Universal Windows applications running on the Xbox

More like VLC, Plex, emulators, and other multimedia apps

does VLC have a WinRT app? Because unless the program is explicitly written for that frame work it will not just magically work on xbox. I don't know of a single RT emulator.

Yes, it has it, and there are several emulators for Win8 and WinPho8 already

Well, the Xbox currently supports Mouse and Keyboard, so things like Office could possibly work.

They also announced modern touch-based Office for Windows so why not put it on Xbox One. If someone wants to use one of their 5 Office 365 devices for Xbox why not? PowerPoint presentations with Kinect.

Last year at E3 when they announced the 3 OS, this was pretty much what I seen them doing. It's not surprising neither is it a megaton since this is what MS has been trying to do when they created the Metro UI. It was a way to unify Windows so that it's accessible on all their products. Either way, good news however not blown away considering this is what I expected from day one. The question is, will this spur more into the App store? This is good news for the App store more than it is for the Xbox tbh.

A lot of us predicted this would happen, even down to requiring Kinect integration.

Goes a long way toward why Kinect is in every box. MS still trying to win dat living room.

they are other players on the windows store you know
and yes they can play mkv

$299 Xbox one with no kinect and no live paywall will save the xbox one. I bet we will get some form of a "do over" at e3!

Not yet. They have an app that is compiled for x86 CPUs with the Windows RT version to follow. ARM version will also apply to Windows Phone.

This is huge (if utterly predictable from the day they announced XBox One) news.

Cannot WAIT to get going on this. Just need ideas. And spare time.

WinRT is a computing environment...windows rt is an operating system

VLC has a winrt app and it is buggy but works

Yeah, because the Windows App Store is a treasure trove of quality applications. I'm sure Sony is freaking out, now people can play Dots on their XB1.

That's the whole point though... the aim is that you have all these devices which are easily to develop for as one. It becomes attractive for developers.

Very cool. The Xbox One certainly has the features going for it, in addition to the gaming. It's going to be an awesome system to own.

Could someone explain what kind of benefits we can expect? Does Windows 8 have any apps that could have practical use on the XBO which aren't already on it? For example I don't think Office would be of much use on the console. Help me understand what the big deal is here.

I expect the selection of XB1-compatible apps to be limited to major content providers partnered with MS. I wouldn't expect Nintendo and Sega to let emulators slip through without a fight; if anything this will ensure that the app store is more strictly monitored.

Ooh, that'd be cool.

You have your powerpoint presentation, and say "Next" and it moves to the next slide.

Or if you want to back, just "Go Back!"

Or, if you want to go to the start "Return to start"

Or just go back five slides, "Go back five."

You'll get a facebook app and a spinoff youtube app.

Don't these apps still have to go through Xbox Certification? I doubt VLC nor SnesX will go through.

So you're saying no Dreamcast emulators on the Xbox One?

Yeah, I'm sure there's going to be a "pick and choose" situation, not everything is going to make it over.

thats incredibly short sighted. It allows devs to build any app thats on windows and release it on xbox one.

Plex, hbo go, whatever a dev wants to make, itll be able to run on xbox one if it runs on windows 8. from my understanding.

That app store might not be huge now but it just got a big incentive to grow.

Title should be changed to Metro Windows applications, so people can get appropriately excited instead of OMG WINDOWS GAMES ON X1.

i dont get the point of this, who the hell would want to use apps like office on their xbox? everyone has a laptop/pc/tablet. it could lead to some nice apps being produced for x1 but nothing game changing like a lot of people in here think. but this is gaff, i remember the 'vita tv is taking over the world' reaction after its announcement, god that thread is a treasure trove

I've said this was going to happen from the start, and frankly I think it's a great way for the xbox one to differentiate itself and add value for those in the ecosystem. I look forward to seeing what developers bring

No chance in hell

I agree that it's a huge money maker for them. It may make more sense for them to have an marketplace and allow access to everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if the popular apps get paywalled though
