Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

With my new 55" C6, the display is almost perfect aside from some vertical banding that just happens, to be right through the center of the screen. Problem is, I happen to see it on pretty much all content as it appears a few shades lighter. No other issues though...not even the usual case of most banding being noticeable during panning on specific content, my display is spot on aside from this center issue.

I've logged around 30 hrs on it and really don't want to start any panel lottery, I've done so before with some Plasma's and it was such a hassle that really done me no good. Is their cases of vertical banding easing up a bit over time with these OLEDs?

Some people have said that running manual compensation cycles has cleared banding before but YMMV. I personally don't think it does anything, but it doesn't hurt to try I suppose.

Just got my LG B6 today :) It is working out great so far, however, I cant figure out how to get the HDR Game mode to work with my PS4. I have a regular one now but I plan getting a pro later.

I installed the newest update via usb. ps4 connected directly to the tv (hdmi 4 if makes a difference) with premium hdmi cable. i have deep color and hdr set to automatic in the ps4 settings. There is no hdr game mode in my picture settings on the tv though. HDR in Horizon says unavailable.

am i missing a step somewhere? does it matter that im using a regular ps4?

Thank you, I'll give it a go when I return home, if nothing, I'll just give it time. Already passed the hassle free return period, and I've seen/dealt with far worse before.

Likely just the TV setting. Goto all settings, general, and look for Ultra HD Deep Colour, and turn it on for each HDMI port.

Did you buy yours from Adorama? Think I'm about to go ahead and pull the trigger. Struggling so hard to decide between this and 65" KS8000.

What are you potentially missing out on by grabbing a cheap 2016 model instead of waiting for the 2017 model? I just want it for movies and games.

We'll I know that specifically but is there anything specific, like a new hdmI cert. or something similar? I was pretty set on getting a 2017 model but I'm starting to wonder.

New cert is for 2018. I'm in the same camp as you and I might as well ride a 2016 for now and wait and see for HDMI 2.1.

Yes I did. Very quick turn around. No damage. My first impressions of the TV are great.

This got my ps4 to recognize HDR in horizon but I had to use the standard HDR modes. I still don't see the HDR game has a picture settings though.

To sum up; all 2017 OLEDs should have more or less identical picture quality, including B7. And in 2017 that means:
Higher peak brightness (HDR)
A redesigned ABL system
Improved SDR brightness control
More consistently high 99% DCI-P3 coverage
Improved HDR tone-mapping
Improved HDR calibration options
Slightly improved shadow detail reproduction

If you're an enthusiast, the ABL changes are welcomed for one thing. Now you can calibrate SDR content to <150 nits and not worry about ABL activating under that threshold. Finer adjustments to the brightness control (from 1 to 0.5 increments) mean better near black reproduction <10 IRE as the 2016 models had issues with that. As for better DCI-P3 coverage, it's really hard to say how much more compared to the 2016 models until we get color volume measurements and whether or not that justifies the extra expense, but it goes hand-in-hand with the reported higher peak brightness levels really (for more info). Overall though, if you can wait until a Black Friday or Christmas sale at the end of the year, the 2017 LG OLED TVs are the ones to wait for between the two, but there's no point waiting now for everybody else.

Thanks for this.

Screw it, I'm about to go ahead and get the 55" B6. You guys recommend using Citi or Discover card for price protection?

Edit: Nevermind, gonna use Citi for two extra years of warranty.

What's the best place to find a good deal on a OLED65C6P or OLED65E6P? I'm interested in the 3D tech that appears to be absent for the upcoming 2017 models. I've seen eBuyUSA mentioned in the thread, are they a reputable dealer? Any place else that's recommended?

Well after months of deliberation I finally settled on the 55" B6. 65 would've been cool, but I probably would've had to lower my mantle to avoid it touching the ceiling. Seeing as I had a 46" before my short time with the KS8000 I think I'll be happy with it.

One of us!

Adorama?

I've been watching prices like a hawk myself on the 2016 OLEDs. The Adorama deal on the 55" is VERY tempting but I don't feel like it would be that much of an upgrade from my 50" Panny plasma (2011 GT25).

It's hard to pay like a thousand dollars for 10 more inches though.

Got my LG E6 and there is one "huge" problem: The vertical FOV of 3D is shit? Did you always have to watch 3D movies on a passive 3D TV looking straight at the screen? Since I have a center speaker, I had to buy a stand that would fit over the center box for the TV. I got the perfect stand, TV on it looks great, but elevates the TV so much that 3D movies while lying on the couch is ghost town deluxe.

