Xbox’s E3 to Focus on Hardcore Gamers, Some News Coming in May and More

Agreed. Great idea. Wasn't this used at the beginning of the 360 cycle? I seem to remember the Lost Planet demo being a part of that unveiling.

Yep. Think it would make a nice surprise for folks back home, demo for Sunset Overdrive or something similar.

Just because the PS4 is the leading console, doesn't mean it isn't viable to release a game exclusively on Xbox One if Microsoft are prepared to fund and/or market it considerably as a key part of their portfolio.

If you get to keep hold of your IP, then having your game funded by a platform holder willing to make riskier investments can be good - you get seeding, and if it takes off you can expand your addressable market with sequels.

If the IP remains held by the publisher, then it isn't so great to be limited like that.

Agreed, which is also why some feel Phil's trying too hard, myself included. He shows little personality whereas yosp always tweets about his little girls e.g.

Christ, it's not a popularity contest, I despair with the expectations of some people.

Phil posts informative tweets about Xbox which is great, I'm sure his kids are lovely but does anyone care???

Unless Phil Spencer is lying, or you take the tweet literally, I doubt it considering he said a month or so back that he hasn't spoken to Sakaguchi in a while.

Exactly, Thuway is a serial attention seeker desperate for attention.

It's Dualshockers after all. Every news they break is just a paraphrased tweet at this point. And most of those tweets are from "insiders".

It was surprising to discover that DS is taken seriously by so many people here. I always knew them as N4G schlock. Similar N4G-jockey sites are banned from being linked here.

I'm no fan of DS, but imo, they're the most reputable 'loose-finger' site.

And it's helpful to have a site that actually compiles all the 'insider' talk into news for cross-referencing, instead of having to dig back post history.

The funny thing? They just shared the rumors by Thuway.

I don't have anything against insiders sharing these news but I can't help but feel they do it to gain more followers. Tidux started doing it on twitter and he barely had 200 followers, now thanks to DualShockers and other small sites, he is up to 1k+. Similarly, Thuway barely had 1k followers and now he is close to 4k. DualShockers almost exclusively used to cover Thuway, even the smallest blip and vague tweets have been made news without them actually trying to verify it.

I own all 3 current gen consoles and honestly, I'm really hoping Microsoft has the best E3 conference this year. They really need to better justify my purchase of the Xbox One.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Bring over Gears of War Trilogy in one box in 1080p... I would be happy.
Also, Skyrim HD.

why I am seeing so many people asking for only old games with good visuals? Don't you guys want devs working on something new rather than wasting time on something that has already been done.

hopefully a price cut is announced. i mean i could just wait until holiday/black friday sales. hopefully a JRPG is announced though. at least 2.

They wouldn't be wasting their time if Microsoft gave it to a third party to develop though, I'd love to see a Gears Of War trilogy package on the Xbox One.

is E3 Press only still? I pretty much live in LA

Its an "industry" event. So basically its only for Press and those who work in the industry. Proving you are either requires submitting several personal paperwork items to prove it. Paystubs, W4's.. the works. If you live in LA and want to get into E3, your best bet is buying a badge off of someone for day 3. Most people burnout in 2 days.

But last year they started to check IDs against badge names in some cases, especially on day 3. Also, even if you worked in the industry, the average pass costs over $800 anyways.

I don't work in the industry but I attend for free every year. I was invited by MS 8 years ago, and that got me in the E3 system and tagged as a MS related vendor/employee. I'm one lucky son of a bitch.

First game came out 8 years ago and last gears and skyrim game came out 3 years ago. I mean seriously? I get all the nostalgia and wanting to play the game with better visuals and all. But its not even 5 years old game and people want remakes.

Halo 2 will be 10 year old by the time the remake is announced, so that is still fine.

Like Nintendo doesn't? Wii U seems to be in a worse situation than the Xbox One.

I think it could be a good way to guage interest in an old franchise without committing to a full on sequel or reboot.

