Watanabe and the Space Dandy staff will also be producing a full animated music video for Yasuyuki Okamura's "Viva Namida" (which is also the Space Dandy theme song):

Original OP:

At his first Q&A session at Otakon 2013 today, Watanabe officially announced his long rumored/leaked TV series - Space Dandy. It will air in Japan starting in January 2014, and they're aggressively trying to sell the show internationally.

It is a crazy scifi comedy action series which he describes as "Mushroom Samba every week". The story is set in the far future, following Dandy - the dandiest guy in the galaxy - and his crew of alien hunters as they discover strange new worlds and look for unknown alien races.

Watanabe says they want to create an oldschool scifi adventure show with lots of new elements as well, and they want it to feel really epic. There will be a ton of variety and new aliens every week. They already have over 100 designs.

The female character feels like Jennifer from Disgaea. Somehow I just imagine the cast having Gordon, Thursday's, and Jennifer's voice, seem like theyd fit a lot (assuming, of course, it comes here, guess it would go to Sentai).

Dead

well not really...yet
Keiko Nobumoto writing again is a far bigger deal to me. And glad to see Dai Sato finally back at Bones

DAT perfect staff. Just have to confirm Yoko Kanno for the music.

Looks good, but I'm hesitant about getting excited about this. Kids on the Slope was just...forgettable in hindsight, they fudged the landing.

Staff list be damned (before someone points me to the other names included here), that was the last thing I can remember genuinely anticipating.

Many of the issues with Kids on the Slope were a result of having to adapt so much material in very few episodes. Space Dandy is an anime original so it should not run into those problems.

I'm carefully optimistic about this. Space Dandy is is a weird title tho, I want to dislike it but its kinda catchy.

I'll be completely honest this wasn't the kind of return to sci-fi I was hoping for Watanabe, but I'll take what I can get.

You would hope so. And even so, I think they did a bad job of making certain elements concise, and conversely leaving themselves with too much material to cover for the latter half of the show.

My heart can't take the disappointment :(