I may return the TV but have to think about other options first. I still have the 3D DLP projector (active 3D so seemingly FOV independent, as the picture is much higher than the TV and the 3D still works like a charm), so I could by a projector screen that goes in front of the TV when watching 3D blu-rays. I could then wait for the OLED 7 series and have the better OLED tv. I could by new/lower furniture, probably the cheapest option. I don't want to remove the center box since it is only a few months old... #firstworldproblems

Have not watched much on it for now, but the overall picture quality is just wow. Have yet to set it up properly. I hope my store has a good solution for me in ... store. If I recall correctly, I cannot simply return the TV in Austria and get the money back, but I will call today (no, Amazon did not have the TV in stock).

Just so you know, when you go from 55" to 65", you are gaining 50% more viewing area.

"10 inches more" doesn't sound a lot (except in porn), but a 65" TV is much much bigger than a 55" TV.

As a fellow Panny plasma owner OLED blows it away

My B6 should be here today, and it should be out for delivery already, but the track hasnt updated since yesterday afternoon.

I'm dying here. Feel like I'm waiting on my Switch again.

Got my B6 in from Adorama. I'm in love after tweaking the settings. Jaw dropping colors and the perfect black level is amazing. Even my not tech savvy gf was commenting on it. She had been ribbing me about dropping that much on a TV for a week but after we watched Finding Dory on it she was sold.

Uncharted 4 on this thing is glorious, and this is coming from someone with a GSync + GTX 1070 gaming PC. Every panel I buy will be an OLED from now on. Waiting for OLED GSync monitor

LG B6 from Adorama is out for delivery!

Gonna be a good day ya'll.

Edit: Did any of you make the UPS driver wait while you unboxed and hooked it up? I saw something about that in Adorama's return policies, but have no desire to hold up the UPS guy. I want to take my time unboxing and setting it all up.

I would just inspect it first if the box looks damaged. Mine was shipped via a freight line and was strapped to a wooden pallet. It looked like it hadn't even been touched when it arrived.

Was at work when mine arrived, so no. Also it took me around an hour to get everything unplugged from the old TV and to unpack and set up the new one. Would never make a delivery person sit around and wait that long. Mine arrived double boxed and the inner box was pristine

You guys make me regret not going thru with that deal. I want the Sony OLED but that Adorama LG price was so good and we'll probably have to wait a year just to get near that price for the newer sets.

This is very encouraging.

I paid the $8 through UPS My Choice for a 2 hour delivery window so that I could be home when it arrived.

I'm glad that they double box it and seem to have such a great track record. It's coming a long way from New York to southwest Florida, and I was leary to begin with, such a big purchase from an eBay retailer.

What's the image retention on the B6 like for say, displaying a desktop?

I don't think you'll have any issues unless you leave your desktop running on a single static image for like 9 hours straight but even then it'd just be temporary. They've done a great job in this department.

I've yet to see anyone report permanent burn-in with the 2016 models and from personal experience I've yet to see any retention on my E6.

My 65" B6 got delivered this morning and I'm grabbing a pal and heading home to lift it out and replace my Samsung 65" now. Can't wait!

That was made a long time ago. At $1400, the 55" B6 is definitely a solid grab. Especially if you can price match to $1200 in the next month or two.
at that time then if there were regular LEDs that were close to the OLED then are there more recent LEDs that have surpassed that particular model?

They're literally just releasing. Not sure I follow. My point was that there was at least a thousand dollar price difference at the time that video was made. The difference (with deals such as the one offered yesterday) is now much smaller. I fully anticipate ending up paying 1100-1200 for my B6 after price protection.

what i'm saying is at that time even if the OLED TV was more expensive, there were LED TVs that came close to that OLED fidelity, so at this point, are there LED TVs that have surpassed that particular OLED sku?

I think the high end Sony FALD sets are the only ones that have come close. 2017 models haven't been tested yet AFAIK.

It really depends on what aspect of picture you care the most about. There are aspects of LG OLEDs that were already surpassed by LED sets at the time they launched:

- Maximum brightness
- No automatic backlighting
- Motion smoothness
- Uniformity
- Image retention
- Near-black details

OLEDs reputation at the best picture quality mostly comes down to two areas where they are superior:
- Black levels (and the related artifacts that can be caused by LED technologies for getting lower black level)
- Viewing angles

In particular, a lot of people are super obsessed with black levels, so the fact that OLEDs have the lowest black levels is the main reason they get such acclaim. If black levels are not that important to you (either because you don't value them so highly or because you rarely use your TV in dark room settings) then the extra expense of OLED is probably not worth paying.

Personally, I have long believed that reviewers ascribe too much weight to black levels, given that a lot of people end up using their TVs in bright room settings where there differences end up being influenced more by the TVs anti-reflective coating than by the innate black-level response.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Ahh seems nice OLED sets are starting to fall into a more realistic price range for a lot of people. I can't wait for 2017 line of sets to come out and continue this trend. I may way till next year myself to buy a new OLED once the 2018 sets come out and of course push the prices of the current 2017 line down.
