NPD Sales Results for March 2014 [Up4: FFX/X-2 HD]

Infamous sales would be interesting. This is presumably the best selling Infamous game by a fair margin.

XB1 and 360 sales don't really surprise me, they're in line with expectation I think. But the PS4 surge is really the surprise here - assuming the number floating around is true - was there really that much pent up demand?

It suggests PS4 still hasn't found its "normal" sales yet.

As I have said before; Titan Fall is not a system seller; shooter fans likely already bought XB1 for BF4/CoDGh. Good for its debs that it hit chart #1, but to be fair it was ahead of a game that was on sale only 10 days of the month.....

To sell systems XB1 needs legit top tier exclusives that are not already represented heavily on the system. Next they give Halo and maybe Gears... more shooters.

So some interesting stuff going on lower down. 360 Minecraft is the gift that keeps giving. And despite Nintendo investing big in the Lego brand, the latest Lego game sold better on two last gen consoles. Also, how about that Metal Gear demo? New console buyers are clearly interested.

So Titanfall was unabashedly over-hyped by the gaming press, and gamers didn't buy in to the cynicism despite it being a pretty good game.

Apparently a lot of the people that did buy into the hype, also bought into the MS vision and already had a console purchased before release.

Not surprising, but thats got to smart knowing you could have saved $100+ by waiting and not believing the BS.

I said before I had a feeling Titanfall was going to be the XB1's Haze, but thats pretty unfair to what is pretty well hailed a good, but not revolutionary game. The marketing BS, and gaming press trying to out do each other on who could push market more ridiculously sure was right up Haze' alley though.

I think we can all agree kinect is finished, Marketing isn't going to win this for MS, and they need to refocus on games and gamers. Hell, Sony already has the road mapped out for them, just go back and look at the PS3/2007-2010

And the bolded alone will make me happy. Because really it's two of their games I bought my PS4 for (Fallout and Elder Scrolls, but more so for Fallout honestly. And I'd love to see another Obsidian done Fallout to tell the truth).

And MS can have EA, I avoid their games anyways (though after Ubisoft's comments on The Crew as well as just looking at what they have done with their games I'm thinking of adding them on the avoid list as well).

I think you misunderstood my post. I'm not implying any exclusives from any of these publishers. Its just marketing/bundles/DLC. Microsoft has EA. Sony has everybody else. Both have all the games. EA's probably done with exclusives this gen and I can't imagine a big exclusive from anybody else. Sony will not "moneyhat" exclusives.

I think MS was largely in a damned-if-they-do, damned-if-they-don't situation. Specifically, the TitanFall hype.

Due to their own slow timeline for internal games getting released they needed to moneybag an exclusive and TitanFall was really the only option fitting in their timeline. They HAD to hype it up because there is literally no other exclusive "core" game coming out in these surrounding months. But at the same time they probably knew it wouldn't be a huge system seller on a Halo level.

Thus, they had to hype the shit out of it to sell units, even though they knew it probably wouldn't sell systems on a level worthy of the hype.

I personally think they should've held back one of their launch titles to release during these months. Cleaned up the graphics of DR3 then release it? Turned Crimson Dragon into a more fully featured title? I don't know, I really don't get why they banked everything for the first quarter on an new IP arena shooter. The hype train can only take you so far.

In any case I don't count MS out. They should be happy where they are with outselling the 360 by such a large degree, and true system sellers still await. They still own Halo and Gears, after all.

That being said, Sony deserves this win. I loved I:SS.

One has to assume that a lot of XB1's were sold digitally as well, so these retail hardware numbers can't be entirely accurate.
But PS4s couldn't? What is you point? Even Microsoft has stated only 5 million shipped to retailers, not consumers. I think we can draw enough information from that.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Honest question, if both new consoles are selling well and a growth market exists in this new ecosystem, what's the difference if one is selling more than the other?

A rising ride raises all ships!!

I'd rather more optimism in these threads.
Let's foster competition and focus on software which is way more important to us as consumers

Just got back from the movies guys, was wondering if anyone knew if Infamous numbers beat Titanfall Xbox One numbers minus PC sales? I'm assuming its still too early for that breakdown.

I think Titanfall was held back by being on unattractive hardware. People don't want to buy an Xbox One for anything, it's a poor system.

If it was on PS4, it would have been fucking monumental.

Not this shit again.

But.. I think it's true.. at least to an extent. You're going to deny that there was a ridiculous circle jerk among the gaming media and many who consume said media?

A post like this makes it sound like PS4 is piss-beating xbone by a four to one ratio or something..

It's not much of a surge -- it's not much more than 10% higher than February, adjusted to weekly rates. It just says Sony did a slightly better job of getting units on shelves in March, and that demand still isn't satiated to the point where supply can get ahead.

That's the one thing that bugs me Mr. Harker. Yes, MS wants to win, but it's hardly selling like a Wii U.

I can almost guarantee you there were no digital versions of PS4 hardware sold last month. :)

PC retail is not a thing in the US. Infamous did very well, but it can't beat the combined power of EA and MS marketing and most popular genre on consoles.
