The more I think about the detachable screen idea it makes sense:

A 6 inch tablet would be about the same size as a closed DS. It would be the new primary and 'revolutionary' controller, which then plugs into a secondary shell to allow more traditional control, ala Wiimote and Nunchuck.
The controller and shell would be sold sperately but one of each bundled with the console, Wiimote and Nunchuck again.
An underused feature of the Wii was the ability to transfer data (Miis) from one house to another. A simple touchscreen form may make this concept further and more palatable, especially if it could act as a low level handheld while on the go.

The tablet wouldn't have to be buttonless, there could be a pair of underside buttons which double as the secondary shoulder buttons while in the shell, along with start, select and home or equivalents.

This sounds a little different from how I see it since in my view the screen would already be the shell and the motion controls would attach to it. That said I do agree about the Mii transfer.

As a Nintendo fanboy (even if a bit of a dormant one) I expect the conference to wow me. I do suspect, based on the direction Nintendo went with the 3DS, that they will be less successful appealing to the mainstream public than they were with the Wii and they will see a drop in their market size in the coming generation. Nothing like a drop to Gamecube levels, though.
