PROJECT HELIX - A premium product for a new demographic

It's obvious they've only made it because they don't have the guts to just say Xbox is dead and we're done. So they've come up with this nonsense instead which they can at least sell at a profit. And then when it fails they'll finally stop bothering at all and just be a publisher.

The idea that there's actually some viable niche for it to fill is laughable.
Exactly this hybrid bullshit is the coffin in terms of them doing consoles and hardware.

The crazy thing is they've basically announced next gen presumably about 20 months out from launch assuming Nov 2027 launch. Not sure how many prospects will hold off from buying a ps5, ps5 pro or pc in the meantime.

I think that the demographics 40-50 are more intro retro gaming (MisterFPGA, Ultimate64 etc) and creating a nice studio/man-cave with things that have meaning for them, rather than having another pc (and especially an m$ one….) into the living room. A nice slick device from Apple would sit way better there. And also Xbox already failed us repeatedly, it will be nearly impossible to regain trust, and if you look also for what Windows is becoming… they're simply alienating that category

I think hardly anyone would wait two years because something is announced. They'll just buy it when it gets released regardless of their past purchases. But if they release it before the PS6, ti could be big just like with the Xbox 360. Not saying down the line they wont get overtaken or again lose the next gen race but the 360 was proof that you reap the rewards of coming out first well in advance. Also it showed that competition having one year extra, doesn't help make a better or more powerful console, as the HW gets locked in years in advance before production starts.

This thing could release 3 years ahead of PS6 and it wouldn't even have a 5m lead. Barely anybody will buy this snd you're delusional if you think otherwise. This is nothing like the 360 days. 360 was cheap and had big exclusive games. This will have neither of those things.

There'll still be a hard core of ultra fanboys throwing their money at it, but how many people that really is, who knows. Maybe 10m total? It'll be about as relevant to PlayStation as the Steamdeck was to the Switch.

Imo it absolutely needs to have a disc drive. I hope MS realize this. The investments for everyone being there since OG Xbox is in physical copies. Digital purchases on standard games didn't get common until Xbox One, I only bought XBLA games on 360.

A workaround could be to let us register our old discs somehow to get access to digital versions. Dig out the infamous XB1 DRM and use the functionality there to register discs, we were supposed to be able to put the discs away back then. Ignore the piracy risk, it's 25yo games.

I hope you're right, but I remain skeptical of their decision making.

Yeah no doubt same here. And a disc drive will increase the cost and it'll literally only be used for Xbox BC, PC gaming is 99.9% done through digital purchases so new games won't use it.

But it still needs to be there. The whole idea with Helix is to create a bridge between two worlds, a way for old Xbox users to move over into PC gaming on Windows. Safely leave the Xbox behind.

Leaving two generations of console games behind with no way to access them is worse than on Series.

And you know this how? "trust me bro"

Also if you think that after the PS5 Pro, the PS6 will be friendlier priced are in for a rude awakening.
