SSB was SO bad online, people still try to play that???

Tatsunoko/Brawl are subject to tons of lag/delay.

Project M. People play that mod on WiFi, believe it or not. Of course, it's only via friend code exchanging (since random WiFi would just desync) but it's still being used for something significant. This really will affect that community of players now. It'll even affect the AiB ladders (AllisBrawl) hugely, which is what the site was founded on. Its main purpose will be gone until Smash 4 comes out. Truly amazing.

This is a real surprise coming from Nintendo, it really seemed like they would never cut out the servers for any of their games. Absolutely crazy that everything, even released within the last two-three years (Pokemon White, White 2, Black, Black 2 for example) are affected and closing up shop. I guess that's what happens when you release a title so late into a handheld/console's life cycle now, huh? Its online functionality is likely not to last more than 2 years. =\

Man... I know their online was pretty bad but still. Over 9 years of playing Mario Kart Ds, Metroid Prime Hunters, Diddy Kong Racing, Brawl, MKwii, etc. Since I didn't get a 360 till late 2008, I never really minded the bad insafracture since that's all I had. Very fond memories.

Now I have to buy all these old games again, just to play the online some more before it goes away forever...

When was the last time there was new content for it? Outside of movie trailers and the misadventures of link? I'm putting the singer on at least a year if not 2.

I guess they also feel there is a market for buying these (you can buy Shaun the Sheep at least).

I wonder how much of this is due to gamespy. Maybe the contract reached its expiry.

Still the only criticism I have is why can't they migrate the processes to the current set up and then switch off the old server as running costs of the server must be the main cost by now. But it may well be licensed code that they are not allowed to do that with.
Cartoon hangover, albeit also being up on YouTube, had episodes come to it.

I guess that wasn't enough of a justification. I hope Nintendo publishes some of the good stuff through another outlet.

Only games I ever played were Mario Kart DS, which is forever ruined by people snaking and Tetris DS which is awesome.

I will miss Tetris DS the most :(, oh well, anything for 3DS like it with competitive online?

But it does cost something and Nintendo is hurting right now. Gotta cut the expenses you can afford to. Guess this is one of those. I'm surprised there haven't been massive layoffs at Nintendo

Again... not really. Nintendo needs the servers, nintendo is going to be using those servers regardless. As time goes on, the traffic on older games is going to become more and more negligible. Maintaining a "legacy server" as a single instance on a primary server isn't going to really cost anything.

I call out all companies that do this because there really is no reason except for those companies to say "Want to play online? Well you better get upgrading then huh?"

Aren't there reports of Gamespy's new owner jacking prices up?

Wow, I don't know how I feel about this.

I put tons of hours into Mario Kart DS and Metroid Prime Hunters online. Also played Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, Star Fox Command, Pokemon Diamond and SoulSilver a decent bit too. Played lots of MKWii, Brawl (even though the online sucked), and Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii as well.

I think I'm going to play Mario Kart Wii online more before they shut it down.

This freaking SUCKS....

I hope it doesn't affect the Wii Call of Duty games, those are the most important online games for me (besides Monster Hunter).... There are still thousands online in those games, even in MW Reflex (2.3K yesterday)

All of the Call of Duty games are affected

Too soon. I haven't played Wii Online in years (except for Last Story) so this doesn't affect me, but I know some of my friends play Mario Kart Wii a lot online, plus all the people playing Smash too.

Wonder why are they ending the services. I think they could have left them running for a few more years considering the Wii U and 3DS backward's compatibility.

Obviously a cost cutting measure given their financials, but the question is how much money are they really saving? I mean it can't be that expensive to run servers for a lot of those games.

Ignoring the multiplayer component for a second... there are numerous games that use online services simply for a handshake to unlock content, like the Professor Layton series (connect to the internet and unlock new puzzles that are already on the cartridge). Is there a way to spoof this, or will those puzzles be gone forever on new copies of the games?

There was a tunneling project ages ago, but I don't think it ever got off the ground. http://akkit.org/dstunnel/

This...kind of sucks I mean I don't own any Nintendo product that this affects but a lot of my friends do, and many of them still play DS and Wii games online. It's one of their favorite things about the DS and Wii.

This will not help Nintendo's already shaken image with the public as a game producer...why would they do this? Just to save costs? It couldn't have been that much of an expense, and what with the warchest they have squirreled away, is the public backlash of this really worth the savings? o_O

Thank you for this.
I hadn't even popped in my copy of Picross 3D and there are like 50 weekly puzzle packs I need to download. They don't let you download them all at once, either, you have to do it one by one. I would have regretted missing these.

I might be wrong, but to me it seems more like a desperate attempt to get people to buy the new devices. "What I can't play Mario Kart Wii online anymore? Might as well get 8..."

Of course not everyone would react like that, but its just my viewpoint.