The thing I keep wondering is what can they reveal? All their first part studios are pretty much accounted for so that leaves second party. Is there any big second party studio we don't know about or one that's been laying low? The only other thing are moneyhatts but with PS4 selling like 3 times as much this past quarter, I doubt third parties will be eager to jump on the Xbox train. This is where having a weak first party and ignoring it for two gets will bite them in the behind, in my opinion

Nintendo has mk8, smash, and the inevitable zelda game on top of what has already been released. I'll be spending most of my time on nintendo consoles this summer thanks to what they have planned

Basically, if people could get the movies at home the same day as they release in theaters, attendance would plummet. I think that's coming sooner rather than later.
But of course the first part of what you said is true... that's like saying that if movies were available on Netflix the day they came out on DVD, DVD sales would plummet. No clue where on earth you got the idea that movies would stop hitting the silver screen before hitting home release when the box office is posting record numbers, though.

Edit: this is off topic. Sorry for the derail.

So, since according to you 'the only reason' that cinema attendance is at record numbers is because you can't watch the movies at home, why on Earth would distributors get rid of the opportunity to make millions off the box office and millions on the home release?

Makes no sense.

While the big budget blockbusters are doing well, many smaller movies are dying at the box office. You're already seeing many of those types of movies aiming to abandon the cinema entirely. Direct-to-Video is no longer an insult. I expect horror movies will be the first ones to fully go away rom theaters.

You could have used this argument since VHS released.

And the studios did. To secure more moviegoers, they pushed back VHS releases to the point that you'd have to wait nearly a year to buy it. They also raised ticket prices to essentially get the most out of those who did go.

So that is supposed to prove to people that the console is worth buying?

The Gamecube had those franchises in addition to the RE franchise and it didn't seem that it was that successful.

It can still be advantageous even if the IP is held by publisher. Look at Pixar. Disney got Cars but Pixar was able to hold on to another IP that was more valuable- Toy Story.

Okay, that was film but the concept is the same. If a new studio can get Microsoft to fund development of an IP in exchange for exclusivity then that studio can be in a stronger position to negotiate another IP they like better.

The Gamecube sold much better than Wii U, though, so it's clear a lot of those consumers haven't made the jump to Wii U.

MIcrosoft has literally always had a second place console.

True , but you could argue that xbox was number 2 last gen for a good while (behind that wii craze) and it's only when they got complacent (kinect, lack of focus in new ips) that they started losing to sony.

That's what I mean by bringing in second place xbox, when they focus on trying to beat sony, you can argue both sides win (trying to outdo each other) , and when they are winning and get complacent (ps3 initial reveal, kinect crap) that's when they stagnate and fall.

What does a game system need to do to become successful?

I'd think for the gamer it needs to have great games. The Gamecube certainly did.

For the company it needs to be profitable. Nintendo was certainly profitable during that time.

Just because one system sells in excess of 150 million doesn't mean that systems which sell less are automatically unsuccessful.

So a mini renaissance of new IP funded by competitor from the main platform holders? I can live with that :)

would be great, a new generation is when you should try new franchises since the install base is smaller anyways.

Sony gets their credit for having a strong first party, but MS was doing lots of fun new stuff on the original xbox. They had a variety of genres and were even building a great sports studio, but latched on a few key franchises and let third parties do everything else for the 360.

I think you'll find that most wii u owners feel that nintendo has already justified their purchase.

E3 is shaping up to be quite amazing this year. Already got my Xbox One, and hopefully I'll have a PS4 to go with it soon.

I don't get it either, I'd much rather see a new game in a series in practically all cases. I can sort of stomach remakes of 10+ years old games, although I'm not too crazy about them either. It's quite pointless, really, unless it's a radical reimagining.

The thing I keep wondering is what can they reveal? All their first part studios are pretty much accounted for so that leaves second party. Is there any big second party studio we don't know about or one that's been laying low?

All of their first party studios are not accounted for, far from it. And yes, there are plenty of possible mid and large sized independent partners out there.

Not quite, Sony began closing the gap even before Kinect, then Kinect slowed the process down, but since MS and their partners failed to produce much worthwhile Kinect software, and they stopped investing in new non-Kinect retail IPs, PS3 finally caught up.
