NPD Sales Results for August 2007

For me, the constant latching onto RE4 Wii as some huge success story shows the overall weakness of Wii third party sales. It released at 29.99 and it's sold a few hundred thousand, good sales but not some overarching evidence of strengthing third party sales.

I'm not saying why the sales are weak, could be mostly shit games to this point, could be lack of interest by the userbase, but I don't see any compelling arguments that third party sales are good and I don't see a lot of evidence that third party sales will get magically better and challenge 360 in the future in the US.

Also, I'm pretty sure Tiger Woods charted in the April console top 20 as well.

And I think there have been other entries in the console top twenty as well, including Harry Potter in July. I'm just too lazy to look it up.

I agree they won't get "magically" better.

They will get better in a very natural manner if Wii continues to gain marketshare and if/when third parties put out compelling software.

Don't forget to factor in all the 3rd party XBLA titles too. After all, many of which seem to have bigger budgets than those third party Wii titles that have been announced recently.

Wow, how convenient for you- that completely fits in with your "real 3rd party games" don't/won't sell on Wii! Of course, RE4 doesn't count because it was a Gamecube game, and that means people buying RE4 are traditional Nintendo gamers so it doesn't count! Brilliant!

I dont know why people need to make such complex reasonings.

If RE4 sells X units it means that there are X people that enjoy that type of games. Capcom are surprised by the excellent sales so they will probably make similar games for Wii sooner or later

madden is sooooo much more important than RE4...

Well hardly, the console with the smallest amount of Madden sales sold 400k a month in July/August, the console with the highest amount of Madden sales isn't really setting the hardware charts alight. What does that say about how important Madden is to deciding the console wars?

Really, the fundamental issue that ruins estimation is that no third part has even BEGUN to try on the Wii. At ALL. There is no example of a great original third-party game on the Wii, much less a great original third-party game on the Wii that failed, which is the only way the "third-parties don't sell" notion should really be reinforced.

I'm sick of this third-party stuff doesn't sell bullshit. Call me when the Wii gets a high-budget game from an A-team third-party developer and doesn't sell. And in the meantime, can somebody explain how Red Steel has cracked a million units sold despite being terrible? Shouldn't that be an indicator of, if not guaranteed financial viability of third-party titles, proof that Wii owners will buy third-party games in at least some situations?

I mean, people talk about Madden and The Godfather and Boogie bombing, but in two of those situations the games sucked (Madden especially compared to its PS3/360 counterparts), and in the third situation, that game never sold anyway and it was 99% ported assets.

I totally understand your position and agree to a certain extent. I believe the lack of 3rd-party effort on Wii has to do with the long history of Nintendo consoles not selling a ton of third-party software. Chicken-and-egg problem here for sure - no doubt - do third-party games not sell because of lack of effort and quality or is their a lack of effort and quality because of low-sales expectations?

I believe third parties are wary of dumping a ton of cash into a Wii-exclusive title because of the past sales history. Hopefully, the runaway success of the Wii will lead developers to take the financial leap.

Launch games don't count, people will buy pretty much anything at launch. Everyone should be happy, Nintendo fans because the Wii is pushing the most hardware, the Microsoft fans because 3rd party sales are great month after month which ensures more great HD gaming, and Sony fans because they will get Metal Gear and Final Fantasy no matter what. Everyone wins! PS3 will also get all those HD ports that the 360 gets, it's almost like those two consoles are one platform really.

This whole thing would be over if Nintendo hadn't underpowered the Wii. They would be getting all those HD games and killing both MS and Sony in every department besides just console sales. Unfortunately they went another route.

It's asinine to compare sales figures for 3rd party on the Wii and 3rd party on the 360 now.

That means you're ignoring all the facts supporting 360 now:
* 3rd party games selling fuckloads on 360 now are of AAA quality and had fuckton marketing push.
* 3rd party games selling decent to not bad on Wii right now are B to C quality and had little marketing. The 3rd party titles on the Wii that sold huge all had large marketing budget.

Now if you were to compare 3rd party quality titles in the Wii and 360, now we're going somewhere since the quality of the current 3rd party titles don't even compare with 360's 3rd party lineup last year.

Yeah, but can that really be an effective precedent when the Wii is the first really viable home console Nintendo's had since the SNES? The market's totally different now.

That's the whole point: it'd be nice to see some AAA third party Wii titles. I'm sure they could be successful... it's just that they don't seem to be on the horizon, with the possible exceptions of Zack & Wiki and FF:CC. Western developers especially seem to be slacking off (although maybe MySims will be good; not my kind of game though).

For the record, I'd like to say that I really enjoyed the Wii version of Mercury Meltdown. I know it's just a port, but it may well be the best third party Wii title this side of RE4. If you like marble madness/monkey ball type gameplay and you're a Wii-owner, do buy it. Support good third party Wii-games today!

3rd partys would be stupid not to start developing exclusives for the wii. Remember the Gamecube? Competant 3rd party exclusives sold pretty well. Take Viewtiful Joe for example, it was a total success. But when they released the sequel, and it was no longer a GC exclusive no one with a nintendo bought it.

Soul Calibur 2 is another example. The GC sku sold the most. This wasnt simply because it had link in it, but because nintendo fans felt they were getting something exclusive for their console, an experience not present on the others.

There is still Nintendo loyalty present, show some effort and you will be rewarded. Any good 3rd party exclusive game can/will do as well as Metroid Prime.

I think we should start naming games that fit the profile of a " Real, AAA, 3rd party Title for Wii " to reach some kind of conlusion.

The first game I can think of is Capcom's Zack and Wiki. It screems "pedigree" all over the place. Previews have been phenomenal and it supposedly uses the Wiimote like no other game.

If that game does not sell well in at least 2 of 3 regions, would the claim that " 3rd party games on Wii don't sell" be finally confirmed?

I don't think so. I mean it will probably be critically raved but a kiddy style old school point and click adventure game with a horrible name and probably little marketing? I don't see how it can be expected to sell well.

I think a better test would be something like RE:UC which is going to get a lot of marketing.

It also depends if Capcom actually advertises it - which will be smart if they do so.

Of course, so far most publishers have been really stupid in not advertising the products they have for the Wii.

"AAA" doesn't simply equal good. It also implies AAA marketing and more than utterly niche appeal. I don't see Zack and Wiki pulling more than 200k in the states, regardless of how cool we might think it looks.

I don't think you can pin the claim on a single title like that. To really say anything decisive about it, we'll have to wait until there's a decent number of good third party games. I mean, if we want to be even close to statistically proper about it.

Yeah but Zack and Wiki? Tell me what the market is for a cell shaded point and click adventure game starring a rugrat and his monkey friend or whatever Wiki is. I think there are far more valid tests than Zack and Wiki.
