doesn't change the fact that it's still a production by Koei Tecmo and not Sony. Nioh 3 is the same. You could say that they funded the localization, but that's about it.
How do you know all this ?Localization (or rather, regional publishing) is more than just translations. The 'Sony R&D' stuff you mention is network engineering work done by SIE Europe for their specific build of the game.
the ability to discern information and mobygames researchHow do you know all this ?
Is that enough to make out if there was a exclusivity deal or not?the ability to discern information and mobygames research
eh...Is that enough to make out if there was a exclusivity deal or not?
Its possible only a few executives would know about it.
I don't think you understood the discussion. No, I acknowledged that there was a timed exclusivity deal.
You also said thiseh...
I don't think you understood the discussion.
Edit: or I could have possibly misunderstood you. Still, it doesn't matter if there was an exclusivity deal or not, the point is that Sony had nothing to do with the making of Nioh 1 and 2, outside of regional publishing (from licensing) and localization.
