The CIA should Trump this guy into office like Russia did to us. That and keep his bloodstream freshly stocked with anti-poison serum.

Putin would plant child porn on his computer if he got anywhere near seriously challenging him, then he'd have him killed. Not necessarily in that order though.

He got almost 30% for Moscow mayor election, but that was in 2013. Since then Putin's propaganda machine only got stronger. Navalny doesn't stand a chance... Putin has opposition under control. Gazprom even holds controlling shares in one of the biggest opposition radio stations. Putin realizes that he needs to keep the charade of democracy up just so he can pull some strings when needed.

The West should start playing by the same rules as Russia. Finance the opposition. Run counter-propaganda against Putin. Unfortunately, that's not gonna happen.

Putin keeps this guy around because he thinks he's "beatable." Putin recedes into the background because all this guy's "crazy antics" result in endless negative coverage. He's treated as joke candidate as Putin's election chances soar above 95% (although Nate Silver only puts Putin at 75%). Meanwhile, American intelligence agencies wage an unrelenting disinformation campaign against Putin that sweeps this dude into power!

It just would not work. It's something that Putin knows can happen so he does let opposition exist. But he controls how much voice opposition has. If he sees that anything goes the wrong way he has complete control over the information. The only reason why he has so much power over the western elections is because there's freedom of speech there. So there's no way to control Kremlin's propaganda.

I somewhat disagree with you. Kremlin-sponsored propaganda is working in the West mainly due to social media. Yes, there is freedom of speech, which helps these ideas take root (and networks like Fox News confirm the right wing's biases and the Kremlin narrative), but social media seems to be the main factor. I assume Russia has access to YouTube and social media. Though the traditional propaganda mechanisms are under Putin's hands, we could do something to start undermining the Kremlin's narratives and state-sponsored media by using social media. Like they're doing to us. Freedom of speech or otherwise. Even if they end up blocking Western social media, they'll create their own platforms, that can be infiltrated. Unless you're North Korea, the internet really makes it easier to disseminate opposing views.

Social media is heavily curated in Russia. People get imprisoned for social media posts which are considered "treasonous" and many youtube channels are blocked.

PLUS the biggest problem is that all social media curate content only to what people want to hear. So getting information that is different from your narrative is next to impossible (same as in the US)

I know it will probably never happen, but it would be amazing to get to the end of 2018 with Trump being the president of the US, while Russia elects a Democrat-like president.

Are they?

Historically, yes. They were very sincere Cold Warriors. Ronald Reagan disturbed the Soviet leadership with his really rough rhetoric in his first term, beyond "Tear down this wall!" The U.S. was also willing to covertly support the Afghan resistance to Soviet activity in Afghanistan in the 1980s, to give an example appropriate to the period.

I may be getting my vocabulary wrong and I'm not well versed between the different factions fighting in the Middle East, but how would the current government - a dictatorship - be referenced as separatists. Wouldn't that be the rebel faction?

Ukraine is not in the Middle East.

Russia is backing separatists in eastern Ukraine, and the government in Syria. Two different conflicts.

Navalny has been kept on a leash, rather than killed outright like Nemtsov, because he has several weakenesses in his brother's various shady business enterprises and his political views. Had he been untouchable propaganda-wise, he'd be already dead.

I assume this is a figurehead "opposition" just like in my country, the opposition that is allowed to exist are all buddies with the dictatorship.

If not he dead.