However if this is for cost saving, even thought it is probably not saving that much, I'd rather have these services in these devices be cut as opposed to them laying off people.

It seems too soon for this. Nintendo is hyping up the backwards compatibility for wii games (on wii u), yet if you buy any wii game post may you won't even be getting the fully featured version since online will be gone forever. I hate this aspect of modem day gaming.

Welp, this sucks. There's not enough room on the Picross 3D cart to save all the downloadable puzzle data! I got all the weekly ones, but now I don't have space to store the puzzle challenges. WTF

I'm going to miss the online play for The Last Story. The online component of TLS was one of the best parts of the game!

I don't condone piracy but flashcarts have a legit reason to exist.

Seeing online leaderboards going away kills a bit of interest in playing games that supported them. I'm sure the same will be happening to X360/PS3 games down the road, and I'm not looking forward to that.

Harbinger of what's to come, I guess, followed by the inevitable takedown of online stores and content access. It's one of those things you know is coming, but never really want to realize/believe it's coming.

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
This is pretty lame considering that a lot of people still play MKWii and SSBB(even though the latter is a terrible game). Online gaming on consoles sucks.

Hehe I still carry this in my travel bag to use with my 3DS for shitty hotel connections.

It's compatible with 3DS? Damn. I remember using it to play Jump Ultimate Stars back in the day and Mario Kart. I guess Nintendo is paving the way to make that big Wii-U push considering MK8 is just around the corner when they switch everything off.

Yes it is, there is an option while setting an Internet Profile in Settings

Capcom already said it would shut down MH Tri when Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate came out...
Oh well, thats that. Guess Wii speak is completely useless outside of collectors. Then again nothing changed since its inception in that regard :p

For Professor Layton the weekly puzzles can gotten with an action replay or using a save that already has them unlocked.

It is the games with user content and other uploaded things like Picross and Mario vs. DK which are a problem.

Given how the communicaiton is unecrypted hopefully someone manages to data mine the servers (for uploaded content, who know maybe this could make the EU version of Picross DS not suck*)

*-NOE never bothered to upload any puzzles. I guess we got Mario Super Picross on VC which had crossover with some of them.

~RIP Wi-Fi Connection.
A couple of these were really neat and had things not found in the regular game (one of them had you boucing on mushrooms in the middle of an ocean).

Hopefully there are savegames dumped of each scenario but I have a feeling many of them are now lost to time.

I don't have a problem with this, didn't expect them to stay up forever.

What's dumb are all the DS games that force you to connect to "download" (really, just unlock) content. Like the Professor Layton games' weekly puzzles. That really sucks for game preservation moving forward.

So what games do you need to download content before it is gone forever?

Dragon Quest IX I believe I already went back to just to download all the quests and guests.

Maybe I should give the Last Story a go with the online. I enjoyed the story mode, but never really bothered with the online.

Oh yeah, I guess Jam with the Band has 50 songs to download. Recommend me some (I think I have like 45 songs left)

Don't worry about DQ IX, everything is on the cart, so you are actually downloading the flags to activate them. I believe Prof Layton is the same way. There are AR codes to unlock the stuff if you don't get to "download" them.

in preparation of MK8? That game's gonna be definitive

wait. their talking about this shit?

After I year I had this, I busted it out on my new comp to see if it would work. Never freaking worked. They have the most convoluted software ever for it. Piece of crap.

For those interested – MrBean35000vr, the creator of the well-known CTGP Revolution mod for Mario Kart Wii (which adds hundreds of Custom tracks created by users, groups CTGP users together online automatically, adds functionnality to the original game such as being able to change character/vehicle between races or a speed meter on-screen etc.) will try to analyze wi-fi traffic and set up private servers for Mario Kart Wii.

At the moment CTGP servers are only used to update the mod itself and for some checks to prevent cheating; it STILL needs Nintendo's servers for matchmaking.

Gotta open up my The Last Story copy and try out online along with some other online Wii games just to see how there were at least once.

If Sony and Microsoft did this for PS3 and 360, people would be outraged.

Oh, they'll most likely shut down XBL & PSN from PS3/360, too (maybe not right now, but it's gonna happen). It's inevitable. You're not gaming on PC's in which online play/online servers there is just about infinite.

Pretty soon, all three last generation consoles are gonna be reduced to being just disc systems, just like with systems like Dreamcast, PS2, & Original Xbox.

No company is going to keep servers up on consoles/gaming handhelds forever.

I know that a lot of the later Call of Duty games ran their own service. They didn't use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

So it will still run?
How about games with friend codes. It's impossible to play with that too?

Black Ops is still a great game for the Wii. And I think it has its fair amount of users too. :)

This is extremely surprising. I was under the impression that it had all been migrated to the Nintendo Network and would be supported. So we won't even be able to unlock the bonus puzzles in Professor Layton games?
