Nintendo to host "Smash Bros. Invitational" at E3

Also, would it make sense to invite top smash players (mostly melee players) in the case that the game didnt allow the fast/combo heavy gameplay that those players like about smash?? So... theres hope? :p

While I dont agree with the "items would be more interesting" one should always think about the audience, they are far more important than the players, they are the target of the sponsors after all. They need to be interested to pick up the game and play too or your scene wont grow (not talking about smash, but in general)

This is a promotional event first so this is a particular case, but the focus on stream monsters to the detriment of the people actually in attendance has really become a problem in general when it comes to fighting games. This shit is backwards.

If they only invite Melee people the reaction will be completely negative, it'd just be a rather bad idea. And then NOA will think "Oh noes! let's never get involved with this 'competitive scene' thing again".

Anyway, predictions for which ones they're gonna pick? Mine:

Top 16 will be if they're pooling from multiple Smash games:
M2K
Mango
Dr. PP
Hungrybox
Isai
Superboomfan
Nairo
Ally
ADHD
ESAM
Ken
KoreanDJ
ChuDat
HugS
SFAT
Fiction or DEHF or aMSa/Armada (if they're willing to fly out people from outside the US)

Great list. I think Mew2King will be there for sure, even if the other 15 are NOA employees or game journalists.

Getting the 5 Melee gods in there would be too good.

*citation needed*
Besides do you really want someone like Nairo on stream, Brawl players should be chosen more carefully :p (Ally, Tyrant, ESAM, etc. would be good choices there)

Considering the tournament will be treated like a direct, doubt will just be NA players.

idea of going for the gamefaqs/smashboard tier list for all 15 makes no sense.
heck see how a team who only won a hand full of Ukrainian tournaments won dota2 invitational.

Ultimately, it really depends on how closely Nintendo has been watching the competitive scene in the last year and how much they know about it and its players of every game. If they've only been made aware of Melee, don't be surprised if all they pick are Melee players. If they're aware of all the games, then it would certainly be in their best interest to pick a variety of players from the three different Smash games (as per my list on the previous page).

It all hinges on their knowledge, period. If they don't know certain players exist and their accomplishments, how can they invite them? Exactly.

This reminds me of something I read recently for an upcoming MLG grassroots qualifier: WHOBO is going to have a Nintendo rep there watching and stuff. I wonder if he/she's going to scouting for players?

Let me link the post that confirms this:

Nintendo: Arron is a Nintendo rep that ive known for a long time and has been working for Nintendo for years. He will be in attendance taking pictures and giving out giveaways and answering questions. He will also be taking footage of the tournament atmosphere to show Nintendo so we can talk about future sponsorship for the new championship series so stay tuned for future announcements.

There we go

Doesn't sound like it but it's entirely possible and I know a few of the Melee guys are going to that qualifier... I think Mango is? I can't remember exactly. It's this weekend, though.

Okay, it's only a possible scenario :p "This game plays a lot like Brawl (which it does) and therefore it sucks, etc."
That's an assumption on your part.
We don't really know enough to tell.

Sure, it has Brawl's version of airdodges(for now). What else seems to play exclusively it did in Brawl?
It seems more combo-based, it seems faster, ledge mechanics are completely different the 3 previous games.

And the top Melee players would know better than to act like asshats infront of thousands of people just because something MIGHT not fall to their taste.

yep, remembered that. I won too lol. Forgot what the prize was though, a poster?

There was a super dumb trophy. I remember them handing it to my friend after he beat me out in finals. We had nunchucks, 2 minute timed matches, and characters set to random on tourney mode.

I WANT IN!!!

so it seems like a lot of people in this thread are aware of who the top smash players are why not track down their twitters to see if they got an invite

I will be disappointed if Nintendo invites people outside of those listed in the last few pages

I don't think Nintendo has done the invites yet to begin with... at least it doesn't look like it.

The only person who has done any teasing today is progducto and he teased about something he got in his e-mail. But that would be someone who would commentate and it's vague enough to be completely unrelated to the news today. We shall see, though, as he has also posted a video of Iori's maniacal laughter on his Twitter and on r/smashbros so... yeah (which he's done in the past with regards to announcements/teases like this).

are they even aware of the top players?

they should really ask the community

A couple months back D1 polled the community in the Melee It On Me podcast facebook group to get any positive articles or mentions of our scene and give them to him as it was for "someone important" and I recall him teasing it being related to Nintendo.

This was right after D1 supposedly had spoken with someone at Nintendo at some convention or Twitch event a few weeks prior to him asking the community for the stuff above (he freely posted about this on his Twitter page if I recall).

He's been doing something behind the scenes with Nintendo, I feel. So Nintendo has a direct contact to find out who to invite, easily, if all those things above are connected.

Edit: Prog is going to be on MLG's eSports Report to discuss the news with SolidJake here RIGHT NOW

It's Nintendo dude, you can't always be 100% hyped without being speculative or concerned.
They have the showfloor to showcase the party elements of the game. It sounds to me like they are gonna with with Final Destination Mode if they are inviting the pro players.
He'd flick his hair back, and proceed to wreck him.

i wouldn't mind it if some of the pro speedrunners should be invited - people like cosmowright or siglemic, 16 players is plenty to invite people who haven't placed at evo or some shit, that's enough to invite a lot of big names and also some people who the wider audience can recognize. it's fun to watch tournaments with known players in it and smash brothers suffers from having some pretty unlikeable pro players. it makes more sense than inviting players from dated games like smash 64.

Cosmo isn't quite a top player, but he's pretty good himself you know :p

the whole point here seems to be to cater to the pro scene so that Smash 4 can becoming one of the games if not the game that these pros start to play. I like the speedrun guys but I really would like to see the smash pros play this game

It is sad that the gaming press are so busy saying Nintendoom because of no Press Conference instead of seeing this Smash Invitational as a positive step by Nintendo

Seemed to be over pretty quick. I assume neither of them knew anything and nothing all that special got said, right?

Yep. They talked about what players they expect there, and about m2k dominating the last mlg quialifier.

I get what you're saying but the "Final Destination mode" isn't a mode, the FD-stages are just alternate forms within the normal mode. "For Glory" is for online, not offline.

However, I get what you're saying in that they could use the same rules from "For Glory" for the tournament and that's absolutely the max I would expect from them. The worst case scenario being 2 minutes, items on, and all stages on.

Nevertheless, I remain skeptical and slightly cynical because this *is* Nintendo.

Yea, he's not bad at all. The reason I'm into Smash competitively at all is because he gave some tutorial last year before EVO so people could better follow the matches or something. He's pretty good and he has that understanding of the game that people who've been raised off Smash have. People like that are also clearly showing they're good at learning new stuff and putting it into play. I'm assuming they'd invite these guys a week or two early so they can practice the game before the show. The final results of the tournament are probably going to reflect the players ability to learn and implement Smash 4 strategy during that week. That's an area that the speedrunners might excel. It could be a more interesting tournament if they picked players who are approaching the game from different mindsets. Otherwise we may end up with 16 Foxes.

It'd be awful if they went without inviting the top pro talent from recent years but 16 people is a lot of room to work with. In the end, it's a new game. I'm in the boat that says it'd be most interesting overall if they just picked out the most famous players and let them put on a show for us. I think it'd help build a newer pro scene, even faster.

Cosmo would be hype, even if he's not a top player!
